Xbox 360 + Halo 3 > Wii in Sept. unit sales

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 at 7:11pm by Blake

Wii at AngleThe motion-sensing Wii couldn’t muster the strength to fend off Halo mania last month in total hardware sales. Here’s how the bloody bout went down…

Xbox 360 sold 527k units last month, followed by 501k Wii units, 496k DS units, 285k PSPs, 215k PS2s, and 119k PlayStation 3s above 75k Game Boy Advance units according to the NPD.

Should be interesting to see what happens this holiday… like watching a chess match of sorts.

    No surprise here.

    WoW.

It took 360’s biggest title and a price cut to just barely beat out the Wii this month.

    I said WoW.

I’m surprised that the difference is really small. The Wii held its own despite the juggernaut that is Halo 3.

I am surprised as well. I would have thought Halo 3 could have pushed more units than that. I think Nintendo did very well considering and the DS is still chugging along at a respectable rate as well. With all the gloom and doom people have been forecasting one would think that Nintendo is in a corner crying and licking its wounds like an injured animal. I think this however shows something a little different.

Not too many Wii’s are going to move until Christmas/holiday shopping season starts up. I predict many a tree to have a Wii underneath it in 2 months.

It looks like despite Halo fever, Wii still sold out. I wonder what the sales totals would have looked like if there were more Wii’s to buy.

Surprisingly big numbers for Nintendo (not that I’m complaining) but I think the 360 really deserves top spot.

The interesting question is: what will happen next month? Big price cuts for the PS3, and a couple of big titles coming out for Wii. It’s unlikely that the XBox 360 can maintain the Halo momentum… but I wouldn’t want to underestimate the system that has the best games available *right now*. (And frankly, the 360 easily has the best selection of games at the moment.)

Anyone willing to post a guess right now?

I work at a Best Buy and we have consistently been sold out of Wiis since launch. I work in the Geeksquad department and I still get about 3-4 calls a day asking if there are any Wiis in stock. So, if the store I work at is any indication then if Nintendo had more units out there they would have easily beaten the 360 and Halo 3.

I’ve said this elsewhere but I don’t see we will see big numbers until christmas and through January when wiifit hits. I know several parents who are planning on buying a wii system for there kids at christmas and getting wiifit for themselves. But trying to predict what will happen is like trying to tell the wind to blow in a certain direction so I will just sit idly by playing my Nintendo games until something unfolds.

Ok… But who made more profit?

lol I’m just joking around. That’s pretty interesting. I have a feeling that the Halo 3 hype train has already died down, though and the Wii will dominate the holiday season. Nothing Microsoft will release within the next few years will ever push it to the top like this again.

I have to agree with everybody: the only truly surprising thing is that the difference between the two numbers is so small. Other than that, I’m not at all shocked that Microsoft nabbed the top spot.

But I think Xmas 2007 will prove to be an amazing time for Nintendo. The only thing that might hurt Nintendo is that they won’t have Brawl out in time for the holidays: and if you ask me, I’d rather hurt myself and be able to premeditate the pain and know how to fix it before making the mistake than let another company hurt me and not know what the heck to do at that point.

I haven’t investigated it much, but these numbers don’t seem significantly (if at all) down from the previous month, correct me if I am wrong, but it seems the 360 just did better, without affecting Wii sales at all.

  13. AC says...

i think wii will win the holiday season. remember mario galaxy is coming.

So, Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies, yet only drove an increase in hardware sales of a couple hundred thousand? That means, pretty much every one buying Halo 3 already owned an xbox. The software numbers are great from Halo 3 of course, but the hardware numbers have to be a little disappointing for microsoft. Wii didn’t even see any major releases and still sold as much as xbox? Not to mention Wii is probably still supply constrained? WTF? If Halo can’t shift hardware, nothing can. This was Microsofts biggest hand to play and thats all it could muster. On the other hand, Wii has yet to play its biggest cards. Microsoft has to be pulling its hair out right now.

  15. jamie says...

The Wii held up pretty well against something 360 fans have been calling THE reason to get a 360 this year. If you were to add galaxy into that mix the 360 will go down and wii - waaaaaay up

  16. Paolo says...

From what I see, I’m sorry to say to any X360 owner, is gloom and doom for the MS machine.
It’s becoming more and more obvious that the puchasers of the latter are just a little portion of the whole potential buyers, like the previous owner of the Xbox and/or gamer enthusiasts.
MS failed (badly) to attract more people to this system who looks like ‘elitaire’ (pardon my Gallicism)!

Better think something fast, because even the other big franchises coming to this console won’t move much more HW, as they are the same kind of games (Games made for gamers, not for anyone).

  17. Andrew G. says...

@ Paolo: Xbox 360’s numbers are fair. And since there can’t really only be one games company (that’d basically be monopoly), I don’t think MS is really going anywhere for the time being.

  18. blockss says...

Thats what MS. sold? I think HALO 3 did what it had to do I was guessing atleast 800k units sold but still it didnt affect the Wii at all it sold out as usual, the Wii is selling without games somthing that was said to happen to the PS3 but its actually happening to the Wii instead…

When the Wii sells 300k units in a month its considered a bad and slow month and ppl start freaking out saying the Wii’s bubble will burts its a fad ..well whatever …

Now with games coming out for the Wii for 07′ like ..Zack and Wiki, Manhunt 2, Table Tennis from Rockstar, Guitar Hero III™: Legends of Rock, Battalion Wars™ 2, THE SIMPSONS, Fire Emblem®: Radiant, LEGO® Star Wars, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Super Mario Galaxy, MEDAL OF HONOR HEROES™ 2, Geometry Wars, Trauma Center™: New Blood, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 and NiGHTS™..

Just with Galaxy alone the Wii will be nowhere to be found..

  19. Dark-Magik says...

Great hardware sales for the Wii, but terrible sales for Metroid Prime 3. Only 170k for the whole month coming off of 240k in one week? Great job with the marketing Parrin. Good riddance.

  20. Jim says...

Xbox 360 sledge hammers are arriving in the next weeks and will carry the success until Christmas IMHO.

With the exception of Super Mario Galaxy Wii has nothing to offer this Christmas … *sniff* Super Mario Bros. Brawl slipped.

  21. frisby says...

I’m waiting for Sony to make a move. Everyone has written them off so far, but remember everyone wrote off the Wii at first to.

  22. InvisibleMan says...

Oh, there WILL be a move from Sony, you can count on that…

I’m a bit worried about MS, though… It’s true what everyone’s said: the surprise is not that 360 sales topped the Wii, but that it did so by so little despite its flagship title coming out and practically nothing special coming out for Wii.

  23. joshua says...

i think that halo 3 should definetely be for the Wii. the thing is some people i know cant buy xbox360 but can buy the Wii.
