It’s a holiday and a huge Wii Shop Channel Monday today, May 26th, 2008:

Dr. Mario Online Rx - WiiWare - 1,000 Wii Points
The doctor is in! Mario takes a break from his adventuring ways and once again dons his stethoscope for a new generation of germ-battling mayhem. In addition to the classic mode of using vitamins to exterminate viruses, you’ll find two battle modes and an online multiplayer mode where you can hone your skills against players from around the world. Feel like challenging a friend who doesn’t have Dr. Mario Online Rx? Then the WiiWare-exclusive Friend Battle Demo is just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe you’d like some help taking on those nasty viruses? Try out Virus Buster, where four players can simultaneously move capsules simply by pointing at them with a Wii Remote controller. Any way you look at it, Dr. Mario Online Rx is a prescription for fun that everyone can enjoy. [Published by Nintendo]

Family Table Tennis - WiiWare - 500 Wii Points
It’s time for some good old family fun, and what’s more fun than table tennis? Just like a real family, choose your character from a cast of four, which includes Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy. There are four table tennis-tastic stages where it doesn’t matter if you’re an indoors or outdoors table-tennis player. Pick your poison from a gymnasium, a forest park, a beach or even an amusement park. Choose from Single or Versus mode, or select a minigame to play. In Versus mode, you and a friend can play against each other to see who is the better table-tennis player. And if Single and Versus modes aren’t enough, select between three minigames, which include Target Table Tennis, Thrilling Table Tennis and Matching Table Tennis. The appealing cell-shaded graphics and endearing music, on top of the super-fun game play, will have you and your family playing from morning till night. Get your paddles ready. City Connection - NES - 1988 - 500 Wii Points
Based on the arcade hit, a young man born in California sets out to tour famous sites and cities around the world. As he drives the highways surrounding these locations, the road is painted white as proof of his visit. It’s the ultimate road trip. [Originally published by Jaleco]

Metal Slug - NEOGEO - 1996 - 900 Wii Points
Metal Slug is a side-scrolling military-action game. Players control Marco and Tarma, both members of the special-ops force Team Peregrine Falcon (commonly known as Team PF), and battle their way through stage after stage of intense action. The goal is to try to overthrow General Morden and win back the stolen weapon, the Metal Slug. [Originally published by SNK]

I spent a lot of time playing City Connection as a kid and Metal Slug is a definitely classic, but Dr Mario has the winning prescription for me this week. What’s your pick?

There, now everyone can shut their damn holes about Dr. Mario. It took two whole extra weeks where you had Lost Winds and Final Fantasy to keep you busy. Thank god, I wasn’t waiting for the game I am just glad this will herald the end of the whining for a while.

How does everybody know what the new additions are. Mine hasn’t updated yet. I even got up early this morning (loser?) to get my Dr. Mario on, and all I have is freaking Critter Round-Up. I thought the updates usually happened at 9 eastern, but maybe I’m wrong. Can anyone enlighten me?

    I second that, Hunter.

Hunter will never end! NEVER! Thats what the internet is for when certain people log on to it. Guess I’ll get metal slug. I want to see if the game play changed enough for Dr mario though. I may end up getting it any way just to see.

son of a bitch! I bought My Life As A King a few days ago and it left me with 900 wii points, then Dr. Mario comes out!
    Whyyyyy D:

Dr. Mario AND Metal Slug?! YES! Going to have some fun games going at my BBQ later this afternoon, that’s for damn sure.

While it’s nice to see Metal Slug 1 on Virtual Console, those of us who purchased Metal Slug Anthology in North America are still being left out in the cold concerning Classic Controller support, while Japan’s version did get a fix for it. Leave out the comments concerning GameCube controller support, as I have none (donations welcome). If you haven’t bought Anthology yet, then go the Virtual Console route. The Metal Slug series is indeed one of the best arcade games of all-time.

As for Dr. Mario Online Rx, if you are an old-school gamer like myself, then I don’t have to even hint at buying it. You’re probably already playing it, and I’ll likely be dominated by you here soon. If you haven’t ever had the pleasure of playing it, it’s $10 people. Look in the bargain bins at your retailers and you’ll possibly not find any game as fun as this one. The online play is a long-time dream to finally experience. Though, a 4-player mode would have been insane.

Wasn’t ever a fan of City Connection, and I will wait on some in-depth review for Family Table Tennis. Sorry, I’m not spending $5 on a game that looks neat for multiplayer (see GameTrailers for a video) that could otherwise be dismal.

Has anybody ran out of wii space yet?
I do not like to complaint (I even understand why to keep the wii codes) but even so ……..
    c’mon…….

    @ Hunter and others -
Nintendo announces the new releases via their press site and email each Monday.

  10. Gregory Weagle says...

I still have at least 1000 blocks left.

  11. Joltman says...

VD/WiiWare is not updated until 9am PST (that’s Redmond, WA time).

  12. Soup says...

most importantly, does Family Table Tennis support different grip styles? I am more than halfway decent at tennis, but only when i can grip the paddle like a knife rather than a tennis racquet!

  13. Soup says...

er, TABLE tennis. I am all-around weaksauce at regular tennis

  14. Atlantis1982 says...

Table Tennis is going to be purchase, sooner or later. Right now; I have other games to play.

  15. Awol says...

Is the online gonna work as bad as brawl? I STILL haven’t been able to play anyone.
