Wii menu update 3.3

Monday, June 16th, 2008 at 11:05pm by Jake

wiiglow.jpgBe sure to check for a blue glow, because it’s update time. Nintendo released Wii menu update 3.3 this evening for the US. Compared to previous updates, version 3.3 looks to fix internal bugs and issues.

Wii Menu 3.3

“With this update, you can now move a Mii from the Mii plaza to the Mii parade in the Mii Channel. To do this, simply pick up a Mii using the A and B buttons and then release it over the Mii Parade icon in the upper right corner of the screen.”

“Because unauthorized modifications to save files may impair game play or the Wii Console, updating to Wii Menu version 3.3 will also check for and automatically remove such save files.”

Does this cancel out recent homebrew breakthroughs? Update your Wii and give us a report.

    OH. MY. GOD.

It stops Twilight Hack, but I’m not stupid enough to update my system at this junction in time. I will wait until there is an announcement from the homebrew scene concerning this.

I’ll probably update but only because I haven’t gone to the trouble of running said modifications on my Wii. I don’t doubt there’ll be other ways found to do what has been done with the TP exploit but it might not be as easy as simply using an SD card. :/

there was also a Nintendo channel update where you can see player recommendations on certain items.

Will this kill my Homebrew Channel? Or just get rid of the Twilight Hack?

  6. peshue says...

I read on another blog comment that the homebrew channel still works, I can’t claim that its true though.

  7. RoyalRook says...

Just don’t update anything for now, what’s the hurry?

I’d keep an eye on this post by Bushing.

The update is specifically designed to block the TP hack — but it looks like Nintendo botched it and a workaround has already been discovered.

But still, if you’re even vaguely interested in homebrew (such as a media player): DON’T UPDATE YET.

is there anyway to undo the update?!
    DAMNIT

  10. Red Mozzie says...

Not at the moment, although work is being done on a system downgrader.

Greedy. They’re getting greedy. Even Sony, the greediest of the bunch, gave up on this kind of crap.

And the “recommendations” are a joke. You can’t “rate” a game - as if people don’t go to their favorite fan site to check out the user ratings of a game. It allows people to define what age group would enjoy it the most, whether hardcore or casual gamers would like it, etc - but not if the game is any good. They had a chance to stand out here and they passed.

By the way, does anyone know if there is anyone posting the changes to the DS demos on the Nintendo Channel?

I tried the twilight hack a while ago but deleted it soon after so there’s nothing to worry about for me.. Still, I think I will hold back from the update for now until they force me to do it. no use using my internet capacity to download an update whose sole purpose is to get rid of the twilight hack.. they could have at least added something enticing to the table along with the hack removal to make people more interested in it. A working media player for decent resolution videos would be nice thanks Nintendo
Like Fool Throttle said. Sony gave up trying to block these simply because it’s impossible to do so. Some people want to play homebrew, they will always find a way to do it. They will just have to live with the fact that there are some jerks out there who would use this kind of thing to steal and play games.

I don’t use homebrew, so this isn’t a big issue. But even so, it takes Nintendo a long time to respond to this sort of thing. I expected an update like this a long time ago.

This sucks. n00bs are gonna spam Mii Parade, and freakin’ have more than me. gay

  15. Craig says...

Yea I’m surprised it took Nintendo so long to release the update. I’m not interested in homebrew on my Wii so I installed the update when I woke up this morning.

Here’s hoping they keep updating the Wii giving us new features. Flash 9 on the Internet Channel would be a nice addition :).

Word from developers at WiiBrew, the home of Nintendo Wii homebrew, is that while the Wii Menu update does successfully remove the altered The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess game save from the Wii’s primary NAND Flash storage, it has not affected Team Twiizer’s Homebrew Channel in any way.

In fact, we hear from several sources that all homebrew applications are apparently left untouched. Even some applications that write to the SD cards are not affected by the Wii Menu’s new security procedures.

The update is true enough, however: several users have noted that the Wii Menu does delete the Twilight Hack save game, and even prevents the duplication of altered game saves of Twilight Princess to the Wii’s storage.

As far as the homebrew developers are concerned, the Wii Menu update is not critical to the homebrew community’s efforts. It is for the most part circumvented by the existence of the Homebrew Channel on your Wii, which is capable of launching homebrew software on its own without the help of the Twilight Hack.

We intend to update you as soon as we get more word on the issue.
