Wii firmware update now available

Woke up to my Wii slot flashing this morning. A message on my Wii message board said that an update is available. The note from Nintendo said that the update contained an update to the Forecast Channel display on the main Wii Menu that would show the weather in my area. Also, the Wii Shop Channel now has a search function!
After updating my Wii from firmware version 2.2U to 3.0U, I noticed the Forecast Channel icon had changed. They’ve also added a clock to the main lower center of the Wii Menu, just above the date. I’m curious to see if there are any other new features added that they didn’t mention in the message.
[Update: GoNintendo, NeoGAF, and other sites have more details about the update.]
Is your slot flashing today?

Last night I tried to download Wave Race 64…but alas could not due to the updating of the Wii Shop Channel. This morning I woke up and tried it again and was told about the update.
I did not get the message from Nintendo though and no blue slot. I will probably get that later, but since I was eager to get into the shop channel I forced the Wii to update.
I did notice the clock, but not the Forecast Icon, I will have to check it when I get home from work.

Open up the News Channel, too. It will then show a headline or two on the main Wii Channel icon for News.
I think it’s a nice touch to add that clock, but it’s rather ugly compared to the rest of the interface.
Overall, I don’t know if this really qualifies as a full version release number. Why not just 2.3U instead of 3.0U? Could it have something to do with that “September” tidbit coming from Reggie?

It’s just some cosmetic changes. Nothing too big.

Well if anything, notice that on the shop channel there is a slider bar on the part to search for games from different consoles..there’ll definitely be more games on other consoles coming!

Bah no flashing this morning, abit disappointed as we have two Wii’s in the living room (don’t ask) and i was hoping for syncronised flashing!

I got version 3.0E.
And this was the September suprise, if you ask me.

Nice, changes the icon on the weather channel. I go into the weather channel. It gives my “current” conditions. Still 18 hours old. Why don’t they fix that?

My internet is not fast enough to handle firmware updates, as well as anything else from the Wii, So, I’ll have to wait and install the update from some new software.

Damn! My internet connection has been down in the past few days!
Now I’m going to have to fix that…

Fank: How can you consider this September surprise if it’s still early August?

went down the basement to work out this morning and sure enough, it was glowing at me. Why does that make me excited? Anyway, great update, lots of nice features/enhancements.

I think there’s got to be something more “under the hood” for them to call it 3.0. I’m with the people saying that this is prep for the September Surprise, which I’m saying is the first WiiWare game and will be something big and well known from the P.C. world. That’s my official guess.

Oh, August surprise then! Or was it a september surprise?
I’m confused..

I didn’t get a message on my Wii about it. Luckily, I read the news about it this morning and did a manual Wii firmware update. Disappointed that I didn’t get any blue-light goodness from Nintendo about it, though. Maybe later this afternoon?

USB keyboard support FTW! Try it, it works in the wii-shop channel and message boards now!

I’m hoping the September surprise involves either voice chat or a MMO game… The keyboard support and new option in parental controls is making me even more excited to find out if these possibilities come true.

One noted change: when you receive a message board message from someone else, the icon flashes and has a sound effect now.

I don’t like that the ‘disc-swapping’ doesn’t work anymore for the import games. I have a large catalog of Japanese games (I live in Japan), and an American Wii. I still don’t understand the whole, ‘Region-specific’ consoles. Why didn’t they just keep it like the DS/DS Lite, GBA, etc…
It’s a good thing I still held onto my Panasonic Q.
