Typical Wii owner has 2.2 Wiimotes

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 at 2:49pm by Jack

Wiimotes…and about 1,000 AA batteries. Yuk yuk.

More seriously, Next Generation has a handy pie chart up today showing how said owners have purchased their Wiimotes. This is good information to have — especially if you’re a developer, a-hem — because it gives you a window into what your average owner’s Wii set up looks like. Hence, what kinds of games might sell better than others.

Next Gen:

Over 21% of the Wii remotes in the market come from sales of Wii Play, while 34% come from the sales of the Wii remote as an accessory. On average, 3 out of 4 Wii owners have purchased an extra controller that wasn’t packaged with a game. Moreover, nearly 1 in 2 Wii owners have purchased a copy of Wii Play, which makes it highly likely that the median number of Wii remotes per console is right at 2. Simply put, most Wii owners would appear equipped to play multiplayer games, a fact that may guide publishers as they design new software for the system.

On a related note, if they weren’t so expensive (and controllers in general are expensive these days, motion sensing or not), I would have said Nintendo should have included two Wiimotes with Wii Sports in their “all inclusive” system. However, this would have driven up the buy in cost and the entire point of the system would have been muddied. Such is life.

Does this mean more party games are incoming? The haters would say yes, but please remember that the original NES came with two controllers, as did the SNES; and “party games” and “mini games” were no more prevalent on those systems because of that fact. Instead, I’d like to see a resurgence of the days when 2-player co-op (or more!) was a little more popular than it is today (Halo 3, for example)

How many you guys got? I have two, and I bought them both back in November.

I hate to say it Jack, but…

I agree. I love co-op modes, and online co-op is even better.

I have 4 remotes and 3 nunchucks. I’ve only ever used all 3 chucks once, but I’ve used the 4 remotes probably 10 times or so.

The most fun I’ve ever had with Wii was an 8 player game of Warioware, and that only used one remote.

4 remotes (one partially damaged). 2 nunchucks.

  5. dlindema says...

4 ‘motes, 4 ‘chuks, and a Classic. I threw about a dozen ‘Wii parties’ last year, and four remotes came in handy.

good point about the batteries, I feel like I need fresh set of batteries every 5 to 8 hours? is this normal?

  7. DrewMG says...

I have about 20 rechargeable energizers that rotate between my wii remotes, my wireless PS2 controller, my Wavebird, and my 2 Xbox 360 controllers.

I have two Wiimotes with nunchuks, and I use my Wavebird for most of my VC downloads (although I’ve only got like 3 or 4 games downloaded). Technically, the Wiimote should get around 20 hours of constant uninterrupted power out of 2 AAs. Some games, though, drain the poor things faster than others (Metroid is eating mine alive!), especially if they have heavy usage of force feed-back and audio, and the chuck. If you’re concerned about battery life, turning off rumble in game will help your batteries last about 40% longer. That Nyko charger actually is a nice deal, though. I personally wish they’d just make the Wiimotes with built-in Li-Cads like the SP and DS have.

Also, one slight gripe, Infendo. You anger me with the image of multi-colored Wiimotes. I wanted a black Wii so badly…..and all we get is I-Pod white……I hate reality.

    Get rechargeable batteries. Yuk yuk.

  10. David says...

4 remotes, 2 chucks, 1 classic .. and I use Energizer Lithium batteries. They last FOREVER and actually make the Wiimote a little lighter!

  11. Vinny says...

What sort of batteries are ggod for the wii remotes because can’t some deamage the remote?

  12. Guch says...

2, the one packed in and one with Wii Play. I barely use the other one, so I didn’t really even need to get that second one. Unless one is farther than the other… then that’s when laziness kicks in and I reach for the closer one.

  13. InvisibleMan says...

4 remotes, one came with Wii Play. I bought rubberized “skins” for 2 of them.

    3 nunchucks.

1 Wavebird, and at least 5 GameCube controllers (don’t ask!).

  14. NeuroMan42 says...

I have just 2 and the Classic controller. There is 3 of us in the house but only 2 play most of the time.

  15. bOB says...

    2 wiimotes, 2 nun-chucks, 1 classic, and a partridge in a pear tree….but I hardly think that is relevant.

  16. Derek B. says...

I have two Wiimotes and two nunchuks.

I am more of a single-player kind of guy, so two controllers suffices. My girlfriend likes to play multiplayer a lot…Elebits, Wii Sports, Rayman Raving Rabbids or WarioWare. The interesting thing about Wii is how quickly a situation can change, though…I’ll be playing Metroid one minute, and my girlfriend and her friends - who have never played Wii - will see me, and instantly they want to play some multiplayer stuff. It goes from a single-player Metroid sessions to a mini Wii party in a matter of minutes…people who have never played Wii before still fall in love with it the first time they try it, even to this day. I think Wii owners may sometimes take for granted how unique, fun and fresh Wii really is.

And I second sakuragi: Everyone should get the Nyko Wiimote charger. It completely eliminates the need for AA batteries, and elegantly houses your Wiimotes in a charging dock that looks beautiful next to the Wii, matching both the look and colour of the console. It also has two bright LEDs that signify the charge. I keep my Wiimotes sitting in that dock at all times when I’m not playing, and I haven’t had anything less than a fully-charged Wiimote in the months that I’ve owned it. Easily, the best Wii accessory on the market.

I have 2 wiimotes and 2 nunchucks as well (and a classic controller). I definitely recommend buying the Nyko charger and save yourself the trouble. It’s well worth they money.

  18. neko to kuruma says...

I have 2 Wii-motes, 1 nunchaku, and 1 Classic Controller. And from the looks of what you guys are saying I should get that Nyko charging station. I’m thinking that would be a definitely purchase before I get my hands on GHIII, as that game will be seeing hours and hours of play from me.

Kale: http://www.nds-central.com has some pretty good looking replacement cases. I know other sites do too but I forget what they are.

  19. Wii Wii says...

    2

    Usually only need 2 anyways.

I hear Wii play is not worh getting another wiimote for.

  20. dlindema says...

I bought Wii play without the remote for $20. I only play Tanks! and I don’t feel ripped off in the slightest.

  21. jjt says...

2 MOTES 2 NUNCHUCKS 2 batteries each rechargable

  22. rokerovakero says...

“…and about 1,000 AA batteries. Yuk yuk”. ever heard of the ecology? the rechargable battery have been on stores for like 10 years… just go to any walmart and say “señor Juan, baterias recargables por favor” and don’t forget to say gracias…

  23. Phil Myth says...

    2 Wii-motes, 2 Nunchucks and one Classic.

Though my little brother, who also has a Wii also has 2 motes and 2 chucks.

  24. BlockSS says...

I have two remotes, two nunckucks own classic controller and one wavebird.. and also have the NYKO charging station and havent bought any batteries since the month of March..

  25. Rushli0n says...

    4 Wii-Motes (1 packaged, 2 bought, 1 w/ Wii Play)
    4 Nunchucks (1 packaged, 3 bought)
    1 classic (bought)
2 Wavebirds (a necessity for GC games)

I gave 3 GC controllers to my fiancee’s little cousin when I bought the Wii and kept the Wavebirds.

I also have a charger, but it’s not a Nyko one, some other 3rd party.

It sucks having to replace batteries for the other two Wii-motes and two Wavebirds, but alas.

  26. Mario ownage says...

WOW!I’m suprised the accurate predicition he made……I have 2 chucks & 2 motes also lol, and the Nyko stand(I bought that when I got my Wii, haven’t had to buy ONE battery every since!!!)The only reason I’m gonna buy 2 more chucks, 2 more motes, 1 more Nyko stand(with rech. batteries), and 4 classic controllers, is for Super smash bros. brawl
