The highest ranked Wii games (so far)

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 at 8:00am by Blake

34538_boss04.jpgAccording to Metacritic:

  1. Super Mario Galaxy (97)
  2. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (95)
  3. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition (91)
  4. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (90)
  5. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure (87)
  6. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (85)
  7. Super Paper Mario (85)
  8. MLB Power Pros (83)
  9. WarioWare: Smooth Moves (83)
  10. Madden NFL 07 (81)

I think Twilight Princess, RE4, and Smooth Moves are overrated. Excite Truck should be on that list, too. Discuss.

I agree that RE4 (a damn Gamecube game) and Twilight Princess (another Gamecube game) should not be on that list since they are not true Wii games. I truely hope that Wii will start getting core AAA titles in 2008. All All I need now is to get the PS3 to complete my gaming needs. Wii for 1st and 2nd party games and PS3 for the intense HardCore gaming. Sorry… I just don’t think we will ever see epic titles like Metal Gear Solid on the Wii with all the advance AI, Physics and other enhancements that only high processing GPUs and CPUs can do.

360 still (Damn after 2 damn yrs) have hardware related problems and I am not in the mood to play the musical game “360 ship off for repair game at least 3 times a yr”. So WiiPS3 is it for me… sorry if i am off topic. LOL.

  3. kuRta!_eRt says...

Exite Truck should be there indeed and Wii Sports too. Other than that, it looks like a pretty sad list so far…

  4. McClain142 says...

Pretty surprised to not see Wii Sports on there.

  5. Jack says...

Wii Sports and the mainstream video game press’ reaction to it is a whole ‘nother can of worms :-)

  6. neko to kuruma says...

Hey now, this isn’t the highest ranked Wii tech demos. ;)

  7. Atlantis1982 says...

    >.> Wait, you think TP is overrated yet clearly Mario Galaxy is? Surely you jest?

  8. Noremakk says...

Hah, I always make myself lists like this around Christmas time to know what to ask for… But now I’m thinking: why do it myself if I can just wait for Infendo to do it? :P

Excite Truck was tons of fun, but critically bashed to no end for lack of substance. I wish there was a list without sports games, because there’s a large group of us who just don’t like them.

  9. jamie says...

Excite truck instead of smooth moves? Noooooooo!! I love smooth moves, had many a laugh with that game. Excite truck was good, maybe better than madden, not smooth moves though, no way.

  10. sakuragi says...

Twilight Princess overrated? No way, not even Wario Ware, short but very fun game.

  11. TommE says...

Seriously, I love the Mario series but I really think Mario Galaxy is a little overrated. Crazy Nostalgia and great game structure and I love the grav effects but once I got all the stars and beat it I was just left with a feeling that I wasn’t fulfilled with the game. Maybe I’m just getting old and bitter…

  12. used cisco says...

Smooth moves is pretty damn fun, but yeah, games like Excite Truck and Wii-Sports are 2 of several Wii games that have been lost to the “I don’t really get it and it doesn’t cater to my hardcore sensibilities” mentality that is prevalent in the reviewing community. Another good one is SSX blur.

  13. nilcam says...

MLB Power Pros should be rated higher; I don’t like sports and I am addicted to the arcade-style gameplay it brings. Also, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core should be on the list. It is easily one of the most polished and entertaining 2D fighters ever made. Add in an arcade stick or Classic Controller and Guilty Gear is a fighting fan’s dream game. Also, I find it sad that Dewy’s Adventure, Mercury Meltdown Revolution, Geometry Wars: Galaxies and Ghost Squad did not make the list.

  14. Rob says...

I wouldnt say say that Twilight Princess and RE4 are over-reated, but they could perhaps be banned based on them being Wii-makes.
Wario Ware should never be up there. It was quite an amusing game for about 20 minutes.
Ones missed off I reckon are Mario Strikers and Excite Truck. Two very enjoyable games.
Also I’m not too sure if I can add MoH:Hereos2. You guys across the Pond have it and have been giving it enough of a shout out. It’s a game that I am really looking forward to it.

I’m going to go against the mainstream and say this list looks about right. Wii Sports and Excite Truck are fine, but I wouldn’t score either one over 80/100. Though I haven’t played Smooth moves or MLB. TP and RE4 may be remakes, but they are both excellent and its not too hard to justify the high scores (though I agree that Z&W and MP3 could be above them). My major beef would be Super Paper Mario, which I had high hopes for and would rate around a 60/100 personally.

  16. AC says...

yeah, MARIO STRIKERS is probably the most fun game on the wii, so it should be on that list. other games that should have made the list instead of some of the wiimakes should have been:

    trauma center
    elebits
    BWii
    geometry wars galaxies

  17. AC says...

obviously wii sports has to be on that list too.

  18. elmer says...

My borther and I have talked this over quite a bit and our opinion is:

Twighlight Princess is overated over the course of the whole game, but the first 1/3rd of the game is the most awsome thing we ever played and the last 2/3rds are mearly lots of fun. It’s just sad that the momentumn swings the wrong way, and you get more of the same old dungeon crawling and townspeople, but less of the old genius level design and interesting characterisation.

In fact, I’d go as far as to say if Nintendo issued an edited version of the game, it could very well deserve and even overqualify itself for the accolades it recieved, without remaking it from scratch. Oh, and have direction sensing when you swing the Wiimote. I can only dream.

  19. deepthought says...

I agree on TP- I can’t get past the water temple. Not because it’s hard. Because I don’t care enough to go on.

That scene where you took off on horseback to save the kids and you enter Hyrule Field for the 1st time was amazing- the actoin was story driven, there was a sense of urgency, and you were in a totally new area. Even the horseback combat was new and refreshing against mobs of hog riding fiends. But then it was back to formulaic Zelda. Push block. Blow up boulder. With no story connection. I’ve done it all before. I don’t need to do it again.

  20. ECC says...

then say goodbye to the zelda franchise if thats how you feel….

  21. T. Smitty says...

    huhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?????
RE4 was awesome. It’s a lot more replayable than any other titles on the
    Wii so far.

  22. cdub says...

I’ve had tons of fun playing Smooth moves at parties. It’s super accessible. It belongs up there.

  23. Andrew G. says...

I have to agree that Smooth Moves is terribly overrated. I also feel that way about Zack and Wiki. I am very underwhelmed with that purchase. Eh, at least it’s creative enough.

I have to disagree with you, Blake, on your opinion about Twilight Princess, though. While it could have been a lot harder (it was far too easy), it was still a great game that I have enjoyed playing through a second time thus far.

But we’re all entitled to our own opinions.

  24. elmer says...

Don’t get me wrong. I’m certainly not one of those people who feels Zelda is tired and the formula needs to be overhauled or killed. No.

If you didn’t have dungeons and blocks and boomerangs and bombs and arrows, it simply wouldn’t be a Zelda game.

What disappointed me about TP was that it didn’t sustain the strokes of design genius that have kept the same old formula feeling fresh. It’s actually something I personally feel Phantom Hourglass has achieved amazingly well, making it one of my picks for most underrated game of the year.

It felt like Nintendo had split the developers into separate teams and told them to each make a dungeon and put it all together at the end, thus breaking the clever integration of items they had before. And where the story of say OOT slowly rises to a malevolent crescendo by the end of the game, TP starts incredibly atmospheric with an engaging twist, and then gets progressively sunnier (literally) and happy-go-lucky, until it races you through a tour of the old dungeon and puzzle types for an all too soon end. As if they made the game back to front.

What annoyed me was the potential was AND STILL IS there for my favourite game of all time, and all it would take is some cleverly editing of the order and integration of the game (and a rewrite of the towns-people characterisation).

Perhaps in a Twilight Princess Master Quest.

  25. Daniel Primed says...

That list is quite good and when you include the games that AC menioned like:
    Trauma Centre
    Blebits
    Batallion Wars 2
    Geometry Wars Galaxies

The Wii really does have a much better game line up. You have to remember that this in the space of 1 year. So with that in mind I think its a great list.

  26. pjlucky says...

    All games are over-rated.
It’s done by “The Man” to make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

  27. Stan says...

Elebits definately does not deserve to be on this list. Next time you upload your Wii, check your memory. Look at all the games you have as far as memory goes. Zelda, one block. Wario Ware, 1 block. Metroid, 2 blocks, acceptable. Elebits? 109. I’m not sure if this is the same for everyone, but that was my case. 109 for one game. That’s at least 50 games of space, and those are games that did make the list. I deleted my Elebits memory. Maybe if it were a better quality game, I would have kept it.

  28. Fairlady Z says...

Super Paper Mario is easily the most overrated game on that list that I’ve played. Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda deserve their high scores. I wish Metroid Prime 3 got more recognition/sales; it’s a great game.

  29. deepthought says...

@ ECC- yeah I kinda did kiss the series goodbye. for now anyways.

which is a shame- zelda II introduced me to gaming. I was a zelda fanatic. I’ll never give up my nintendo power collection, in large part b/c of the fantastic zelda comic in about 10 issues of them.

but after TP I really feel like zelda didn’t keep up with the times. Storytelling has become a huge part of how I experience games. jade empire was a blissful gaming experience. Right now, i am only starting vampires: the masquerade, but the interactivity and constant story connection is great.

Zelda has such a rich universe to draw on. I really think the formula does need to be overhauled. Over the last generations, gaming has brought us so much closer to the story, and zelda hasn’t kept up with that pace.

still.. maybe i’ll give wind waker a try… though i hear there’s a lot of fishing at the end….

  30. Derek B. says...

To those who feel Twilight Princess is “overrated” and doesn’t deserve mention on this list…it is not humanly possible for me to disagree with you any more than I already do.

It is the best Zelda game ever made. IMHO.
