Super Mario Galaxy - Orchestral music video

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 at 1:11pm by Jake

-Composed by Koji Kondo

I can’t help but be happy when I watch this clip. Why?, you ask? Because unlike Twilight Princess and Brawl, Galaxy will be completely orchestrated! To many this isn’t such a big deal, but to a musician such as myself, this is fantastic news!

The music from both this game and Brawl sound really good. I’m very impressed.

Prerecorded music goes hand in hand with “Loading…” screens, in my experience. I’ll take synthesized music and continuous gameplay any day.

WOW, a big BIG smile appeared in my face as i heard this, i don´t have anything against TP music(sounds tremendously good to me) but man, this is so inspiring! Playing this game will be a blast.

TP music was great! Some of the best yet, but it they were still just high quality midis. Same with brawl…great music, but still pc generated.

This makes me feel a lot better about the Athena / Harmon Kardon 5.1 setup that I just got! Can’t wait to hear the orchestra in my living room!

Dude!, can i go play to your house??

Seriously this game is clearly the GOTY.

I really love the music they’ve been using for trailers.

This could be done digitally now with a pro tools system, but seeing Miyamoto sitting there I remember why a Super Mario Bros needs an expensive orchestra doing the music. This might fight with Spore as game of the decade!

    Wow. That was truly beautiful…

…and it makes the wait even harder.

I’m sure I’m the only one who feels this way, but…. Bring back the chiptunes already. This doesn’t sound like Mario, it sounds like a Disney version of Zelda.

    @raindog469:
Man, get your flame umbrella now!!(actually not, we are not at GAF or anything;))

I´m sorry to post again, but i just wanna say that i listened to this video at least 20 times today, i have not been this amazed by videogame music in a long long time.

While I appreciated the quality of orchestrated music, the fact is that Zelda uses music in a way that only midi can do.

from the wiki: “The battle theme has followed a similar formula since Ocarina of Time. As Link sneaks up to an enemy, the track begins as a quiet and tense background theme, comparable to incidental music. When he is sighted by enemies, additional instruments are added to the source track. Upon attacking them, the music immediately changes to a faster-paced march version of the original theme, with a vigorous percussion track. When all enemies in the respective area are exterminated, the battle music will conclude, and return to the default song for that location.”

You can’t do that with a prerecorded track yet. I’ll take the dynamic layering from Zelda over the start/stop soundtrack you’ll get from a fully orchestrated game.

That being said, I think that a full orchestra SHOULD be used for any and all static music, such as cut scenes.

Even though the synthesized Brawl music is ages ahead of everyone else, I still wish the disc had more space for an orchestral track (it’s gonna be a big game as is) even if it had to go on two discs. At least the music still sounds great and will sound even better to intense fighting and explosions.

I think pre-recorded music will actually reduce the loading time. It also free up processor speed as well, since the machine don’t have to produce the music as well. All it does is play the music directly from the cd, just like a regular cd player. A regular cd player runs at 1 bit! It dosen’t have to load the song neither, all the machine has to do is find the song on the disc a play it.

I had no idea all the music would be orchestrated. Alot of the gameplay video featured music that sounded sequenced. Hopefully the next Zelda game will be orchestrated because it really needs to be. Twilight princess had such an awesome soundtrack and it would’ve sounded amazing orchestrated. I also hope the next StarFox game has an orchestrated soundtrack, because that was the only good thing about StarFox: Assault.

    Brawl will have orchestrated music…

I’d really like to hear a clarinet solo later on in that piece.
