Smash Bros. Brawl - control schemes confirmed

Friday, June 8th, 2007 at 6:53am by David

Super Smash Bros. Brawl controlsA lot of rumors about Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s control scheme were just squashed, or rather confirmed. Four different methods of control are available for the game! Sideways Wii Remote, Remote + Nunchuk, Classic Controller, and GameCube Controller will all be supported. Guess I should’ve kept a Wavebird around .. d’oh!

Which way will you play?

    cc ftw

Awesome, I now officially have enough controllers for a 4-player smackdown! Thank you Sakurai!

I’m wondering which one actually plays better. I’m curious as to how well the lone wiimote plays, I can already see myself “jumping” with the wiimote and doing a hard shove to smash opponents… that’ll feel so rewarding :D So sakurai preffers the GC because of rumble, but does that mean the other setups aren’t as great or does it mean he just likes the old style and doesn’t want to change his ways?

I just hope online is available and relatively robust (Strikers charged gives me some hope but I’d preffer a 4p worldwide melee instead of a 2vs2 local battle). Out with the online deets!

First, origionally sakurai said it was gonna be just classic controller and gamecube cause he thought the wiimote would spoil the game. it could be that the wiimote may well be used for games such as the sandbag from melee, or other such side events.

Secondly, to Liraco, there is no 2 Vs 2 local play with the wii, it’s all online, I’ve been playing alongside my brother online quite a bit over the last week, only thing is it records all this data under the Miis name, so when you do 2Vs2 it’s say, Jamie with Guest Vs Whoever. it is pretty darn good online if you ask me, but this is a person who’s never used xbox live.

    gc controller ftw.

Also, why the big deal about wifi? The slightest lag in a game like Smash, and the whole experience is ruined.

I personally am going to try out wifi, but I’ll probably stick to local single- or multi-player.

Wiimote/Nunchuk might be interesting, but I doubt I’ll ever try just the wiimote, and I don’t have a classic controller yet…

Wow…*mind blown* best way to wake up in the morning. I am still concerned about how the ‘mote/nunchuck and sideways wii-mote will work, but I played MK: armageddon and that seemed to control pretty well wii-mote/nunchuck, maybe they used that idea. All I know is that I wanna see it in action now.

    wavebird controller!

I think it’s pretty sweet how all the different control schemes are compatible, and I’ll try them all out, but I think I’ll end up sticking with the cube controller.

I didn’t think they’d have Wiimote control (sideways or otherwise), but choice is always good! I think I’ll stick to my GameCube controller — nothing tops it.

We need more games that give the player the choice of controller (since the Wii is compatible with so many different types). This is definately a great idea, and I’m in a position to try them all. In the end, though, I’ll likely end up using the GCN or Classic controller. But maybe I’ll be impressed with something else, and that excites me.

Sideways Wiimote looks kind of cool.

Sideways sounds kinda cool if I can go for the final kill by grabbing it like a hammer and smash the opponent. :-) Hulk Smash!

I’ll probably stick to using the GC controller if they keep the same controls from previous games. I am looking forward to seeing how the wiimoter and the nunchaku will be used though.

The game has no release date and I can already see people complaining about the online play with Brawl once you try it(and you guys seem to want it soo much). Honestly it is a fighting game, all fighting games lag, current online fighting games are 2 player, 4 player online is going to be horrible; any lag, even the slightest, and the game plays completely differently.

Gamespy currently runs MK: Aremegeddon online; and it is horrible, now I know it seems to be a stupid comparison but it is run by gamespy, how are they going to run brawl online if a game this slow paced lags horribly. (Melee is about 5 times faster with (some) backgrounds running fast plus 2 more players, Brawl im guessing is better than that too) I am going to play online once and probably never again, now this is an empty wish, but please don’t complain about it when it comes out.

Having never owned a Game Cube I am super curious about all these schemes. I owna Classic controller and love it! but I am really interested in the Wii Nunchuck and lone Wiimote play style.

    awesome i gotta get this

I’ m going to throw my vote in the classic controller bucket. I love the feel of that thing in my hands and it brings the nostalgia bus back to town.

I never owned a Cube before but is just matter of time until I get used to the Wavebird that I bought for the Wii..(So used to the PS2 controller).
But thats really good to have 3 other choises and I really like the Wii-mote nunchuck combo , but I’ll still try out the Wii-mote sideways and a good thing I already have the classic controller so I’ll give it a shot too.

Definately GC controller for me, but I wonder whether the game will support all four types at once (for four player games). It should, but you never know…
