Review: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)

With a huge Mario title coming out this week, a would-be huge game is going overlooked. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii is a testament to the quality of game you can get when huge game companies put their heads together. Graphically, the game is almost flawless. Sound is also well done, with the exception being the lack of national anthems for the country you choose.
Playing as characters from the Mario and Sonic universes is fine, but competing with them as yourself with a Mii is even better. In fact, if this game didn’t include the use of Miis, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as I did.
Gameplay isn’t too bad for most events. Controls are pretty much a motion based update to the classic arcade game Track & Field. The repetitive motions are surprisingly fun and you can genuinely get worn out and tired from playing this game. After completing circuits, the game prompts you to take a break. Heed this warning; my arms are still sore while I’m typing this!
I can firmly advise renting this game. At the very least, it’s worth a Saturday afternoon of being silly with your friends.

“At the very least”…
i suppose this would be a must buy in case your house is where everyone of your close friends go after school (closest to my school) to chill and play games for a while.

Me and my friends are always looking for a new game to play in a party environment. Between this and Rayman RR2 we have our next few parties all wraped up.

Just wanted to add that the game is a huge blast if you have people to play with. I was really surprised just how well the controls work for this game. It really feels like a spiritual successor to Wii Sports, and I mean that as a compliment.

@AC
You may have wanted to own that phrase. By saying better to spend “your money on” rather than “my money on” you imply that everyone’s gaming needs are the same. Most of the games released this month will do nothing in a party environment. I could never invite a dozen people over to watch me play Galaxy, but we can easily take turns going through Mario and Sonic or Rayman. I can understand if this is not what you are looking for.

It actually sounds very cool. I may have to wait awhile though since I just bought Galaxy and have other games that I am looking forward to.
