Okami for Wii rumor gets new life

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 at 3:10pm by Jack

Okami for WiiListen up, Konami CAPCOM. Okami is the game that was designed for the Wii, but doesn’t know it yet. It will find its way to that system, if you have any wits about you whatsoever.

1Up.com’s Quartermann hints at something:

Quartermann also contends another popular rumor still has life in it: Okami on Wii. Capcom is already working on an upgraded port of the overlooked Zelda-style adventure, complete with Wiimote support.

Simply put, Okami would sell, sell, sell on the Wii. It’s a Wii game in PS2 clothing and I think — nay, I know – it would positively explode on the Wii. It would click. It would make sense. It would fight the Antichrist and win and then do a jig like Bruce Willis in that Boyscout movie. You get the idea.

Just make it happen CAPCOM!

I would buy Okami for Wii in a nanosecond.

  2. gojiguy says...

If capcom actually puts some effort into this port, including new features, areas, and a graphical overhaul. I might buy it. But if it’s just a PS2 game with Wii controls, I’m not getting suckered in.

I have been saying this for a long time now, probably since I knew Wii had pointer functionality.

Though I think I saw an interview with the games creator who said he didnt like the idea of Okami on Wii…maybe this time big wigs in Capcom corporate will do some good by realizing that a fairly quick port would actually be profitable, and not a cop-out.

It doesn’t even need a graphical overhaul, from what I’ve seen it looks pretty damn good anyway, just maybe a few extra incentives here and there. But from what I’ve heard about that game, if it were to come out on Wii I’d be standing outside the store waiting to get my hands on a copy as early as possible.

Are more ports really what the Wii needs?
I mean… this game played more than fine with a normal controller. Granted, it was overlooked, but I don’t think begging for a last gen port is a good message to send to devs, regardless of the game.

I’d rather see an original sequel to the game.

  6. HylianTom says...

I’d love to see it in widescreen with Wii controls. Capcom would be foolish to ignore this opportunity.. just like RE4: Wii Edition is printing money for them, so too can Okami: Wii Edition.

I don’t get it. If casual games = success on the Wii, why would Okami sell, sell, sell for the Wii?

  8. dubnobasswithmyheadman says...

I’ve been holding off on the PS2 version just in case a Wii version comes out. Although I would prefer a proper sequel instead of a port.

  9. InvisibleMan says...

Same thing here: except I wouldn’t mind a port, as long as it is expanded to widescreen.

That game looks great as it is.

Oh, you mean CAPCOM thinks that twiching dual analog sticks approach the feeling of painting with a brush better than moving your arm as if you were actually painting? Yeah, I thought so…

Ports rule. I don’t own anything besides a Wii and DS so the more te merrier!

I was about halfway through this game when my PS2 finally died. If a it comes out for Wii, I have one less reason to buy another PS2.

  12. Jack says...

“I don’t get it. If casual games = success on the Wii, why would Okami sell, sell, sell for the Wii?”

Who the heck ever said that?

  13. ResidentialEvil says...

I’m with gojiguy, if they basically remake it for the Wii with new content, etc., then it’s something to get excited about. If it’s simply a port with Wii controls *zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*

  14. KillerHeroes says...

Make it support widescreen and 480p and I’m on board.

  15. burndive says...

As someone who’s never owned a PS2, and been brought back “in” to the gaming scene by the Wii, (specifically, by Twilight Princess) I would jump at the chance to play this on the Wii.

  16. dlindema says...

I know it sends the wrong message if we want ports from ps2…But this one, as Jack said, is a Wii game in ps2 clothes, hell it could even be a DS game, cel shaded graphics and stylus/celestial brush would rule. I wouldnt mind an Okami 2 though either, built from the ground up for Wii (maybe with a complimentary DS Okami game, with unlockable content by connecting the two??)

  17. Deax2er says...

I’ve been thinking this was a Wii game, before the Wii even released. This on the ps2 didn’t do it justice.

  18. deepthought says...

sounds awesome- i’d be excited for okami on the wii

  19. raindog469 says...

I’d preorder this. I don’t care if it’s a port because I never played the original, as beautiful as it is.

  20. samfish says...

I think this is the most obvious move of all time. Imagine! A Zelda-esque game that makes good use of the Wiimote on a Nintendo system? Nah… core Nintendo fans wouldn’t be interested in that at all…

As far as the port vs sequel goes, I’d really rather have both. If getting a sequel to a game like Okami means getting a port first, bring it on, I say!

I also really, really, really want a Godhand port and/or sequel.
Seriously. Play Godhand. It was Clover’s best game hands down.

  21. Paolo says...

    @samfish

I’m with ‘ya pal!! I played the original one and I found it, gameplay wise, more fresh than the last chapter of Zelda.
Ninty fans would be swarming to this game… When I played it I just couldn’t stop thinking that it would be a perfect Wii game!!!

Besides, on the PS2, graphically, was awsome but as it is GoW2 and Shadow of the Colossus has major graphical slowdown, which would be history on a Wii porting.

I hate to say it, but a straight port with just some minor graphical ajustments (maybe higher def textures and code improvement to keep slowdown at bay) and the full support of Wiimote and I would buy it again, because it’s so beatiful that this game deserves a second run-through!!!

  22. Ry says...

Okay, I’d like a show of hands; how many of you bought the Wii so you could play half assed remakes of games released on last generation’s consoles?

  23. raindog469 says...

I bought a Wii so I could play awesome games. I really couldn’t care less if they’re awesome games that fanboys have already played because they owned all 3 consoles last time around.

  24. AC says...

i’d rather capcom start coming out with more original IP like zack and wiki. they already cashed in with RE4. That was great, but its time for more new IP. now if they decide to do the sequel to okami for the wii, then maybe i’d start to get excited.

  25. James Kochalka says...

I never owned a PS2, so I’d love Okami for the Wii.

  26. dlindema says...

*raises both hands* I think that this game really wasnt done justice on PS2, if you played it, you would also get the feeling that some extra aspect was missing, I think that missing aspect, is Nintendo’s remote control.

Though I also doubt that buying an Okami port would make Capcom only do rehashes hence forth. I think that since Okami was such a departure from Capcom usual, that buying it would only also encourage efforts like Zak and Wiki. If anything supporting this original game again, would just mean that new IPs have a better chance on Wii, thus we get more new and original games for our favorite white console.
