Okami confirmed for Wii

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 at 9:17pm by Jake

okami symbolCapcom announced at their event in London that Okami will be coming to the Wii. Developed by Clover Studios, Okami is the wildly popular PS2, action, adventure title which received many Game of the Year awards for 2006. The title is best known for a beautiful cel-shaded art style, addicting gameplay mechanics, and a in depth story worthy of the likes of Zelda. Other few details from the London event included using the Wii remote as the Celestial Brush, and some waggle will be used for combat. There is also a possibility for a 480p and widescreen upgrade, but no official info has been released. Over all this is a PS2 title that is worthy to be “ported” to the Wii. Okami Wii is planned for an early 2008 release.

While critically acclaimed, Okami sold poorly on the PS2.
I really can’t call it a port, because it is more of a second chance.

I am betting that Okami on the Wii will outsell the PS2 version.

Awesome. I’ve been holding out on the PS2 version for this.

This will be the second Capcom port i’ve purchased for Wii… never thought i’d utter those words …

  3. Brian says...

Well what a tasty news snack! I never bought the PS2 version. This looks like the way to go.

I haven’t played Okami yet, and I’ve heard people discuss that the Wii was the perfect platform for it. I definitely plan to pick this up. Let’s just hope it doesn’t coincide with Brawl’s release, because I don’t know anyone who would throw Brawl aside for something else.

HAHAHA! this is great! I knew this game was meant for the Wii before they even revealed the Wii remote! I can’t wait for this release!

Were there ANY original, ground up built games from Capcom, for the Wii announced?

I mean a port of an old last gen game, that was not intended for motion controls no matter how acclaimed the game was is sort of a letdown.

Where are the MADE from ground up, all new capcom games for the Wii.

PS2 rehash with tacked on motion controls…. No thanks.

    @DonWii - elegantly said.

For some reason, I really don’t view this game as a port…I can’t put my finger on it, but it seems like the game was actually a ground up Wii title, that was simply too impatient to wait for the Wii to exist.

Plus, how many times did I say this would be perfect on these and other boards, thank you Capcom, here is my money.

@ Wii Wii: Umbrella Chronicles is a Capcom title built from the ground up for Wii.

Anyway, this would be fantastic news if I didn’t already own the PS2 version. I’ll probably skip this one, even though it’s a great idea.

@Wii Wii: and Zack & Wiki and Everybody Loves Golf.

So so AWESOME!! Such good news… just.. awesome

    Mine!!!

I already played the PS2 version and I’m really going to put the two versions side by side.
As I said before I hope they will make some improvement graphics-wise because the PS2 version suffered of bad slowdowns and an overall low texture resolution.

Aside from that, the Wii version should feel much more natural using the wiimote to control the celestial brush.

Let’s also hope it will come out with a mid-range price tag (30-40euros, 30ish $ for you)!!

This is a very antcipated game from i can see , ppls in other game forums are going nuts over this news … its also will help sell more Wii’s (like if it really need one) I read also from 360/ps3 owners this alone is a garantee Wii purchase them ..

Just like RE4 maybe will sell for $29.99 and maybe Capcom will add features, extra content and add more polish to it…

    Im sold.

I see Nintendo and Capcom are getting along very well from the results of thier efforts put in into thier games . Capcom really knows how to work and push the Wii’s hardware … Capcom’s RE:UC will be an example even if is an on rail game the graphics are put into good used showing off lots of textures, lightings and shaders and this is the beginning of what could be next after RE:UC…

  16. elmer says...

Well I for one am completely pissed off.

I mean, I’m all for Okami on Wii, and I’m sure it will be every bit as brilliant as I hope.

It’s just that I KNOW Capcom is making no effort. The word is already out that the port is being handled by Ready At Dawn (fine), that they’re getting NO assistance (Not so fine) and that additional content depends on whether their porting work is complete before an arbitrary ‘early 2008′ release (crap!).

What does this smell of? MGS:Twin Snakes all over again. But with less effort. While the others are getting the new games, we’re getting a port of a last gen game we should have gotten anyway, that they cared so little about they handed it off to a Western Dev.

Meanwhile the systems without screen oriented pointing motion controls hand devices or NES games are getting a game about a man pointing his hand at things on the screen and making grabbing motions with an Ex-NES audience.

Monster Hunter does not make up for it, because really, they had no choice what with PS3 bombing in Japan and all.

Capcom make good games, but they stink. I want some effort! Some love! Some lead Dev Teams backed with more than minimal funding! We deserve it!

  17. KonohaShinobi says...

OMFG YESSSS!!!! This was one of the first games I thought of when the Wii was announced! OH THANK YOU CAPCOM!

  18. samfish says...

Okami (and all the Clover games, really) is one of my favorite games ever…and while it’s a good fit in some ways on the Wii, bear in mind that this IS a port and it WASN’T designed with the Wii in mind.
Anyone who played this game knows there is some VERY tricky platforming going on throughout and having camera controls is usually pretty crucial. Having a camera is especially helpful in the battles since there is no lock-on, you pretty much HAVE to be able to swivel the camera around to keep your focus on your opponent.

I guess what I’m getting at is that while in some ways this will be a great game for the Wii, it likely WON’T be superior to the original on the PS2 as a whole. Such is just the nature of a port. It wouldn’t be as good as, say, Okami II, built from the ground-up for the Wii.

That being said, even though I own it for the PS2, I’ll be buying this one on day 1…if only because if it sells well enough, it makes it that much more likely that we’ll actually GET an Okami II made with the Wii specifically in mind.
For that reason alone, I encourage everyone to drop (hopefully) $30 bucks on this game, even if you already own it.

  19. Andrew-MG says...

I played through the first three hours of the PS2 version, and maybe I just haven’t gotten to the parts you talked about yet, but based on my experiences this will indeed be superior to the PS2 version. Making the brush symbols with the thumbstick was an exercise in patience, and it will go from frustrating to fun with the Wii remote, instantly.

I’m really looking forward to this.

  20. frstOne says...

As I always say, I’d prefer this on DS. I’m not very sure about drawing in the air.

  21. KillerHeroes says...

It’s been rumored for a while. I’m very happy that it’s finally been confirmed. A lot of people passed over or didn’t know about this great game.

  22. samfish says...

Only 3 hours? haha- trust me, Chief – you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! You’ve got about another 47 or so hours ahead of you!
I’d say that the brush techniques about only 10-15% of the gameplay, tops. They really aren’t even that important in a lot of situations, to be honest.
The Gale Shrine and Tsuta Ruins are probably the most platforming-heavy, if memory serves. The Moon Cave has a good bit of platforming action, too.

  23. gausser says...

Haven’t played the PS2 version. Looking forward to getting it for the Wii. Hopefully it controls well.

  24. InvisibleMan says...

    Capcom finally sees the light!

I was holding off on getting it on PS2 since this game was a no-brainer for Wii.
