Metroid Prime 3 ‘Dread’ reference a ‘coincidence’

Lovers of a Metroid 2D revival were hit with a setback today as a reference first pointed out by IGN’s Matt Casamassina was squelched in an MTV interview with Retro.
MTV: What’s the story behind the apparent reference in “Metroid Prime 3″ to “Metroid Dread,” the rumored but never-confirmed 2D game some fans hope is being made at Nintendo?
Pacini: “It’s not what you think it means… it as something that was overlooked and wasn’t in any way indicating anything about the handheld game. We know no information about the handheld games.
MTV: Are you suggesting that you got in trouble or something?
Pacini: Not at all. We actually had a fictional element of something else in the game that by a large coincidence could be read that we were giving a hint about “Metroid Dread” which was not the case. It’s a complete and utter coincidence.
And I am even more in the dark than I was before. Personally, I’m in love with the idea of a massive, immersing and wonderfully complex 2D Metroid on my DS. Make the graphics pop and give me an interactive map on the touch screen. Go to town. For now, though, I guess I’ll have to strum out the theme on my shiny new copy of Jam Sessions. Metroid Jam sesh, for the win.

Disappointing. A true sequel to Super Metroid would be awesome, in the vein of New SMB.
You know, when the GBA launched in 2001, I really thought we’d see a lot more games like New SMB than we have. New SMB is really one of the very few examples of a completely new game with the spirit of it’s ancestors.

I still don’t know why, at any level, everyone simply assumes that it would be Retro working on a portable Metroid game, even if there really was one in the works somewhere. Retro is focused on console games, that’s it. It’s not that big of a studio and they only have so many internal resources. If there was a new 2D Metroid in the works, logistics dictate that it would be in the hands of Nintendo EAD or NST like ALL THE PREVIOUS ONES. As much I would totally scream like a giddy little school girl at the idea of a new Metroid side-scroller in the fashion of New Super Mario Bros (Dear God, please?), I’m totally stoked to find out what this “new” project going on at Retro is. Either way, ladies, it’s too soon to start worrying about it, anyway. Corruption has only been out for a matter of weeks and the Retro team is taking a well-deserved vacation after completing the Prime trilogy. And let’s make one thing clear: HALO 3 SUCKS. It’s has some of the worst art direction I’ve ever seen in a game, and the level design is a never-ending train-wreck of a disaster. I’m actually thinking of trading it in towards Ninja Gaiden DS and Phantom Hourglass….So be thankful for Corruption and be grateful to Retro Studios and Nintendo instead of sitting there whining and bitching about little fanboy wet dreams. Besides, by the time I actually get around to finishing Prime 3 (my wife has commandeered my Wii with My Sims), Brawl will be out. It’s a great time to be a Nintendo fan, and I think everyone should enjoy that in and of itself instead of nit-picking and splitting hairs.

Whoa, whoa, whoa Kale, hold on a minute. I don’t think anyone was complaining, I think we are just a little disappointed by a bad coincidence. After their vacation (very well deserved) I want to see them work on the reviving of an old IP that Nintendo is supposed to.
As for Dread’s dev? As many of the original R&D1 staff as possible please.
Jack/Drew - 2D/2.5D Metroid, indeed FTW.

It will probably happen. Why would anyone admit to it so soon? Samus isn’t done.

Hey, hey, hey…. “Halo 3 sucks“?? Only a bit less than Halo 2, and if you loved that one, you certainly won’t be disappointed in the new one! But enough about me…
I think we all need a little bit of MySims, too! How you like that one, Kale?

Halo 3 doesn’t suck. I will however say it is by far the most overhyped game in history. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a good game.

not really surprised…why would retro have anything to do with a 2D metroid?

I want Metroid Kart.

The ending of Metroid Prime 3 (if you have 100% complete) suggests that there will be another Metroid game.
I really want Retro to put their creative minds and genius artists on a new and different IP for Nintendo.

Retro have NOTHING to do with Metroid Dread. Working for/with Nintendo means they have access to such information. It is not a coincidence Metriod Dread IS being made… (whether it’ll be finished is another story but it looks like it)
Nintendo are being insanely secretive with their 2008 lineup (this game even more so).
