Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 at 12:47am by Jake

MetroidmansizeeditAs you can see from the man to the right, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is finally here. One of the three highly anticipated AAA titles is now in our grubby, hardcore wanting hands. We had to wait an extra 9 months, but it looks like it was well worth the wait. Polished graphics, superior controls, and classic gameplay, what more could you ask for? But if for some strange reason you’re deciding to hold off from purchasing this title, take a look at the reviews again.

  • Nintendo Power – 10
  • Gametrailers - 9.6
  • IGN - 9.5
  • 1UP - 9
  • Gamedaily - 9
  • Gamespot - 8.5

Things to do: Pick up Prime 3, grab a coke, and boot up your Wii, because the fall lineup has started. Enjoy being a gamer!

I friggin’ hate GameSpot. They aren’t reliable, now that I see that even 1up had to admit this game is at least a 9. But 8.5? That’s on par with many games on their site, including Driver on the PC, which was “eh” to me. They say on the site that one of the bad things was it “Doesn’t do much different than the previous two Metroid Prime games.” The reason: it’s a Prime game. Don’t hate it ’cause it’s Prime.

gamespot sucks, i dont ever visit that site anymore. why go to gayspot when theres IGN and many other good reliable gaming sites out there?

LOL are you guys seriously bashing Gamespot based on a review that is generally .5 points lower? Aren’t reviews subjective to ones tastes anyway? Don’t get me wrong I read reviews and buy with confidence based on some reviews. However, it’s really all about your tastes when it comes down to in the end. The review greatly praises the game too so what’s the deal?

I go to Gamespot for news, but I only ever watch the Video Reviews, because then I don’t have to think. :P

Anywho, I’m holding off buying it because I’ve got a game rented already, and I’ve got another one coming from ebay any day now. I just have too many to beat first.

I’ll probably get it in a month or two, though.

  5. JaKo says...

im holding off on buying it cause unfortunately i dont have a Wii yet. if i could find one i would buy it, along with prime 3 in a heartbeat.
i cant believe that i still cant get a damn wii a year after its release. oh well, i guess ill just have a ton of games to beat when i finally do get one.

A 0.5 difference might be small, but there’s a huge subjective difference between a 9 and an 8.5 (i.e. games ratings are not a linear scale). an 8.5 is a good game, a 9 is a must buy potential classic.

  8. Roid says...

@Jonny, it’s actually 9 points lower than the average of the other ones. That’s a huge difference, especially on the high end of the scale.

The fact that they didn’t have much bad to say about it just shows how they like to be controversial for the sake of being controversial.

Gamespot also gave the original Metroid a 5.5 when it was released for the Virtual Console. One of the best NES games of all time, a breatkthrough platforming/adventure classic…a “mediocre” 5.5 because of frustrating invisible passageways, lack of a map, and too steep a “learning curve.”

You’ve got to be freaking kidding me. These are three of the coutnless aspects of Metroid that made it a classic…the seemingly endless and impossible-to-find secrets, the isolation cast by the sprawling depths of Zebes, and the difficulty of the game itself. By no means am I ranting as merely a fanboy, but also a critic. There is no reason to give a game like Metroid such a low score. Therefore, Gamespot fails.

As for their latest Metroid offense…I’ll be playing Metroid Prime: Corruption later today when I pick up my copy. Something tells me it is a MUCH better game than the 8.5 that Gamespot bestowed upon it.

This shouldn’t be a surprise, though. They gave Twilight Princess an 8.8 last year. The best Zelda ever made…an 8.8. Yet WarioWare: Smooth Moves received a 9.1, and Resident Evil 4, a freaking PS2 port, received an Editor’s Choice award (the only Wii game to receive one) and a 9.1 rating.

Clearly, there’s something in the water over at Gamespot.

  10. Dustin Rue says...

I have to defend gamespot a bit. If you’re unhappy with how they score then you’re putting a bit of fanboy bias on it. I just read the Metroid review and I have to agree. For a person today who may not have played the game, it may well be a frustrating experience. There are a lot of people who expect so much out of games these days that they won’t be able to appreciate what Metroid was when it was released.

You can’t allow you great you might have thought the game was years ago you have to compare it today’s standards to some extent. Flickering graphics, no mapping, poor direction on where to go next, those are all things that wouldn’t fly today.

  11. Hunter says...

feh number based review systems are fundamentally broken, its not like they called MP3 a bad game. More sites need to run on the review scale of Avoid it, Rent it, Buy it. Really thats the only advice the average gamer wants. As for those who would complain that it does not allow for you to see which buy it games are better that’s really when your personal tastes come in anyway. At the end of the year awards could be handed out and that is when you would see what was actually better than what based on panel decisions and other criteria.

  12. Doc_R says...

Listen to Hunter, he speaks the truth.

The only scale that makes sense is -
    1. avoid
    2. rent if you’re bored
    3. buy if you like that sort of thing or maybe just rent
    4. buy it
    5. buy it NOW!!!

  13. Jack says...

Amen to that, Jake… and I’m not even religious!

  14. Pnut says...

This is supposed to be a Metroid Prime 3 article, not a Hate Gamespot article.

From my perspective, the game is fantastic!!! Especially with what we have been given on the Wii so far, graphically, this game is beautiful!! It was like playing a PC game on my widescreen! The eeriness of the music and overall tone was cool as hell! A bit of a learning curve for novices to FPS-like games, but for the “hardcore” (God I hate that term), they will find this more immersive.

  15. Brian says...

Good ol gamespot! Can’t wait to pick this up today!

  16. j0nny DiGITAL says...

At the end of the day who’s buying the game anyway? You. Why bash someone for a general opinion they have? If you have a strong dislike for Gamespot why even mention it if it’s not worth the potential review readers time? Better yet, start your own site with reviews, new and the like.

  17. Mune says...

I guess most people feel the same way I do about some of these reviews: A lot of them seem biased and don’t enjoy giving out good reviews to Nintendo games. Maybe I’m just a fanboy, but I think this game deserved at least a 9 or better (if not an even higher score).

I’m really sick of games like BioShock (which probably did deserve a ten, but then again the widescreen issues would have changed my review score if I had been the one doing it) getting amazing scores, while games like MP3 end up getting the shaft. From what I’ve read, MP3 is amazing and deserves much better than what it’s gotten from reviewers like 1up and GameSpot.

Despite all my nagging and biased-ness (I am a tad biased toward Nintendo, or I wouldn’t be here), the reviews don’t change how I feel about the game. I’ll still get it (after I’ve beaten MP2), and I will still love every second of it. I just wish reviewers would go into reviewing games with a more open mind.

  18. TRichter says...

The reason people bash Gamespot is simple - they’re so predictable in their anti-Nintendo/Wii bias. Last night, as I contemplated picking up MP3 today, I said to myself, “Self, I can’t wait until Gamespot gives MP3 an 8 and launches their credibility into the garbage once more.” It’s like clockwork with them, which is why people get upset.

  19. NeuroMan42 says...

Only played an hour so far but damn… if this control setup was made for ALL console FPS I would be a very happy camper.

  20. InvisibleMan says...

I read the GameSpot review, and I can see where they are coming from… they really liked the game, but they lowered their score because of lack of multiplayer.

Nothing wrong with not having multiplayer, but you have to be fair: a good FPS that does have a good multiplayer added to it has to have a higher score!

Having said that, I don’t care for multiplayer this time around (and this is coming from a Halo 2 fan!): I just got the last non-reserved MP3 at my local store and I can’t wait to get home tonight to give it a try! FPS action with the Wii remote is the main reason I got a Wii.

And yes, even the GameSpot review indicates that this is a “must buy” title.

  21. KillerHeroes says...

I’m still as excited for this game as I was before any reviews came out. Buy the game and enjoy it. This game is awesome and is a must buy for any Wii owner. If you want to show these people that MP3 is deserving of more than just an 8.5, show them by supporting the game.

  22. BlockSS says...

I got it ….Ladies and Gentleman, Retro Studios has NAILED it. omg this game cant get any better …it plays at 60fps, controllers are next to keyboard/mouse no flaws, on my HDTV the graphics are amazing at 480p widescreen, great bloom lighting and particals effects, Most reveiws dont mention that the game includes Achievement points also rumor has it that they will unlock things and you’ll be able to trade them over wiiconnect 24. For last it said there is a secret in the game to be discovered .
Another cool thing I found the Visor goes up b4 scanning by pressing the minus button flick the wiimote up while still pressing minus also the auto lock …
This is a great to be classic game, this is just full of awesomeness..

note: today while in line to buy MP3 at GAMESTOP 3 ppl in front of me where asking if they had any Wii’s after they found out the MP3 was released today unfortunally they walk out empty handed …

  23. InvisibleMan says...

So, came to work late after staying up waaaay longer than planned playing this awesome game…

The graphics don’t disappoint: they are indeed the best that Wii currently can bring! They are, of course, not 360 or PS3 graphics, but the developers proved that you don’t need them with their choices of atmosphere and textures. The voice acting is sparce but top-notch, it enhances the game experience, and so does the sound effects.

Having said that, it is the new control scheme that really puts this game above all others, regardless of the platform! While I had a LOT of difficulty adapting to the control schemes of Metroid Prime 1 & 2, this one was absolutely intuitive and exciting. You really don’t need instructions on what to press or how to move: except for when bringing up special scan and control menus, you just do what you think you should do and it happens! Best moment was when the first lever came up and I simply reached out, twisted it, and pushed it back in without having to read any instructions… it was that logical! It’s as if the remote and the nunchuck are simply extensions of your arms.

It is definitely going to be difficult, maybe impossible, to go back to the dual-analog control for shooters from now on.

gameinformer gave it a 9.5 on its website
