Maybe Wii isn’t a third-party afterthought

Monday, January 28th, 2008 at 7:26pm by Blake

img14.jpgAccording to Krome Studios, the Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will feature five exclusive levels and with “places where the [PS3/360] story veers off… in a different direction, like the Jedi Temple level.”

I hope LucarsArts invests sufficient resources to make the Wii version unique, not half-baked. This is a start.

I really loved reading that. It would be a huge plus for Nintendo if the Wii version became the “one to get”.

does anyone know if the wii version will have all the cool physics stuff the other versions are going to.

@ terapwn will the wii version run 3 different physics engines? I’m guessing probably not. plus joystiq guessed that too. still, I bet you get to use the wiimote like a lightsaber. so that’s cool.

    @ terapwn:

Maybe not as strong as the others, but it will most certainly evolve around physics… and the sword play with the remote plus a good development on it, and the Wii might just get to be the version to get.

Also, remeber that while the Wii may not be able to pull physics like the 360, it can do pretty amazing stuff with it as we saw in Mario Galaxy!

As long as a game can simulate reality, not copy it exactly, they have me on board. If I want real life physics I’ll go back to college. This is a game, so it only has to convince me to a point. Uncanny valleys, and all that…

    Can Wii do physics? Yes

Will Force Unleashed do physics on Wii? No

I’m generally dubious on any Wii development that directly shares staff and resources with PSP development of the same game. It generally leaves Wii treated as a sub-dreamcast.

I’m not saying they’re a poor developer, but they certainly don’t have the pedigree that STAR WARS Wii GAME should have.

Again I point out that Gamecube was actually better supported, with Factor 5 on the case, pushing the hardware with exclusive content designed with the system in mind.

I’m highly doubtful that the Wii version will have the DMM, Euphoria, and Havok. Other than the storyline, those are the selling points of the game. Why would I want anything less? I’ll rent the Wii version to play the exclusive levels, but I don’t see it as a worthy purchase.

  8. Gunder says...

From the article on the engines:
“The likes of Euphoria and DMM are groundbreaking and we couldn’t copy them. What we did was try to look at the concept and idea behind it and get as close as we could. The ragdolls in the Wii version are robust, they look really good.”

So, no, Euphoria and DMM aren’t in the Wii version, and Havok is implicitly in. That was my guess anyway as Havok’s been around for ages.

Jeez, who cares about physics? If the Wii development team spends more time on fun while the 360/PS3 team spends their time on physics, then I know what I’ll be buying. I play video games to have fun. Wielding a lightsaber is fun. Realistic particles flying through the air is irrelevant to me. Anyway, if the 360/PS3 version is more than $50 then Lucasarts has already made my mind up for me.

I’m sure there will be physics a’plenty on the Wii version, just not with the same engines. I doubt the difference in physics will be noticeable compared to the graphical differences. Even the best physics and A.I have yet to impress me beyond what I’ve seen on games 3-4 years ago. Most of the real leaps have been graphical so I wouldn’t even bother to worry about the physics on this game just yet.

i thought the physics were pretty killer:

    there’s a few videos there…

yeah, i care about physics and pretty particals and AI. this type of ai/environ interaction will be all over the future of gaming!

This is good news. Especially since one minute ago I was pretty upset about how third parties keep giving the Wii the shaft. (What else is new for Wii owners).

Seriously, the lifeblood of my Gamecube was some great third party exclusives. I don’t even see very many of those for the Wii.

I’ll be happy when I pick up the game, and don’t feel shafted ^^

  15. Io says...

No screen shots? No interest. Let me see what they are doing to ensure this title does not look just like the PS2 and PSP version, then I’ll be interested.

This is another game where I’m going to have to play to see what I think.

  17. Myst says...

Five exclusive levels does not mean more levels, they say that the story veers of which could simply mean you explore other places, it might even mean the game is shorter then the other versions.

  18. Clonester says...

I don’t think anyone is EXPECTING this to be a great game (it may or may not). It’s just nice that third parties are not screwing Nintendo Wii owners for a change. Civilization Wii (RIP) on the other hand…

  19. wii wii says...

The Force is with this game, young Infendoians…
But it is not a Jedi, yet.
