Manhunt 2 rated M

Friday, August 24th, 2007 at 6:41pm by Jake

Manhunt2logoEarlier today the ESRB gave Rockstar’s controversial Manhunt 2 a “M for mature. This announcement follows the debated July rating of AO. It is unclear at this time if Rockstar has toned the game down from it’s extremely violent state, or if the publics complaining caused the ESRB to give Manhunt 2 a second look. Either way, both Nintendo and Sony will now allow the title to be published for their respected consoles. Here is what Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar games, had to say about today’s announcement.

“Manhunt 2 is important to us, and we’re glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience. We love the horror genre. Manhunt 2 is a powerful piece of interactive story telling that is a unique video game experience. We think horror fans will love it.”

Manhunt 2 ships to the PS2, PSP, and Wii October 31st. The title contains the following content: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs.

UPDATE: Apparently Rockstar Games did edit violence in Manhunt 2, but how much editing is still unknown.

Hey, Jake, it’s great to see some new writers on Infendo, but can you maybe work on how you post stuff? The writing is great, but you always seem to screw up the formatting. Like they usually have a blank space at the beginning, or the font is wrong (like this post).

Also, you indent on new paragraphs, and you should stop doing that. It makes the post look wierd.

That’s all, keep up the good work.

This announcement follows the submission of a modified version of Manhunt 2 to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), who has now rated the title “M” for Mature for ages 17 and older.

Does this not sound as if the game has been censored? It is sad to see the game being censored because the wrong people found it offensive and not because there is any evidence that it could be harmful, but that’s what it looks like

That’s great although I’ve lost some interest in it.

Sorry…It’s this dumb auto formating. I haven’t couldn’t fix anything yet because I had to head out. Again sorry for the trouble.

Whatever the case may be, I knew that the “A.O.” rating wouldn’t stand for too long. No matter if Rockstar toned the content down or not, the end result will be the same– This game is going to be bought by a lot of gamers just to spite the folks who tried to silence its birth.

Any word from the BBFC yet?

It was all an advertising campaign.

If I recall correctly Nintendo`s (and Sony’s) decision not to allow Manhunt 2 on their platforms as long as it was adults only was praised on this very blog. Are you happy now that there is a crippled version or do you hate mature games in general?

Though I am still excited for this game to release, I am significantly less excited to get a watered down version. I have been itching for a good new horror game to play…probably the funnier thing is that this now coincides with the release of Dementium: the Ward, a pretty strong looking horror title for the DS. Anyways though, I wish they would have simply appealed the original, and maybe gave the UK the watered down one, Americans love violence.

I wish i could have somehow been able to actually play, and see for MYSELF, the differences in both the version that has been allowed and the one that was banned.
I bet it is not a big deal at all in terems of game content and game play.
I am glad that this game is now good to go, Nintendo needs a great selection of games, even if I may not pick them all up

I have a really good feeling that nothing was changed. This seems so convenient, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a publicity stunt.

I think Rockstar should put more energy into innovative games and advertising them as such than pushing sales just by: ” Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs”.

Maybe it’s just me but covering movies or games in blood, gore, violence & “sex” just makes me think of an old piece of meat covered with enough ketchup to disguise the foul taste.

And Rockstar is quite deliberatly playing the AdultOnly / Mature card for PR reasons, pulling the minors to the “forbidden fruit” that always tastes better just because it’s 18+ and “extreme”.

For me their games are just a waste of good game developers…

I think you mean “respective”, not respected.

    Otherwise, good write-up.
