Intro: Mario Super Sluggers

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 at 6:30am by Will

Just like all the previous Mario sports titles once a year all the characters in the series get together for some non-canon fun. All without worry of some bothersome kidnapping from Bowser or the ever so sly, smelly, scheme of Wario. I have to honestly say that I have never really been a fan of any of the sports titles. They just do not do anything for me, and after watching the introduction to Super Sluggers, I kind of feel depressed. After seeing a few WiiMotes turn into bats, and Nunchucks become balls, I don’t think I can be serious about this game. Maybe it’s just me and my standards for a Mario game, but I would like to know how you feel about the Mario sports titles? Also, is anyone planning to pick this up on the 25th?

Sorry to disagree, but I think that the Mario sports games are the best (most fun) sports games out there, and this one will hopefully continue that tradition. 1st party games are the best games for the Wii, Mario based games are the best games for the Wii, 1st party games make the best use of the Wii controller - put all these elements together and I’m sure this is going to be one awesome game. I won’t be picking it up on launch day, but I’m sure I’ll be getting it soon (possibly as a Christmas present for my son).

I’m considering picking this game up over the holidays. I’m not a simulation sports fan, but I think the cartoony gameplay will be fun.

The only Mario sports titles that I ever liked were the Tennis games, everything else was just lame in comparison. However, I can’t wait to see a Football type Mario game.

This game looks WAY fun to me! Don’t knock it till you try it. Why play regular baseball when you can play baseball with shells, fireballs, and bananas? It makes me happy just thinking about it.

They’ve also got a fun little promotional card trading game going here:

    Okay, okay, okay,

Did Donkey just smack the CRAP out of Luigi there?

And Yoshi jumping away from a huge explosion?

You have to admit those are fine moments.

I can’t hate on Mario sports games that much because Mario Tennis on the N64 was one of the most fun games I ever played. AND I learned how to play tennis from it! How to hit, where to hit, where to stand, don’t be in no-man’s-land, what types of shots to do when, when to approach and volley, how to keep score… I mean, I signed up for a tennis class that next summer and the instructors were really impressed with me.

They said, “How do you already know all this stuff about tennis? How do you know how to play?”

I just told them Mario Tennis.

So the mushrooms that make people grow, the giant pipes that warp people across great distances, and the transgendered, egg-spitting dinosaur all went under your radar as serious business, but the notion of a Wiimote turning into a baseball bat is the thing that finally breaks your suspension of disbelief? Really?

Seriously, Mario Superstar Baseball was one of the best games on the ‘cube, with its RPG mode, tons of mini-games that were actually fun and overall excellent gameplay mechanics. I’d recommend putting aside your distaste for the notion that Bowser and Mario could actually play a baseball game together aside and giving this one a try, it’ll likely be similarly excellent.
