Infendo reader: ‘I’m in love with Endless Ocean’

Infendo reader Shivy writes: “Hey Infendo. I am in love with Endless Ocean. Playing it brings back fond memories of other games that focused on exploration and discovery, such as Myst and Uru.
“One of the most impressive parts of the game was being able to go diving with a good friend of mine. We explored an undersea ruin together. The Wii’s limitations in communication (pre-set phrases and hand signals between the divers) actually made the experience feel more authentic, since divers wouldn’t normally be able to communicate through speech anyway.
“I can’t speak praises of this game enough. It has easily become one of my favorite game experiences in recent years.”

If the shark had a laser on its head, I would definitely buy this!

The game seriously rocks… and is massively relaxing to boot.

a long long time ago (1990ish) I had a magnavox computer. It was one of the first with a cd rom drive and was therefore SWEET. It came with some great games. One in particular stood out. It was this crazy world that you could explore, myst style. You would interact with characters and travel around and get lost and find yourself again. I never ever found an objective in it. I did find rabbits having (and offering me) tea, dragons, sewers with gondolas, secret passages, and many other amazing things. It made no sense but was 100% awesome.
I haven’t played this diving game, but this exploration is a GREAT idea for the wii. I would love to play crazy exploration games like that. Nothing as serious as myst. But something with secrets and characters and, of course, crazy minigames that you find by accident. Things that make you say to you friends- hey! did you realize that feeding the dragon the pea pod it will do such and such and yada yada yada…
Yeah, there are games like this. Oblivian for instance has great exploration, and Mass effect has the characters and conversation. But they are all a little more intense than I have in mind. This diving game is closer to what I’d want to play, sitting back, waving my arms around with a silly grin on my face, just like when I was a kid.

I really like Endless Ocean too, but there are a few things that annoy me.
- Why oh why is there no play list feature or at least the possibility to change track? Most of the music on the SD card in my Wii consists of 3-5 minutes long songs, after the 5th or so loop it is driving me insane! I know I can stitch together MP3’s so they become one file, but it really shouldn’t be necessary.
- The sound of the water scooter when it’s leaving the boat is very lifeless and doesn’t fade properly.
- The graphics above water is very jagged but underwater it’s fabulous.

I recommend to play the fourth track from “En Attendant Cousteau” by Jean-Michelle Jarre while playing Endless Ocean. It is a 45-minute or so single track that imitates ambient underwater sounds musically in a very calming way without beats or voices. It blends perfectly with this game!
I like the game also, but I do find everything that happens above water annoying. Once you dive in, it is really awesome!

This game looks to be a GREAT way for me to enjoy gaming without all the action and gunplay of games like Halo 3, GOW and COD4. I love those above games to death, but it IS nice to see a different type of game, a nice change of pace I guess is how to put it.
I will rent this game at some time, maybe even buy it used…

Heh, so there are great whites in the game. Regardless, this game I would like to get for myself, but I have enough anyway (NMH and upcoming SSBB) to keep me interested.

It is really, really a nice game. It’s not -just- exploration, there does seem to be a little bit of a plot there and mysteries to uncover, but it’s really laid back. And there’s no experience quite like befriending a fish and getting followed by it for an entire dive….

This game is really great…It’s the only game my mother actually likes since the original Pac-Man.

This game has been taking a backseat to No More Heroes. I should get back to playing it.
