Early NiGHTS reviews are promising - UPDATE
Tuesday, December 18th, 2007 at 2:12pm by BlakeNintendo Power (Jan. 2008) gave the game a 9 out of 10, saying “Director Takashi Iizuka and his team have hit one of out the park, delivering a follow-up in every way worthy of its legendary predecessor.” EGM scores (Jan. 2008) were lower at 7, 7.5, and 7 out of 10, but all three editors lauded the lush visuals, symphonic soundtrack, and good voice acting while saying the game plays much better with a Wavebird than Wiimote.
UPDATE: Another one: “While not the Mario-class game that the original was in 1996, Nights: Journey of Dreams’ levels are inspired, entertaining, and the camera tricks are amazing… as a whole, Journey of Dreams is a great adventure that will take you to a world you won’t want to leave,” provided you ditch the Wiimote and tune-out the atrocious dialog.

FUDGE YEAH. NiGHTS.
December 13th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
Yes! chao raising from SA2 with a nights makeover.
December 13th, 2007 at 8:30 pm
I’m definitely picking this up eventually. I’m not a bit surprised by what EGM said. EGM sucks.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
EGM sucks because they said it was a good-but-not-great game? Man I can only imagine if you were an Assassin’s Creed fanboy.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
I rarely agree with EGM. You have a problem with that?
December 13th, 2007 at 11:37 pm
“Anyone else as excited for this as I am?”
Do you even have to ask?! Of course man! I’ve been waiting for this since I NiGHTS into Dreams came out on Sega Saturn!! And if ‘even’ 1up can say it feels true to the original…I’m definitely going to buy it! ^_^
December 13th, 2007 at 11:37 pm
No, it was just the way you worded your post that made it seem like it reeked of fanboy-ism.

The term “it’s a good game, just not a great game” is the mating call for pretentious critics. It also works well for pretentious film critics; “it’s a good movie, just not a great movie.” It completely allows them to have it both ways with a review, and to still come off like they know something about the medium that we don’t. tools.

Riiight. It’s relating that something had potential to be better than it was. I guess you could say that for anything that isn’t a ten, but it makes more sense to say it for something that didn’t exactly live up to its hype as opposed to something that was relatively unknown and proved to be pretty good. It’s not like they’re saying a game isn’t worthy of your time or money, they just didn’t think it was superb or anything. I don’t see how that’s pretentious. :\

I have to admit, having never played a previous NiGHTS game, I’m not getting that excited about this.
I think I might leave this off my pre-order list and wait to see what the word of mouth is.
December 14th, 2007 at 5:19 am
I don’t want to spoil the fun, but be prepared to be sooo dissapointed in this game. That’s all I have to say.
December 14th, 2007 at 8:31 am
i hope you guys pre-ordered this! I did and got a free Promo NiGHTS Making Of DVD… awesomesauce!

7, 7.5. 7 are considered GOOD scores according to EGM. I think this game is going to be very mix. Those people who loved the original and want a proper sequel will love it and those who feel the game didn’t change or evolve the franchise.
December 14th, 2007 at 10:49 am
Yeah, I’m not interested in this at all. I may rent it to give it a try, but even then, it’s waaaaay far down my list. My list, that is.
December 14th, 2007 at 10:51 am
i don’t know, i’m reading some pretty harsh impressions on the neogaf forums from two hardcore NiGHTS fans. Hopefully they are wrong… I’m buying it anyway!@!! Remember, the first title was extremely polarizing.
December 14th, 2007 at 11:31 am
“Remember, the first title was extremely polarizing.”
By the 130 people who played it.
I kid, I kid. But I think Sega might have been kidding themselves in thinking this was a hot franchise they’ve been neglecting.
December 16th, 2007 at 5:14 pm
I’ve played the Japanese version. I’ve never was so dissapointed in a game as NiGHTS. It had me pulling out my hair after 1,5 hours. I really consider myself a hero for playing this piece of shite for this large amount of time.
THIS IS ONE BAD GAME. (no kidding)
December 19th, 2007 at 4:40 pm
I just desperately hope that the controls aren’t anything like Mario’s swimming levels. In an otherwise perfect game, the swimming is flat out broken. An entire game based around 3D navigation like that would be excruciating.
December 19th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
IGN give it a 6.5 which I find a very high score for this piece of crap
