Comment of the week: Wii satisfaction

Lord Toker, on if Wii hit a homerun or if Microsoft and Sony vulnerabilities make Nintendo look better than it really is.
“Just because Sony and Microsoft are having problems doesn’t mean the Wii wouldn’t have been a success. I’d say Nintendo hit a triple in the opening inning and never stopped scoring. It’s a fun machine that uses a new perspective to give most gamers a new and welcome experience. Sure, it’s technically graphically inferior, but it delivers fun, fun, fun… when you don’t buy shovelware.
“Just like last generation, there was plenty of crap to be found on the dominant system [PlayStation 2], but I don’t base judgment on crap I don’t buy. Nintendo had the right strategy all along by keeping things simple and sweet. I do love my Xbox 360, just not the same. It’s kinda like the grandparents you don’t visit as much.”

how can it be technically inferior? what are we talking about here? its user interface is light years more advanced than what MS or sony are offering. as a total package, technically its probably a wash. some very dumb people undermine how impressive a tech the wiimote is. pushing polygons is more impressive than the wiimote?? i think not.

“I don’t base judgement on crap I don’t buy.”
If only more of the media would feel that way.

And even when you visit those grandparents you see much…they’re playing games on the Wii

you DON’T see much…

I have 21 Wii games not including WiiWare and VC games. I told myself I’m not buying anymore until I finish up some of these. I know some people are complaining about the quality of Wii titles, but for me that’s not an issue. Too many games, too little time.

“I do love my Xbox 360, just not the same. It’s kinda like the grandparents you don’t visit as much.”
I feel the exact opposite, actually. I didn’t think I would initially, but I do. And I am fine with that, really.
I love the Wii’s POTENTIAL. I love some of the first party titles such as Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart and Zelda. But that is it, really. I don’t enjoy the waggleinfested ports, remakes and shity party games which make the majority of the rest of the library.
I think, no, I HOPE, a few upcoming 3rd party titles change this scenario for me, but I have a great system to play if it doesn’t pan out.
So the Wii gathers dust as I play my library of first and third party 360 games both alone and online with friends. I download dozens of game demos, HD game trailers, arcade demos and even watch some HD Movies instead of renting them at a store. I chat with friends on my friend list, don’t have to screw around with all those annoying friend codes on every game, and enjoy watching the weekly streaming videos on upcoming games and events from X-box magazine, Major Nelson and all the others. Hell, I even played game demos that were on the E3 showfloor this year the day before, right at home.
I think with the 360 price drop, more and more people will see how good the system really is when partnered with a Wii. How both systems, a Wii AND a 360, combined create the best video game experience you can ever have. Some might like the Wii more than the PS3 or 360, but COMBINE a Wii and a 360 or a PS3 and it is gamers heaven!
Honestly, I wait for the Wii2, and hope it takes some of the 360 and Ps3 ideas while stating true to its POTENTIAL of the first Wii. I am dissapointed with the state of the Wii, but still like it.
I don’t care which company is making more money. Which company has higher stocks. Which company is selling more in North America, witch in Asia. My small amount of stocks in Nintendo wont make me a rich or poor man in either case.
All I care about is how much FUN I have with a console I buy. And the 360 is giving me more entertainment than my Wii.
But I DO enjoy both.

you can only have so much fun on a 360 until it breaks down on you. I have now seen 2 360 kiosks at best buy unplayable due to the red ring of death.

But they stated earlier you can get it fixed for free in about 2 weeks, that and the newer models are supposed to be fixed as well, if I heard correctly.
Honestly, Wii-Wii has a point. Combine both a Wii and the Xbox 360, and you have a wonderfully well-rounded gaming experience, for the best price. Of course, you can substitute the Xbox for PS3, but so far, a lot of PS3’s games that should have been exclusive (GTA4) haven’t been, and I think that has hurt Sony a lot more than they anticipated. Sure, there are some exclusives, but it seems like they are all of the same genre, and not varied enough to pull in more people to buy even it’s price reduced console.
Having a great variation in a game library is a big factor, I think, when it comes to deciding between Xbox and PS3. And while PS3 is indeed fresh to the market compared to Xbox, it seemed like Sony was very underprepared for big selling games for too long, and many people have bought the Xbox to have their shooters, adventure, RPGs, and stategies.
However, I am hoping they get their game-face on, and fix what needs to be fixed, and start shelling out the franchises that the PlayStation made legend…. but only time will tell, and until then, Microsoft will be the mistress fullfilling the gamer’s urges.

Well said

Great feature Blake. Great post by Lord Toker!
Really why worry about stuff your not going to buy? Labels are not stopping certain games from being made. Publisher like money but we all know the blue ocean gamers didn’t even like gaming before the Wii. Those guys are harder to sell to than people think.
I mean most shovel ware stay at the bottom unless it is accidentally fun.

and here i thought no one liked me
i’m really glad people understood what i meant. i truly do like my x360; i just like my wii more and i’m very happy with it. if you choose wisely from both platforms then you will have everything, except a beer, you need to keep you busy.
