CoD producer: Wii version of World at War is “same game” as PS3, 360 version

Monday, June 23rd, 2008 at 1:01am by Derek

treyarchupdate.jpgTreyarch senior producer Noah Heller revealed details about the Wii version of Call of Duty: World at War in an interview with VideoGamer.com at the game’s official London unveiling.

In good news for Wii aficionados frustrated by weak development efforts, Heller confirmed the Wii version will have a co-op mode, support multiplayer and utilize the Wii Zapper peripheral.

Perhaps most encouragingly, though, he actually seemed to give a crap about the Wii version. Said an enthusiastic Heller:

“(World at War) is going to look better than any Wii game I’ve ever seen on the market. … For all intents and purposes, it’s the same game (as the ‘next-gen’ version). It will easily be the best shooter on the Wii.”

As reported on Infendo earlier this month, Treyarch is developing the Wii version of World at War on-site using a ported version of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine.

Sounds promising. First The Conduit, now Call of Duty: World at War…could the potential for Wii shooters finally be realized?

hm… I think I’ll reserve the right to be skeptical until I see it in action.

This is great news, if the COD4 engine can be ported to the Wii why IW didnt make a COD4 Wii version of the game when they’re is a DS version..

Anyway I see lots of potentials in COD5 after watching the 10 second of video clip, but a game with flame throwers and katana/swords fights brings my expectations pretty high.

Sniper climbs palm tree a guy spots him lights up a match aims flame thrower ..and pufff …yay

I just decided to sell Medal of Honor 2 Heroes. It has excellent controls, but terrible everything else. Although I’m dissapointed that the new cod is a WW2 game, the COD4 engine excites me, and if the controls are as good as MOHH2, then it’ll be fantastic. …assuming the AI is decent.

I like the sound of all this but I too will wait til I see some proof. The phrase “all intents and purposes” leaves a LOT of wiggle room.

    We’ll see.

The terrible horrifying prospect is that in this one particular case, with this one particular developer, and one particular game trying to live up to Infinity Ward’s classics, and despite every reason why it shouldn’t, there’s every possibility that Treyarch’s ‘efforts’ on Wii could genuinely ‘bring the other versions down’ as the fanbois like to imply. The Wii version will be as good as the others because all versions will be unjustifiably crapiffied to the same base level. I just know that somehow we’ll get the blame for this.

    I agree with Soup.

Although hoping for the best possible end result, I’ll wait to believe any claims that CoD:WaW is “the same game” until it is actually released and reviewed.

This is good news to hear them so positive, though i wonder what the comments will really mean. The game certainly wont look the same, and I always understood that, beyond graphics, reasonable AI just sucks up a system’s power. Maybe, since COD is so scripted and linear, this wont matter as much though? I really am wating for the wii to fulfill it’s promise of an amazing fps. Not looking for graphics (conduit looks a cut below project snowblind to me), just a great experience of interaction and smart enemies. Let’s see it guys. I’m worried that the wii will end up like the DS, tons of crap fps, a few competent shooters, but nothing that really plants a flag the way Goldeneye and CS did for me.

    meanwhile, everyone praises halo3. blehhhhhhhhh.

and oh pleeeeze release that black wii you see in the pic!!!!

Great. The Wii finally gets some more third-party love. I just hope they don’t gimmick this thing with motion controls.

This is good news, I wonder how the motion control will work out? I hope they don’t just have that sh!t Wii Zapper as the only way to play using motion control.

Now I will have to watch this game. If it actually turns out well, I may have to get it for the Wii instead of for the 360. Assuming online will be decent and the visuals will be as good as they say it will be…

Nice to see a potentially few GOOD FPS on the Wii coming!
