Boogie gets review of 80, 30 on the same day

Without having played the game, this is looking like it could be another Excite Truck in terms of widely varying review scores. I’m actually laughing inside. Not a creepy Dr. Evil laugh; just a little chuckle.

I’m not at all surprised on 1up’s score. They usually rate Wii games excruciatingly low.

  2. infendoite says...

    1 up sucks ass

  3. vakerorokero says...

1up hates the Wii, Listen to their E3 podcast and they talked 35 minutes of Microsoft, 7 about Nintendo, and 43 dedicated to Sony. Why do they even bother reviewing the games if they hate it? oh yeah, its their job.

  4. KLind says...

If anyone was expecting any fun with Boogie, you are daft. From what I got to play it was mindless shaking of the Wiimote, and everytime I tried to sing it was All over the place like I was doing it wrong, which in fact I wasn’t.

Also, don’t hate 1up. They offer an honest view of things. They say the Wii doesn’t have games, which is right. They say the E3 Press Conference sucked, which it absolutely did. Nintendo showed us that this fall is going to have some great titles from them, but after that nothing. After hearing that Nintendo isn’t currently planning another Zelda game, one thing is apparent. Nintendo has stopped caring for the Hardcore.

Why hate on 1up for telling the truth. Maybe I should stop checking Infendo if everything is all propaganda fanboy stuff. Sure you guys might love Nintendo (and so do I) but if you think all is fine and dandy with them, you must be blind.

What gets me are the negative reviews for games that are meant to be played with others. People complained about Mario Party being lame to play by yourself, too .. It’s like saying Pictionary is a bad game because playing it by yourself isn’t very fun.

  7. exolstice says...

People are also complaining that Mario Party 8 is lame when playing it in a group. Let’s face it, Nintendo can’t always strike gold.

  8. HylianTom says...

Those 7 minutes concerning the Wii on each podcast are typically dripping with a thick derisive/nasty tone, where the crew often uses poor third-party efforts as convenient excuses to troll the console as a whole. So I can see where vakerorokero is coming from.
    {1up claims to cover the broad industry of “video gaming,” but they might as well hang a preschooler’s “girlz-not-allowed”-style sign outside of the treehouse window proclaiming “extreme leet Hardcore gamerz only.”}

But then again, I’ll be fair to the Ziff Davis crew and note that Boogie didn’t exactly have me (or many others) brimming with anticipation or confidence.. so 1up’s assessment of the game might have a few valid points. The ‘30′ is going to be the star of this review, when sadly (happily?) the reviewer’s words will be overlooked.

Another case of a Wii game garnering wildly variant review scores - I think this is something we’re going to see throughout the generation. Reading multiple reviews, trying/renting the game for oneself, and watching videos will be the safer route.

    KLind:

I don’t know what you’re talking about: Wii most certainly does have some great games. More than PS3, anyway.

And also, the new Wii Zelda has been in development for a little over the year now, and will probably be out but 2009 at the very latest. So F-off, buddy.

  10. KillerHeroes says...

Don’t trust 1up and their hardcore judgmental mentality for everything Nintendo. Call me a fanboy, but they really do seem to have a grudge against Nintendo for what they see as Nintendo “abandoning” them.

  11. Hunter says...

    KLind

You seem to fall into a category of people who really only like Nintendo for Zelda. Then whenever they see a press conference that does not unveil a new Zelda it is a failure and they are turning their backs on the hardcore. The fact is they are working on Battalion Wars 2, Metroid, Mario and Smash bros. Next year will see a new Mario Kart and god knows what else. Just because they were not ready to take the lid off of something at a crappy reduced E3 does not mean there is nothing in the works. Also in defense of 1up they later did a 1up yours that had more time for Nintendo and was decidedly more positive.

Boogie is going to be a real mileage may vary game and probably better suited to an inexperienced audience. I think that 1up writes for a specific audience of experience and the review stands. I don’t think they hate the Wii or are a bad group of reviewers. Have I disagreed with some of their reviews? Sure, but the same could be said of any review be it movie game or whatever. I enjoy SSX Blur I am not going to tell them they should change their review. Also they never said that they are not planning another Zelda they are kind of always planning another Zelda/Mario they just take a long time. To be sure the press conference could have been a lot better, but most companies did not show anything for 2008 and focused on this year, a problem with the current state of E3 being late in the year.

I think everyone needs to take a breath enjoy the rest of the year and see what 2008 brings. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Mario Kart await me there.

There are reviews made for and by “hardcore gamers”. And there are reviews for the rest of us. Just choose the review that matches better your gaming tastes.

The fact that, for instance, mario party 8 was the best selling game last month in US tells that the majority of the reviews are made for hardcore gamers, but the majority of gamers right now aren’t hardcore gamers (so, review averages aren’t valid either).

  13. Matthew D. says...

Jenn from 1up hated it because of it’s song list of inappropriate lyrics for a kids game. Also the characters are little girls and they look like sluts.

The game takes out Ass but lets you say don’t you wish your girl friend was raw like me.

Overall all you do is shake the controlling and watch the character dance… so don’t expect a DDR.

  14. KLind says...

Hunter, and Bryan I’m not that kind of dude. I’m simply saying that Nintendo showed us the same 3 Megaton titles they’ve been promising for a while. I’m pumped for them, but what comes after?

Sure they showed Mario Kart, but it seemed the E3 show focused much more on the non-gamer than showing real games. Yes they have cool stuff in the pipeline, but for them not showing it and instead choosing to spend all that time showing how popular they are is why the press conference was not good. Nintendo showed me some games that I already knew I wanted to play. Sony showed me a tons of games I want to play, and I only got a PS2 months ago.

I’m just worried that Nintendo is seeing the success of games like Wii Play, and stuff like that and focusing on making titles like that. It’s not just the interview with Aonuma where they said “nothing is currently planned”. Project Hammer was put on hold for the team to make Mini-games, or casual games. I’m not just a Mario Zelda Metroid kind of guy. I just would like more games, and some reassurance that Nintendo even cares about that anymore.

  15. Hunter says...

    KLind

The thing is why should they not chase what is bringing them success. By giving the CNN guy who got sent to “that E3 thing” as I am sure his higher ups referred to it they get tonnes of coverage and make a profit. The fact is they are having more success by putting top billing on their weirder stuff, but for generations they have been trying to give the existing gamer what they thought they wanted with little gain in market share. If you need reassurance look at the DS it has achieved a healthy balance. Also it looks as though they may have learned a lesson from E3 and they are not doing a presser at all, but rather just having a lot of hands on time with games. I am certain this is to make sure that core gaming media gets time with the games they are interested in while they take the main stream press guy over to Wii fit and the like. Do they care about you? Yes, otherwise they would have canned a lot more games than P. Hammer, which may simply have been canned cause it sucked.

  16. KLind says...

^Look. It doesn’t matter what I want. I think Nintendo’s focusing too much on the non gamer. That’s my opinion. That’s not the issue. It was all due to the 1up hate that even got me thinking about that. I see that bringing up my opinion isn’t smart to do on a Nintendo only blog. Getting comments like “F-off, buddy.” doesn’t really make one want to stay.

I was just saying that 1up wasn’t spewing lies when they said the Nintendo press conference wasn’t up to par with what most gamers wanted.

That’s for speaking logically, but I think I’ll just take my opinion somewhere else.

  17. KLind says...

    ^*Thanks for speaking logically

  18. Hunter says...

Sorry if the community pushed you off KLind. For the record I agree that Nintendo’s press conference was lacking and I was only trying to give you some stuff to look forward to. I was more disappointed that they did not give Battalion Wars some love it is a franchise I am rapidly becoming a fan of. So if I don’t see you round anymore take it easy bud and maybe, my BWii squads will face off against yours some day.

  19. sakuragi says...

Well, i keep saying WTF? when people claims there are no Wii games, i have been playing nonstop since i got my Wii in January, and certainly is the best launche ever, has most amazing games, and the holiday season is gonna be insane. You say you want more? Just wait til those 3 big guns are on the shelves, then Nintendo will start announcing things, why would they want to steal attention from Mario Strikers or Prime 3 for games that will not be out for months? Those are the games that are getting the hype right now.
Think of Nintendo as a moneymaker business, with sales strategies, not as a “hardcore gamer”(those words doesn´t even make sense, is like saying there are hardcore movie watchers) pleasing genie.

  20. Wii Wii says...

What a dichotomy of scores here, is it crap or is it good?. Sure makes it hard to figure out just which score is closer to the truth, doesn’t it.
So how many of you have PLAYED the game? Oh, yeah, that’s right.
How do we know that 1-ups very low score is NOT Justified?
How do we know that gamers very high score IS justified?

Time will tell, but because of reviews like 1-up, I will really take my time thinking about this game, I will see what other gamers think.

  21. ejamer says...

    @KLind
This is meant entirely in kindness, so please don’t take it the wrong way. Rather than a comment about you personally, it is more a general plea for sanity from the soldiers digging trenches in the forums for this new console war…

The reason people might have jumped on your post isn’t because of the different (and perfectly valid) opinions that you hold, but because of how you choose to express those opinions. Taking your first post, and only reading some key parts would give this:

“If anyone was expecting any fun with Boogie, you are daft. …

Also, don’t hate 1up. They offer an honest view of things. They say the Wii doesn’t have games, which is right. … After hearing that Nintendo isn’t currently planning another Zelda game, one thing is apparent. Nintendo has stopped caring for the Hardcore.

… Maybe I should stop checking Infendo if everything is all propaganda fanboy stuff. …”

All of those statements are perfectly valid opinions, but most are stated as if they were immutable facts.
    – While you might have never expected fun from Boogie, many young and casual gamers probably will find the game very enjoyable. Everyone has different tastes, so respect the fact that some people will enjoy even the most mundane games. (I once knew a guy completely addicted to minesweeper. It really does take all types.)
    – Saying that the Wii doesn’t have games is silly. It has lots of games, and some excellent ones too. Saying there are no games that you like is perfectly valid, but stating that there are no good games is either incredibly self-centered or simply incorrect.
    – Um, Nintendo is actually working on another Zelda as we speak… so you seem to have a few facts mixed up. And regarding hardcore games, a number of them being developed specifically for the Wii. The definitive version of Manhunt 2 would’ve been on the Wii if that game didn’t get an AO rating, and more adult games are being developed as time goes on. However, it’s common knowledge that Nintendo has *always* focused on family appeal instead of the hardcore gamer… so arguing that they have abandoned the hardcore audience is a bit silly.
    – After reading such a one-sided post, with a number of statements are either pure judgement calls or flat-out wrong, seeing you accuse this website of being “propaganda fanboy stuff” sounds an awful lot like trolling.

I agree with you that the Wii probably isn’t the best choice for hard-core gamers… But IMO it does have a good selection and mix of game titles right now and many more exciting games in development. I am very happy with my Wii, but still think that the XBox 360 is currently the best “gamer” system (ignoring failure rates) because of its excellent online support and strong library, and that the PS3 has tons of potential if you are willing to invest that much money.

Hopefully you continue to share your opinions in this (and other) forums… but hopefully this post will encourage you and everyone else to think about what they say before posting.

Then again, maybe this is just me overreacting to the occasional fanboys (not talking about KLind or any others here) that sound like a bunch of 6-year olds in a pissing contest. We’ve all seen those posts, right?

To those who didn’t overreact one way or the other, thanks for trying to make the internet a saner place… :)

  22. ejamer says...

Geez… sorry for the rant everyone. :( Now let’s back to actual gaming news please! Catharsis is complete, so if a mod deletes that post then so be it.

    —-

Boogie looks pretty cool to me, but more like a renter than a keeper. My wife will probably love playing it at parties with her friends, but the not-very-deep gameplay wouldn’t keep my attention for long.

As for the rating differential, I guess that really depends on who you play the game with. In the right situation and with the right friends involved, it could be a definite winner… but I bet very few “hardcore” gamers would ever be in that situation.
