Wii Shop Channel Monday – Space Invaders Get Even, Pit Crew Panic, and Metal Slug 2

Monday, December 1st, 2008 at 8:41am by David

Cyber Monday and the weekly Wii Shop Channel Monday collide!  This week:  Space Invaders Get Even and Pit Crew Panic on WiiWare, and Metal Slug 2 for Virtual Console.  My pick is Space Invaders Get Even (only 500 points).  Metal Slug 2 is tempting, but I’d rather get the Anthology already available for Wii.

Full details after the break.

WiiWare

SPACE INVADERS GET EVEN (Taito, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older—Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): The Space Invaders are back, and this time they’re out to get even. Take control of a UFO and make those Earthlings pay by unleashing your fleet of heroic invaders against their puny tanks, fighter jets and artillery—but watch out for the massive boss awaiting you at the end of each stage. Use your invaders’ five attack types and the might of the mother ship to rack up high scores, then upload them via Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection and see where you stand in the global rankings. (Note: Router and broadband access required for online play. For more info, visit www.nintendo.com.)

Pit Crew Panic! (Hudson Entertainment, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Pit Crew Panic! is a frantic, action-packed game that unfolds on the racing circuit. During the game, the pit crew is not only faced with repairing vehicles, but also various WHATSITs. Handling the WHATSIT repairs is a pit crew made up of legendary beauties. The controls are simple: Just grab a member of the crew with the Wii Remote controller’s A Button, then release the button when the Pointer is over the damaged PART, and that crew member will begin repairs. Assign repairs to the members of your team and provide support using the Wii Remote to send a fully repaired WHATSIT out of the pit as quickly as you can. The game features Normal mode, which can be played using one of two rules: Abnormal mode (players split into two teams and compete against each other) and Ranking mode (compete with players around the world for the top record). Each mode can be played with a maximum of four Wii Remote controllers, allowing you to team up with friends and family. Your teamwork could lead to outstanding records.

Virtual Console

METAL SLUG 2 (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen—Blood and Gore, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1998 by SNK, METAL SLUG 2 is a side-scrolling military-action game. Players choose from Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio, setting their sights on wiping out Morden’s newly remobilized Rebellion Army. Just like the original METAL SLUG, players blaze a trail by shooting and jumping, but METAL SLUG 2 adds a new arsenal for you to command, including a heavy machine gun, a shotgun and even a laser gun, providing players with rich variety. Battle effects are packed in, as well—players turn into mummies after getting caught in poison gas coughed up by mummies. After picking up too many food items, characters turn fat, but they get an attack-strength upgrade. Two-player action is supported, too, so players can have a blast with their friends.

Space Invaders Get Even looks interesting at the Japanese site: http://www.taito.co.jp/csm/title/2008/si_geteven/ I will not be downloading it though since I have no space in the Wii or SD Card! Too many games, when is the update supposed to come? (The one where you can play directly from SD?) I also need another SD. (4GB?)

Isn’t the point of the virtual console to release games that you can’t play otherwise on the Wii? I love Metal Slug more than I love brownies but what is the point? The Anthology costs about $20 now and you get almost the whole Slug series… this is a silly release.

I’ll probably pick up Space Invaders Get Even, eventhough the full game is about 700 blocks

Pretty blah week. I’m about to give up hope we’ll actually see Castlevania 3 before the end of the year.

To be fair, the Anthology has control issues… As in, you can’t even use the classic controller. Don’t ask me who made that decision, but unfortunately it keeps the collection from being the definitive way to play Metal Slug.

Also, I don’t think the Wii is compatible with SD cards over 2GB…

Poll: Which category do you fall into?

    (1) The “pretending I have a hard drive” approach, where you keep a backup copy of each downloaded game either for instant gratification or because you’re afraid it won’t be available from Nintendo’s servers later.

    (2) The “time to clean the fridge again” approach, where you play through downloadable games and then delete them from your sysem, knowing that you can re-download any previously played game from the Shopping Channel if the urge hits.

I fall into category (2). Both approaches have positives and negatives, I’m not trying to suggest that one is better than the other… but I am curious to know how people are using their systems.

I don’t really buy Wiiware or VC games anymore because I don’t want to deal with the shuffling around and redownloading. It’s a shame that Nintendo has caused people like me to wait before forking over their money. I’m sure they would like to have it now instead of me waiting until they get this update out.

A new twist on Space Invaders seem fun – has that game ever been retooled?

I fall into the category of, I download once. Only once and should be able to index my games in a specific channel. (Something more like a folder on a computer where then you will have NES, SNES, Genesis, etc games inside that one channel.) It may be something that Nintendo should look into. Open the NES channel you will get your NES games that you have downloaded, etc… Just make it simple. I am sick of shuffling around from the Wii to the SD Card just to try and make space to download a new game. No more downloadable games for me until the storage solution is out!
