Worldwide sales numbers are in and it’s clear that Wii will overtake Xbox 360 next month.  The overall sales are obviously boosted by Japan, who have bought nearly 8 times as many Wii systems as Xbox 360.

Is Wii going to be the PS2 of this generation?

    Amazing. Wii managed to reach those numbers in less than a year what it took the 360 two years to do.

    Actually … at the rate the Wii is selling worldwide, it should pass the 360 in about two weeks!

    By the way, VGChartz is a great place for free weekly data, and it is getting more accurate by the month. Gives you a good idea of what the numbers will be like for NPD monthly.

    Um… I don’t get it.

    The math doesn’t add up.
    10.32M = 42.1%
    10.10M = 42.2%

    Shouldn’t the larger number yield a higher percentage? What am I missing?

    Yea, this really is quite amazing. With the holiday season coming, 3 HUGE titles (and a Fire Emblem game, yay!) along with WiiFit and Mario Kart early next year, I still don’t see an end to Wiis flying off the shelves. They could keep up this torrid pace for months to come.

  5. response to egag21 says...

    10.10M is actually 41.2%

  6. matthew says...

    Halo 3 is still coming.

    Oops. Sorry. I guess my mind is still waking up. Glad its Friday!

    i’m sure the “million” people who preordered halo3 got a 360 a LONG time ago

  9. Derek B. says...

    I’m with Jared on this one.

    I think the markets for Halo III and Gears of War have extensive overlap…let alone the other big 360 titles that have come out. I find it hard to believe that dedicated Halo fans have waited two years to buy their 360 units. They probably bought their consoles a while ago to play games like Gears of War and Lost Planet while waiting for the new Halo.

    That being said…and I think the logic is fair…I don’t think that Halo III will be as huge a system seller as people think. Nintendo is in a much better position to sell Wii units in Q3/Q4 with Metroid Prime: Corruption, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Mario Galaxy.

    Halo 3 will be bought by people who already own an Xbox 360. Jared gets a cookie :-)

    And P.S. — the Wii won’t be the PS2 of this generation. The Wii will be the Wii of this generation. Apples and oranges.

    While I agree there is ample overlap between Gears and Halo fans, I’m betting Microsoft will sell a lot of 360s next month, though not as many as they hope.

    Don’t forget Halo 3, maybe with that Xbox rise its sales, but I don’t think that surpasses Nintendo.

    ROFLCOPTER at fun with mathematics (and percent). *LOL* The numbers are just plain wrong.

    Also isn’t September when there’s a system seller launching for Xbox 360?

  14. Billman64 says...

    The PS2 was the Wii of last generation :)

    Actually that’s not accurate. The last “Wii”-like sales boom was the NES in the 80’s.

    Apples and oranges it is.

    I agree, Wii being the cheaper and in my opinion the more accessible of the three consoles (if you can get one) will see steady if not greater sales with the new games coming out. It generally always seems it takes 8 months to a year for the really kick ass games to come out for these new systems, and thats when they really take off. The DS is a prime example of this. The ravenous Halo fanboys have had their 360’s for 2 years now and yes a few 360’s may sell, but i do not think Halo 3 will push sales so much that they will pass this tsunami of momentum that Nintendo has. Finally the savior of video gaming has its throne again

    “Halo 3 will be bought by people who already own an Xbox 360.”

    Not so fast, people!!

    I’m one of many Halo fans that have NOT bought a 360 because all we want to play on it is Halo 3!

    So, we will indeed boost those 360 sales next month….

    (Although, with Metroid Prime 3 and a tight budget, I might have to wait ’till next year for mine!!)

    :(

    Oh, and I think it is supremely hilarious that one of the advertisements popping up in Infendo is about getting a FREE Xbox 360 (just click there!)…

    ;)

    Go Wii Go !
    Ha It is amazing that it is so close already. After all the 360 has been out for over a year LONGER han the Wii.

    Still with Halo 3 and a lot of other good titles and an X-box 360 price drop, the Wii may not gain enough ground to pass the 360 for a few more months, but it IS comming. And it came so SOON. that is the big deal here.

  20. Abras says...

    @InvisibleMan

    Well, that may be, but who’s gonna listen to someone with a name like that?

  21. waltermh says...

    i dont doubt that halo will sell some systems, but i do think that if you only buy a console for halo you need your head checked, you need to open your eyes and play better fps, why limit yourself to that one fps as if you never played another fps in your life. try UT 2004, quake 3/4, HL2
    all great fps each in their own way, there is also tribe wars?, a few other oddball but good fps out there, halo is the bottom of the barrel.

    and yes, i also believe that most halo fans do like xbox in general also and played more then just halo 2/1 last gen and therefore will have bought an xbox by now. otherwise its like saying halo fans dont like games if they arent halo. its ignoring every other game that came out on 360 before halo all in or near the same genre that such gamers would also want to play. the overlap should be large enough that while halo will sell systems, it wont be nearly enough impact to reach the system selling status of the big 3 nintendo games coming out this holiday season that did not have equivalent type games come out before them.

  22. HylianTom says...

    I’m crossing my fingers in hopes that the Wii will continue to outsell both the 360 and PS3 combined, even after their price drops.

    The Wii isn’t competing for publisher attention with *only the 360* or *only the PS3* – developers & publishers are having to choose between making a bi-platform game for the PS360 combined userbase.. or making an exclusive for the Wii. If the Wii continues to outsell them both combined, the choice to go with the Wii will become easier and easier..

  23. Pier Paolo says...

    Well, really amazing! I agree with you. Wii is gonna be the Ps2 of this generation but they have to push the trend for the next-generations too!

  24. Satiated says...

    Any charts for software sales? The only Wii game really worth buying/paying for was the game that came with it…

    Out of those 10 million Wiis and 10 million 360s – I’m guessing (conservatively), what 20 million Wii games sold compared to 50+ million 360 games sold?

  25. InvisibleMan says...

    @Abra,

    Huh?!?
