The official NPD sales data has just rolled in bearing with it some unsurprising numbers. The Nintendo Wii has now been declared the numero uno home console in the United States in just 20 months. Quite a feat if you ask me. The real question is…was it the lackluster software pushing hardware, or cheap plastic peripherals?

After 20 Months, NPD Data Shows Wii Emerges as the No. 1 U.S. Home Console
Equaling its status on a worldwide basis, Wiiâ„¢ has become the best-selling video game console in the United States. According to independent sales tracking information from the NPD Group, more than 666,000 Wii consoles sold for the month of June, and nearly 10.9 million Wii consoles have been sold in the United States in the 20 months following its November 2006 launch. The system is credited with breaking down the psychological barriers between gamers and non-gamers.
“Wii was created with the goal of expanding the gaming universe through its intuitive motion-sensing controller,†said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “As we have demonstrated this week during the E3 Media & Business Summit, Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another.â€
The portable Nintendo DSâ„¢ finished as the top-selling U.S. video game system in June, with more than 783,000 units sold. To date, more than 20.8 million Nintendo DS units have been sold in the United States.
The report also shows that six out of the top 10 best-selling games for June are made for Nintendo systems, including Guitar Hero® On Tour (No. 2), Wii Fit™ (No. 4), Wii Play™ (No. 5), Mario Kart® Wii (No. 6), LEGO® Indiana Jones™: The Original Adventures for Wii (No. 7) and LEGO® Indiana Jones™: The Original Adventures for Nintendo DS (No. 9).

Holy Shit 666,000 in JUNE?! in JUNE?! Is that a record?
It’s true when they say evil prevails, but I never thought evil would be so in-your-face as 666 hundred thousand units.

An you guys start actually linking to the ACTUAL press releases, instead of merely quotes. When taking information from anywhere, you should be putting links to original articles and information.
The devil has begun to claim our souls
fes: you do realize Infendo is a pretty large site now which means these developers start sending us direct press releases. We always try to do our best to get sources for our work, but this one is hot off the presses. Straight from Dunaway, herself.
Sorry. I guess it’s just something I see from time to time, where sometimes sources aren’t listed. I had no idea it was a Nintendo press release. I thought it might have been an NPD Press release.
Anyway, I found the link on their press release site.

I don’t think it’s seriously a bad number, but that’s my opinion.

Congratz Nintendo.
1st comment:absolutely hilarious!
Wait a second. Wasn’t Wii already #1 in U.S. Last year? I remember reading that it beat 360 sales a long while ago. Does this mean Wii beat PS2 and even the NES?
