Weekend Discussion: Wii U VS Wii VS Xbox One VS PS4

With the holiday season fast approaching, and the imminent launch of the Xbox one and PS4, Nintendo seems to be having a little difficulty separating the Wii U from the original Wii.  To help differentiate the Wii U from the Wii, Nintendo released a chart comparing the two (See the chart after the jump).  Now that the Wii U has been out for over a year, I feel that Nintendo should forget about the predecessor and focus solely on the Wii U, however the original Wii seems to constantly rear its ugly head.  Now, to me at least, it seems tat Nintendo would benefit form discontinuing the Wii completely, and focus solely on the Wii U and the 3DS/2DS.  Instead, they decided to release the Wii Mini here in the US (Which is a pretty magnificent little beast by the way).

Although unintentional, there is still too much confusion about the Wii VS the Wii U, and I believe that the chart will help.  However, I feel that they should have left the Wii off of the chart altogether and compared themselves to the competitors instead, thus showing us the benefits of purchasing a Wii U.  What are your thoughts, is the below chart a good move, or a bad move?  Will it make a difference at all?

I realize that this chart was released before in a similar version, however Nintendo has decided to re-release it for the holiday season.

I agree with your statement that it should be getting compared to the other consoles instead. Yes, this chart has been out before. My question for Nintendo would be – how did that work out for you? So why do it again?

It’s crazy that they do this, yet are still selling the Wii, plus now the Wii mini.

I’d also say many of these comparisons are meaningless. If you need the Wii U explained to you, you aren’t going to know what Miiverse, Nintendo TVii or WiiU Chat are, so it’s not going to have an impact.

With Mario and Link plastered everywhere this holiday season, I think most of those who don’t know that the Wii U is a new console will finally be enlightened. The Wii U fell victim to really poor marketing on Nintendo’s part. However, Nintendo UK is pushing a lot of advertising, as well as the Wii finally being discontinued in Japan and Europe.

So, I think the last wisps of confusion are going to ebb away after the holidays. Surprised the Xbox One doesn’t have this problem, but at the same time, I’m not — that’s what marketing does.

Let’s be honest. The Wii makes them money still whereas the WiiU is still being sold at a loss. No reason not to sell the and make some money to help float the boat. The bigger issue was the mistake of calling it the WiiU instead of the Wii 2 or Super Wii.

As for the checklist. That’s cheap marketing. There is no reason not to do something that costs virtually zero of your marketing budget.

I’m absolutely astounded that Nintendo would release the Wii Mini in the U.S. right now, during a time they’re having real problems selling the Wii U. This move will not help! If anything will help, it’s getting Wii OFF the market (like they’re doing in Japan), and start advertising the Wii U better. In the past week, the Wii U sales went up 1500 percent, so that’s a good sign, BUT Nintendo still needs to make sure Wii U gets up in the U.S. Now, since Nintendo has quite a few big games coming out this holiday season, let’s hope the release of PS4 and XBone don’t totally overshadow it. I bet most parents would see and compare those consoles mostly on a standpoint of price and family friendliness, and through that process, choose Wii U, which is 100 to 200 dollars less than the competition AND has more, readily available games that are not over glorified ports. (MANY of the “launch titles” for PS4 and XBone are just glorified ports of PS3 and 360 games, so if these families already have THOSE consoles, what’s the point of a XBone or PS4?) BUT we’ll see what happens.

I agree with Baelnic, the Wii U name was a big mistake plus combined with poor marketing this is the result.
Xbox One won’t have the same problem because their market is teenagers/adults who are well informed…unlike Nintendo’s market which includes pretty much everybody else since Wii, but they are not that well informed.

  7. baelnic says:

I can see the new Nintendo ads now …

U are not informed. Wii will inform you …

  8. Lou says:

I’m still not convinced this is the result of poor marketing. The Wii wasn’t heavily marketed when it came out, but word of mouth was incredibly strong. I think today’s consumer is very educated.
Let’s make some predictions. I say the sales pick up during the holidays – how could they not? – then fall off again, and Iwata doesn’t survive 2014. Hopefully, neither does Reggie.

  9. BornFlunky says:

Well I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but the Wii was heavily marketed in the US. You would see a “Wii would like to play” commercial on almost any given channel during any hour, for example.

  10. Lou says:

I wouldn’t argue that they didn’t spend more on marketing, but of the people I know that never owned a console before the Wii, that wasn’t the reason they bought one. Remember when people used to have Wii parties? That’s how the majority of people I know were introduced to it. Bowling alone took people by storm. Those same people now see no reason to buy a Wii U.

Look, it’s right in the name. The Wii was a play on “we”, as in everyone is involved.

Now it’s “U”, as in a singular experience. The game pad only works for one person.

So which thing worked better? Nintendo went 180 degrees from what made them successful.

And who needs off-tv play (another singular experience) when so many own some variation of a DS anyway?

  11. Ted Strom says:

    A) The last thing Nintendo needs is for people to compare the Wii U to the next generation systems. The Wii U is an advancement compared to the Wii but isn’t in the same ballpark as the PS4 or Xbox One. It’s not in the same state as the ballpark.

    B) I’d give even odds that the Wii (or Wii mini) is in production longer than the Wii U. The Wii U is going to be cancelled.
