Virtual Console Monday – Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels & Sin and Punishment

sinandpunishmentboxart.jpgThe question as to whether or not the US will ever be able to play non-American released titles via Virtual Console has been answered today … super-answered!

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels – NES
Originally released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2, this game has previously made only brief cameo appearances in the Western Hemisphere. Now available on the Virtual Console in all of its original splendor, Mario fans will appreciate the familiar look and feel of the game, while finding that its updated game play creates an entirely new challenge.

Sin & Punishment – N64
Created by the legendary development studio Treasure, this is a game that hard-core gamers and fans of Japanese imports recognize as one of the finest Nintendo 64 titles to have never previously reached North American shores. Its unique combination of English voice-overs with Japanese subtitles (preserved in this version) has only added to the enthusiasm for its eventual release here. Set in the near future, on an overpopulated Earth starved for resources, players uncover the intriguing mystery of two teenagers (Saki and Airan) and their battle against the Ruffians as they advance through level after level of nonstop action.

It appears that virtually importing games has its extra cost, with the NES title costing 600 points and the N64 game coming in at 1200 points.

What do you think?  Worth it?

Was there any work done to translate these titles? If so, then ABSOLUTELY worth it. Even if not, I’m happy to pay higher amounts for these games. I’ve had 2500 points saved up on my Wii for over a month, and THIS is the monday I’ve been waiting for!

    YES!

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG the REASON for believing in Wii, Sin and Punishment. I forever believed that nintendo does indeed love me and this is proof.

Moments like this is why I believe the VC is a great thing. Getting old games that were available here is ok, and yeah a great way to get old games that were and still are hard to find, but the chance to play the original REAL SMB 2 is awesome. I sort of still don’t like the additonal 100 Wii points because I think they are doing it basically because they can, but I’m going to bite because I really want to play it. I hope they did some translation, and I guess I’ll find out pretty soon because as soon as noon rolls around, I’m downloading it.

I figured this would have come out next month though, because I think November is going to be Mario month with Super Mario Galaxy coming out. I expect to see SMB 3 and Super Mario World 2, and possibly Super Mario All Stars all next month. Maybe even Super Mario RPG.

Eh, I don’t think there’s a chance in hell they’ll release All Stars on VC. Why sell all of the Mario games together for 800 points, when they’re all available separately? It doesn’t make financial sense? The only way they’ll release All Stars is if they sell it for like 1500 points.

I don’t mind paying more for games like these. Nintendo should realize though that while some games are worth more, others are worth less. There are some titles that will not sell well just because it was not a quality title to begin with. By offering special deals on such titles, they could sell more of them (consumers love a bargain) and make more money.

Got to play some S&P, and have to say I will be needing practice on this game to get used to the controls. They are very borked with the Gamecube and Classic Controller. x_x

But I am finally glad to have that puppy in my collection; 10 years waiting.

Yeah I do think that’s a great point, I wouldn’t mind an extra 100 on hard to find or special games, but charging the same minimum is silly. There’s no way Urban Champion should be as much as The Legend of Zelda. Not to mention the VC has screwed up the indie used game market in my area. I used to go pick up several games for $1-$2 and now all of them are at least $5 each. That I don’t care for.
