Virtual Console Monday – Neo-Geo invades Wii

Monday, October 8th, 2007 at 9:33am by David

neogeoconsole.jpgThree new games available from the Wii Shop Channel … and they’re all Neo-Geo titles!  Each game costs 900 Wii Points.

Fatal Fury – Neo-Geo
Released in 1991 and one of the longest-running series in the fighting-game genre, this title introduced players to Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi. Do you have what it takes to win the King of Fighters tournament?

World Heroes – Neo-Geo
A fighting game released in 1992 featuring eight characters, including Hanzo, Janne and Rasputin, modeled on historical figures from throughout the ages. Enjoy the wide range of combat forms as you take on history’s best!

Art Of Fighting – Neo-Geo
This fighting game, released in 1992, began the story of the Sakazaki family and Robert Garcia, further developed in two later sequels. Yuri Sakazaki has been abducted by Mr. Big to punish her father, Takuma, and her brother, Ryo. Can you perfect the art of fighting and save Yuri?

Aching for some Neo-Geo fighting?  Is 900 points a fair price?

It’s rare that 1 on 1 fighting games age gracefully. I’m happy to see a new console hit the VC, but buying 16 year old 2D fighting games for $9 does not appeal to me. Maybe when we get into the King of Fighters games I’ll change my tune.

900 points is definitely a fair price, but not for the initial launch games. I’m holding out for Samurai Showdown and even though I know it will never happen, Bust a Move.

900 is high, but I’m going to blame SNK and Nintendo on this one, and not just Nintendo like I did for the NES imports last week. Just like Halo 3, these titles appeal to a certain type of gamer who will pay a premium for “something special” without thinking twice. SNK’s no fool, saw that potential, and charged Nintendo accordingly. Oh, and don’t worry, Nintendo makes bank on this too. It’s THEIR service, after all.

I may get one of these for the simple fact that I had a snooty friend in high school who actually had a NEO GEO and paid $150 for games. I only pay $9? I win!

@ Jack: That is the best reasoning I’ve seen to get one of these so far!

And I’m not much into fighting games…I enjoy my Smash and my Soul Caliber II, but past that….nah. I’ll wait for something grand to come out before I drop my 9 bucks.

Besides…I still have Lost Levels and Sin and Punishment to play.

No Samurai Showdown, sad day….oh well Fatal Fury will have to do.

Sweet, some fighting game greatness on the VC!

However, there is no reason to even contemplate if the Neo-Geo games are ” worth the price” when clearly ALL the VC titles are over priced, and really, its our OWN fault here.

ALL VC games are overpriced and it in NOT just the big N’s ” fault” If we all just did NOT buy them at the start, for a month or so, they would have DROPPED the prices. But because we DID buy them, they saw no need to not rip us off. =(
Considering how easy it would be for gamers to download these ROMs for free, it was U S who hepled to maintain the slightly high price for these ROM’S in the first place…

Another week of lame VC titles. I’m really starting to consider selling my Wii, since the reason I wanted it was to play VC games, but all Nintendo ever does is release crummy titles each week. >_

I’m no Nintendo or Wii apologist by any means, but saying all the VC releases have been “crummy” is silly. If you think all of them have been crummy, then I guess you never liked any past video games period. And especially saying it the week after they put Sin and Punishment and the real Super Mario Bros. 2 on the VC. Sure, I think some of the prices are too much, but it is what it is. And at least I don’t have to blow on my Wii to get any of the NES games to work.

Which one is the best? I want Samurai Shodown and KoF to come out…

  10. Atlantis1982 says...

People expecting King of Fighters, expect a long wait. I don’t see them releasing that game for quite some time since they can just milk that franchise on the retail market instead of the VC. I might say the same with Samurai Shodown as well.

  11. Liraco says...

Nice to see it’s not a lie but… how about releasing the games people actually WANT?

$9 is a fair price considering the cost of the actual cartridges and the original machines, but not when it’s these ugly games. They gotta hurry up with Samurai Showdown and KoF (and despite metal slug being available in the anthology, they might milk that too).

  12. 8Eyes says...

Great. 3 More games that no one really wants. Why do we get three games while Japan gets five?

  13. David says...

Anyone download one of these? How many blocks of memory do they consume?

  14. ry says...

knowing that these games were all remade 20 times over (FF, F2, FF3, FF Special, kof games, etc) it’s safe to say that these are pretty worthless wastes of Wii memory. Couple in the fact that later versions of these games (and Samurai Showdown in particular) had totally broken combo systems and you’re much better off playing other fighters like SF, GG, etc. If you MUST, wait until the latter versions arrive, for the exact same price, or buy a compilation disc for another system if you’ve got it already.

Or just get Last Blade when/if it comes out.
