Update: CoD5 returns to WWII

In a developing update to yesterday’s breaking news concerning upcoming Call of Duty 5, IGN has confirmed that Treyarch will be taking the series back to World War II. This confirmation may disappoint fans of Modern Warfare, but Treyarch assures that they will be taking on WWII from new angles including battles in the Pacific, Russia, etc.. IGN also confirmed that Treyarch has had full development time with the project since Call of Duty 3 (2006), and are utilizing the CoD4 engine to the fullest. The project has also been given a new title…Call of Duty: World at War.
More news on the Co-op front reveals that Call of Duty: World at War supports 4 players, but has yet to be confirmed for the Wii version. A DS version has been announced as well.
Are you disappointed at the roll back to WWII? I do believe that time period has been worn out, but new angles, and support with the Modern Warfare engine could make this the finest we’ve seen since Medal of Honor: Frontline.
Expect Call of Duty: World at War to release Q4 2008 – Q1 2009.

I don’t know if I’m really disappointed or not, since personally I haven’t played many of the CoD or even Brothers in Arms games (just the DS one). The idea of Modern Warfare is pretty interesting but I could give a WWII scenario a shot.

I am definitely disappointed. It doesn’t matter what angle you take, you’re still using basically the same weapons and the same technology. Frankly we have enough WWII games to last a lifetime, I think its time to choose a different conflict.

The decision to revert CoD back to WWII is going to go down as one of the worst game design decisions in industry history. CoD4 had only two major competing titles, namely Rainbow Six Vegas and GRAW 2, escaping the overly saturated and mediocre WWII genre. I don’t doubt they’ll deliver a solid game (it wont be nearly as good as CoD4, though), but the freshness and real-world relevance that helped bring CoD4 to the forefront of the industry will be impossible to recapture with yet another WWII game. I work for Gearbox Software, for crying out loud, and I can tell you first hand that this company loses sleep day in and day worrying about the market performance of Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, but we’re confident about the virtual experience we’re producing and the story that’s being told as one that’s never been told in a video game before but still WWII. Randy Pitchford is always reminding us that there is so much history and so many stories to tell (which is totally true) from WWII, but Treyarch has their work definitely cut out for them, though, and an uphill battle to really create something original yet recognizable and believable. It’s just that the overall context and scenario of WWII is now excessively familiar and lost a lot of its romantic value because the genre is so saturated.

Relax, CoD3 was crap because Infinity War didn’t make it. This will be crap because IW isn’t making it. IW have said they plan to stay modern in the next CoD they make. It will all be okay.
But otherwise, I completely agree with you about WWII and gaming.

i know this sounds weird, but i wouldn’t mind a Korean War game. everything’s about wwII or vietnam people forget about this war. since no one’s touched on it yet i bet there are all sorts of new angles and stories that could be told. you could have patrol missions, full on battle missions, behind enemy lines missions, helicoptor rescue missions. you could even mix in a little strategy by managing you soldiers, camps, munitions, supplies, field hospitals, etc. look at M.A.S.H. great show with great stories. it would be totally new and yet still not completely modern, so there would be a little romance left in it.
