1) I still don’t get the point of him having a sword or some poorly-implemented storyline.
2) When is Sonic Team (or whoever is developing this) going to realize that NOBODY LIKES THAT GARBAGE HAIR BAND-WANNABE MUSIC THEY INCLUDE IN ALL OF THEIR CRAPPY SONIC GAMES! That confuddles me beyond confuddlement.
I actually enjoyed Sonic and the Secret Rings a great deal. I found that the gameplay was simplified to be more like the original’s core mechanics (although going backwards sucked). Not my favorite Wii game, but I think a step up from the other 3-D Sonics.
It needs to the lose the voice acting though – badly. …and I agree with Andrew G’s comments that hair-band wannabe music is trash. Fortunately, much of the music in Secret Rings was not this type of music.
As for Black Knight, it looks to run in a similar vein as Secret Rings, so I think I’ll give it a rent before I consider buying.
I think that including a sword is a pretty good idea since it seems to make the gameplay smoother. I thought Sonic and the Secret Rings was pretty fun once you had some upgrades and this looks a lot better then that.
Even though the old games are fun, the things that make new sonic games better are voice acting (It can’t be bad logically speaking, you hear the darn characters), there’s a point and storyline that’s not the simple save the princess without asking why (Mario FTW) and a beautiful 3D environment. I don’t see how any of these concepts fail. Sonic and the Secret Rings was probably the greatest concept of Sonic yet: speed (when running that fast who cares about running backwards?) and the ability to see in front of you. 2D games are fine but I’d like to see the darn critter in front of me when going that fast. Plus the music is a preferential choice, I personally like it XD
Glad to see not all of these comments are filled with hate.
Anyway, I actually enjoy most of the recent Sonic games that people think aren’t that good, though most of them aren’t my top pick ever. The handheld Sonic games, for me, are just a nice refresher on what Sonic used to be like.
As for this game, I just think Sonic Team is trying to keep current, but they don’t understand that Sonic is not supposed to be current. For example, FPS was (and probably still is) popular, especially with the original XBox. Therefore, Shadow got guns. Which, though I did enjoy the game, wasn’t really a good move on the whole.
With Sonic Unleashed coming out soon, I think maybe Sonic has got a shot at a part of the fame he once had.
Oh yeah, I should also say (damn my lack of momentary memory), I loved Secret Rings. It flowed and it was simple, and the motion controls fit in. And with this being the sequel, we’ll see how it plays out. I might pick it up if it’s below my price point.
I should probably clarify that I “liked” Sonic and the Secret Rings. I thought it was a decent game for what I played (probably 3 or 4 hours worth) that looked nice and had some pretty fitting music (aside from the hair band stuff, but that wasn’t too prevalent). It was also nice to see a return to true speed and little else.
And that’s why Secret Rings was good – the “little else.” Sonic didn’t have a sword, didn’t have a gun, didn’t turn into a werewolf, didn’t do whatever else. In Secret Rings, he was Sonic and he wasn’t much more, and that was what worked. They decided against giving him any more advantage than the one he has always worked with – his speed.
It’s like when Nintendo gave Mario a water pack, F.L.U.D.D. I liked Sunshine a lot because it was a great game, but it doesn’t stand up to 64 or Galaxy because they gave Mario more than he needed, and all he ever needs is his jump and various other physical moves. Sure, there was the bee, boo, and spring suits, but those were situational, not permanent. The moments in Sunshine when Mario wasn’t attached to his water pack were the best ones in the whole game.
Also, the new Sonic games lack the proper amount of nostalgia that such a franchise has the potential to present. They try too hard to be something new when in the process, they ditch everything that made the original games enjoyable.
Anyway, I’m ranting and I think people get my point. One quick note about the music, though – I should state that while there are obviously people out there who like the cheesy hair band music in newer Sonic Titles, it’s not the simple fact that I think those songs stink that makes me degrade their usage. It’s the fact that they are not appropriate for the material to which they are attached. It’d be like adding rap music in the background of a Mega Man stage or something. Sure, some people might like the song, but that doesn’t mean it fits. Just thought I’d mention that.
the theme song is awesome, its like yeah i wanna play this game and it gets u excited. Well, i want to play this game, but will it satisfy me like the first game for Dreamcast? I want to believe…
doesn’t look too bad. secret rings was an ok game (granted i didn’t finish it). this looks like it took the ideas from secret rings and improved upon it. we’ll have to rent and see.
@Andrew G
Fludd was the best thing EVER! Oh, and he replaced Fludd with the spin (hover nozzle) and star bits (spray nozzle) in Galaxy. I suppose the travel star things are a combination of the rocket and turbo nozzles.
I haven’t bought a single sonic game since Heroes, which was pretty good. I stayed away from Secret Rings,it got terrible user reviews and I didn’t like the idea of constant motion. They should return to the Adventure play style from Dreamcast, the earliest Sonic game I own.
I love swords, but this looks like it’s still in constant motion. I might try it when it’s at bargain price. Until then,I’ve got tons of other games to get.Oh, I just remembered, Shadow is actually the last Sonic game I got. It was OK.
Off topic: For anyone who doesn’t have de Blob yet, get it. NOW!

GAY oh wow, so gay.
Three things I personally don’t understand:
1) I still don’t get the point of him having a sword or some poorly-implemented storyline.
2) When is Sonic Team (or whoever is developing this) going to realize that NOBODY LIKES THAT GARBAGE HAIR BAND-WANNABE MUSIC THEY INCLUDE IN ALL OF THEIR CRAPPY SONIC GAMES! That confuddles me beyond confuddlement.
3) Why is Sonic Team still working?!
I just died a little

I dare you to say that Escape From The City, Live and Learn, and Team Darks theme from Sonic Heroes were crappy songs. I DARE YOU.
I actually consider the sonic rock music to be really well done, half the time. I wouldn’t lump this song in with it though, this song is trash.

Wow, that song…
Wow, that sword…
Wow, that story…
Wow.
Note: this is the bad kind of Wow.

Looks ok to me. Secret Rings was one of the best overall 3d sonics, I don’t see any reason why this shouldn’t improve on that.
