More portable developers defecting from Nintendo

Monday, October 17th, 2011 at 5:58pm by Dan

Here’s another sign that developers are doubting the 3DS’s future as a mobile gaming device: Long-time Nintendo second party developer Level-5 has announced they’ll start porting and/or shifting development to iOS devices. Ouch.

Could this be one last hooray?

Could there be a better crossover adventure mash-up than Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney? I don’t think so.

There may not be any English in the trailer, or much of anything that makes sense to me because I don’t speak the Japanese language, but that isn’t stopping me from getting excited about he upcoming  Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney trailer that has popped up from last weeks TGS. Developer Level-5 has yet to let me down yet, and I don’t expect them to do so with this 3DS title either.

The game will be a crossover between the Professor Layton and Ace Attorney universes, and seeing as how they are two of my favorite franchises on the Nintendo DS, I don’t see how it could go wrong. Well I can think of one way: so far there is no confirmed North American release which means that unless I become fluent in the Japanese language between now and the time game releases next year, I may be out of luck. Hopefully more info about the title will emerge soon, allowing all the English speakers among us in on the fun.

So far all that is know about the game is that it will feature elements from both series, and instead of courtroom trials, the game will have what is known as “Witch Trials.” The game will not take place in either the Professor Layton or Ace Attorney universe, but instead take players to a medieval town known as Labyrinth City that is home to witches and and evil villain know as the Story Teller.

Stay with Infendo as more details about the game emerge, and tell us if a game of this caliber has peeked your puzzle/courtroom interests.

3. Nintendogs + Cats: Shiba & New Friends (Nintendo)
4. Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition (Capcom)

Professor Layton & Phoenix Wright cross-over coming to 3DS

This sounds like a very early April Fools’ prank, but Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney is an actual game that Level-5 and Capcom are putting together for the 3DS. I cannot wait for those accusatory fingers come pointing out of my screen, even if we don’t have a clue about gameplay yet! Hopefully the game gets released outside of Japan.

What do you think: Good idea? Bad idea? Awesome idea?

[Thanks, Erik!]

Unwound Future astounds and delivers

The credits roll, you watch the epilogue, then you close your DS and stare into space for a moment, your head swimming with thoughts of loved ones, partings, and things you’d do differently in life if you had a second chance. All you can say is, “Wow.”

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future is that kind of game—A surprising, emotion-grabbing, one-hundred-percent satisfying work of wonder. I can’t believe something so epic just took place on my Ol’ Fat Blue’s tiny little DS screens.

Most of the game is an entertaining romp through crazy encounters, amazing locales and preposterous action sequences intertwined with an onslaught of maddening puzzles.

And that would have been enough…

But, in its final chapters, Unwound Future soars through many great plot twists, leading to a final bombshell that—in terms of emotional punch—ranks right up there with the finales of FF X, Wind Waker, Kingdom Hearts and FF VII’s first disc. You don’t need to have played the first two Layton games: If you’re new to the series, you’ll only miss out on a few minor in-jokes. (more…)
