Super Mario Galaxy takes #1 spot – Game Rankings

No, you’re not seeing things. As of 12.00 a.m. this morning, Super Mario Galaxy surpassed The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time for the number one position on gamerankings.com. This is like…big. Ocarina of Time has pwned the charts for the past 9 years and Galaxy takes the top title within one week of release. It just goes to show the amount of quality and skill that Nintendo puts into their work. Here, here!!!

Let us see if it stays number 1.

I had my doubts that it would even stay in the top 10 two days ago. However, in those two days, some 12 reviews have popped up, and Galaxy’s score went up a whole point.

With more reviews sure to come, I imagine Galaxy will remain, at least, in the Top 5-for gamerankings.

I still haven’t figured out how to pull up the FULL ranking page for metacritic.

who cares about reviews, this is the greatest Mario. might even be the greatest be the greatest game ever, but it still ends up being a thing of how much you like it, not how many points it gets from a few magazine guys…

  3. Jake says...

    ^”…a few magazine guys…”

Those few “magazine guys” include 48 of the top VG sites (including IGN, Gamespot, Gamepro, gametrailers, Nintendo Power, xplay, etc…). SMG is one of the greatest games ever however, and rightfully deserves that #1.

The holy trinity of Nintendo gaming in the top 3. If anything were to overtake Ocarina of Time, I’m glad it’s Super Mario Galaxy.

  5. boisv says...

Just look at the top 3. It’s beautiful.

  6. Andrew G. says...

While I don’t necessarily agree with this (the top two games are two VERY different experiences and both have their own merits), at least it’s still a top Nintendo game. Plus, those top three games are all so fantastic, it’s practically proof that Nintendo does it best.

Still, Ocarina and I have been together for a long time. Me and Galaxy have barely passed the “booty call” stage.

I just finally opened my copy and played it tonight. It’s absolutely beautiful. I literally hung from the edge of my seat as it felt like I was the one defying the laws of gravity.

  8. Sykil says...

It’s possible (maybe even probable) that it’ll fall from the number one spot, but its fate as a top 10 game seems to be sealed. I still haven’t gotten the game, and it’s eating me alive… :( ((

  9. Daniel Primed says...

Earlier today I checked it out but it wasn’t quite there yet. Awesome to hear that its number one. Its fantastic to see.

  10. Disco says...

The game is fantastic!! And it deserves the #1 spot!!
    Go go Mario;)

  11. peshue says...

Wow that was fast. I’m not sure if it’s the best game ever, but it’s definitely one of the most polished games I’ve ever played.

  12. used cisco says...

Does anyone else find it odd that Half-Life 2 is essentially holding 3 positions in the top 10? I know its a good game, c’mon.

Anyway, yeah, Mario, fricken great. It doesn’t scratch EVERY itch though so I’m glad the other games are out there.

Also, I’m only 5 or 6 stars into the game, but the magic really starts on the Bee galaxy. It truly is a joy to play. I was actually pissed at the game for a while, because I have chapped lips right now and the game kept making me smile, thus causing lip pain. Doh!

  13. dlindema says...

Well, if Sony sponsors more reviews Galaxy might get taken down a notch. It is refreshing though to see that there weren’t any sites who rated the game like 8.3 just to get hits or something.

I am actually the most impressed by Metroid Prime having about three times as many reviews and being up there. Go Prime.

[...] Nintendo Trinity just took the top three spots on Game Rankings? I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Shigeru Miyamoto’s birthday than [...]

  15. jevon says...

umm why do we care…? we know its a great game and why do we care what reviewers think ??? its your opinion about the game that shapes how you feel about a game!!! but hats off to nintendo for such a freakin good game!

  16. Andrew G. says...

    @ jevon:

We care because Nintendo’s last generation was basically a failure. Any good news we can get regarding the Wii and Nintendo’s current hold on things is coveted. It gives us assurance that Nintendo is doing just fine (read: fantastic) this time around.

True, though, that our opinions are what matter most on a personal level. But it’s nice to see great games get the recognition they deserve.

  17. Waluigi says...

    best game i’ve played bitches.

  18. deepthought says...

Sweet. Although I’m sad to see OOT fall, it’s great that it’s mario taking the throne. Still, lots of reveiws remain to be tallied, so it we’ll need to see where it comes out.

  19. used cisco says...

“We care because Nintendo’s last generation was basically a failure.”

It totally wasn’t. They made great money and lots of great games.

That being said. Any Nintendo fan should be happy that the latest Mario game is not only great but being recognized for it.

    Well done Nintendo.

  20. wii wii says...

It is GREAT to see the top 3 are Nintendo games, but Mario 64 is better than Metroid prime.

  21. Ryan says...

what are the sales numbers though?

  22. rokerovakero says...

That’s pretty stupid, if Nintendo cared what those magazines said they would be advertising with them. some of you get mad when a reviewers give a 5 to your favotire game yet, you follow them when they give it a 10. Make up your mind, are you a magazine follower or not? Nintendo doesn’t need recognition, they have done their business without it for years… and just because it was third place las gen, doesn’t mean it now needs to be recognized by magazines, getting articles on real world magazines like Time, Newsweek, now that is important, not getting mentioned by Ign or 1up show. they are nerd magazines, they don’t get the real world. ask Microsoft about controlling the “hardcore” and how they wish the rest of the world cared…

  23. rokerovakero says...

it almost sounds like if you are still trying to prove the rest of the people how you made the right choice by following Nintendo… Nintendo is NUMERO 1, what else do you need? Nintendo is out of the hardcore business, they wanna own it too, but it belongs to Microsoft now, but in the end it comes down to making $$$. It’s like the movie “Revenge of the Nerds”, being the leader of the nerds doesn’t make you less nerd.

  24. Andrew G. says...

    @ used cisco:

It was a failure. When you’re in a race of three and, not only are you in third place but you stay there the entire time, you’ve failed. Plus, I don’t think I’ve ever bought so many games for a Nintendo system in one year. Ever. They failed to fully hold my attention (and wallet) with constant droughts and generally sub-par, forgettable titles (and let’s not forget crappy third party support, which was evidently crappy because the system wasn’t selling well enough). And even despite all of this, I was still a loyal Nintendo fan, so every other gamer (read: those who were not Nintendo fans) made sure that I knew that I was lame and ridiculous for sticking with a company known for its “kiddie” games and the choice to use a purple lunch box as its representative (when in reality, I saw Nintendo as being the company that saved, innovated, and practically invented the industry – but none of those “hardcore” meatheads will admit that, now will they).

If you ask me, that sounds like a general failure. In fact, if it wasn’t for the risky Nintendo DS, I don’t believe there would even be a Wii.

  25. used cisco says...

No system that makes its parent company loads of cash and offers as many good games as gamecube did (many of the best games of last gen IMO) can be considered a failure. Sure, they lost the war, no doubt. Even the xbox wasn’t a total failure. It lost money, essentially tied the cube in sales and it had a lot of great games. The sales of the cube and xbox only look horrible when compared to the PS1/2.

  26. DonWii says...

^The Gamecube was profitable for Nintendo, but it didn’t make them LOADS of cash.

The Gameboy Advance is what got them through the generation.

  27. used cisco says...

On the contrary, they made a LOT of money off the cube. Between the cube and the GBA, they were making as much annual profit as Sony was from the massively popular PS2.
The GBA was a profit center, sure, but the cube was profitable from day one and added a lot to the bottom line.

  28. Andrew G. says...

I’ll let you stick to your guns. Some of your points are valid. But I just prefer not to put lipstick on a pig.

  29. used cisco says...

You don’t need to put lipstick on anybody, and its not “my” guns. All you need to do is look at their financials. I’ve been invested in Nintendo on and off for a long time so I watch these things pretty closely and the cube has been very profitable.

  30. Ryan says...

How does one buy stock in Nintendo?

  31. used cisco says...

I just do it through my ameritrade account. The symbol is NTDOY. Its free to set up an account. The best way to do it would be to start some form of IRA and then fund it out of your paycheck. That way, the earnings won’t be taxed and it will decrease your marginal income.
