“This is not just the best-looking Wii title by miles, it’s one of the best-looking games in the world full stop, HD or no HD. It’s as smooth and shiny as silk, the colours are unbelievably vibrant, it’s smothered in lustrous effects, and you feel like you can reach out and touch its chunky, cute and tactile designs. Super Mario Galaxy makes most hi-def games look about as solid and convincing as photographs pasted onto empty cereal packets.”
The closer we get to emulating reality, the less real it actually looks to our mind. That’s where games like Mario (and most other Nintendo franchises) shine; they don’t try to be photo-realistic; they’re cartoonish and fantastical, and that allows it to look better in so many ways. I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on this game.
Super Mario Galaxy is like an amalgam of all the great Mario games. It’s so colorful and vibrant. It’s hard not to have a smile on your face when you play it.
I heard if you get 100 of those coins you become “MR GAY”. Kidding. :p
This may be the second game I ever purchase for the Wii. The first was MP3, and there arent any other Wii games out there that appeal to me.. I’m just sticking to the Nintendo classics.
Well it sure does look good, and it raises the bar for every other game that comes after it. Let’s hope Nintendo supports third parties enough so that galaxy isn’t the one and only game that looks this good on Wii.
Why not pour some of that development muscle over to Disaster:day of crisis hmm nintendo?
as an aside, I am annoyed by how happy those people seem to be while playing the game. I usually have a blank stare on my face ost of the time, interrupted by short bouts of “fuckfuckfuck” and goddamit” every now and then.
This is one game that really didn’t need shots of actors playing it. I understand for something that requires a lot of waggle you want people to see how that will work, but this isn’t that so please cool it with the smiley smooth-faced people.
It looks amazing. My only nitpick is that white sheen effect around the edges of Mario… they could have gone a bit easier on that effect. The white outline makes him look like he was “pasted into” the scene sometimes, like when he’s riding the manta ray and when he’s fighting the lava monster.
“Good graphics AND game play? ”
yep.
This is a gamers dream, sure gameplay is more important, however the visuals are very, VERY nice. Nice for the Wii, that is. Lets not get over excited here and say its in the ” best ever ” category of games like Gears Of War. It is a great looking Wii game, as good as most first gen 360 games that were intended for the original X-box, that is for sure.
“Perhaps Assassin’s Creed, Lair and Heavenly Sword should take notes when their inevitable sequels arrive in 2009.”
I couldn’t agree with you more on what I have heard about Lair and Heavenly Sword. However, Assisans creed? Has this game came out and been played by the masses and reviewed? From what I have seen of it in previews, it seems to be a step above those other 2 failures. Don’t put it in that category, at least not yet, its not even out yet,
I bet Super Mario Galaxy will have the power to take me away from all my Halo 3 online playing. It could turn out to be game of the year. I can not wait !
Go Mario!
Its not like its photo realistic (human like) but its realistic in its own way, it looks like you can extend your arm and reach out and touch things without the need of 3D glasses.
SMG will immerse you into the game that you will feel you’re living it, when Mario is exploring a planet it looks and feels like you are exploring it with him..
This game is not about the real stuff, this game is to take you away from the everyday real life stuffs..
I now own a 360 (and I am indeed happy with my purchase). Those games are beautiful.
And so is this one! It’s the only game on the Wii so far that can even begin to really contend with the “next-gen” graphics of other systems. It really does look gorgeous, even after I’ve been spoiling myself with Bioshock for the past two weeks. I’m proud of Nintendo for this one, and I cannot wait to play it!
We are, for the LOVE of God, in the current generation now, boys and girls. Next gen was only ” next” when it was not out yet. You know…” whats next?”
The gamecube? X-box? Ps2? They are LAST gen now.
The Wii? 360?, Ps3? These are current gen. Its, after all, the present that I live in,how bout you guys ?
When blake says next gen, he means machines that play HD games. Games for the next gen. Wii would have been current gen if it where called gamecube with the controller as a add on. It pretty much is with a UI.
Um, then where are the guns? Yeah, thats what I thought. And at what point do the hugely overmuscled underbrained space marines destroy the alien/undead/parasitic invaders? Huh? As if.
When Mr. Myamoto get involved in a game. You cannot go wrong. In fact the guy seem to redefine the videogame world every time he does something. Who will replace him when he’s gonna be gone… Personally I buy every game he put out. I never got dissapointed, I always get the most out of my Nintendo machine everytime.

props to Gabriel. I have never ever wanted photorealism in my games. I still want to remember that I am playing a game, not emulating real life.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:56 am
