Meet the new Brawl challengers - Part 2 - a controversial hero

[There are 15 new challengers in Super Smash Bros Brawl. This series will feature each new contender and rank them on their fighting potential with the Infendo Smash-O-Meter! Spoilers are present, so be careful if you wish to remain unspoilt.]
Toon Link
Sometimes known as “Celda”, The Wind Waker took a drastic departure from the art style used in previous 3D Legend of Zelda games. After a more mature image in Twilight Princess, this look would be used again in Phantom Hourglass.

The Legend of Zelda series
Link is a well balanced adversary in the Smash Bros series, but Toon Link basically serves as a replacement for Young Link from Melee.

Based on potential to win the brawl, how would you rank Toon Link?

While his moveset may not differ much from Link’s, I like the fact that he feels a bit different, moves a bit faster, and of course, retains the cel-shaded explosion for his bombs!
Put that together with the fact that I’ve always wanted to play as TWW Link in Smash Brothers, and I’m one happy camper!

i liked young link better than link in melee so i think i’ll be using toon link a lot in brawl.
he looks like a slightly faster and smaller version of link. they even have the same final smash.
i’ll say %60-70

I thought they specifically said there would be no clone characters, yet we still get Mario and Luigi, Ganon and C. Falcon, Marth and Ike, Ness and Lucas, and Link and Toon Link. What happened??

I liked young link better in melee as well. So I think Celda link could be a lot of fun

Im not too excited about this I think there are better candidates than this character.

Noremakk - If you look at the SSBB Dojo website you can see that Ness and Lucas are hardly clones of each other. They have similar move sets but there are some drastic differences. I assume the same for the other “clone” characters you mentioned.

I haven’t unlocked Toon Link yet but I played against him in an online match tonight and realized he’s NOT cell-shaded in the game! He has the same size and look, but is rendered just like any other character.

Hudders - The clone characters in Melee had differences, too. I think it’s ridiculous that they couldn’t make the movesets of each character reflect something more unique from each game. Especially the final smashes. I don’t really appreciate that Wolf has a landmaster tank, that doesn’t technically make sense. Toon Link could’ve had Valoo swoop down and breathe fire everywhere instead of doing the same thing Twilight Princess Link does… It just seems unnecessary. Of course, then, on the other end of the spectrum, they tried to give Luigi a unique final smash… and well… I’m not sure how I feel about that, either.

I hope they get a better name than Toon Link for the NA release, although it’s probably unlikely :/

@ Rabbitduck
That Valoo smash would’ve been fantastic. Even funnier would’ve been a smash where suddenly Valoo’s tail hangs down from the sky, Link grapples and swings on it, and Fat Valoo falls on everybody Gohma Battle style. And it is a shame that WW Link is a clone. I would’ve liked to see some cool attacks using the WW or SOMETHING. And where’s my favorite weapon ever, the Skull Hammer? Seriously.
And I’m still confused why they didn’t actually make him cel-shaded. They made Twilight Princess, after all. We know it’s possible.
Also, WW characters that could’ve been amazing in this game but that I knew would never show up: Tetra and Ivan (from the killer bees).

Or Niko. Who doesn’t love Niko?

I just don’t get this.
Link is already in the game. Why put another version of Link in the game? It wastes a character spot, in my opinion. Nintendo has dozens of worthy characters that could’ve taken “Took Link’s” spot. A shame, if you ask me.
Given that I barely used Young Link in Melee, I doubt I’ll use Toon Link much at all. Toon Link does NOT get my support in Brawl.

Link is my main Melee character, so I’m definitely interested to see how this variant plays. I’m a huge WW fan, so I’m very intrigued. Is it March yet?

I like this addition to Brawl. I’ve always wanted to play as WW Link in Smash Bros., and now I get my wish.
Yeah, it kind of irks me that he’s a clone character. They could have at least given him a unique final smash. But regardless, he seems to play pretty differently than TP Link in terms of speed and control (and who doesn’t love cel-shaded explosions?!), and I look forward to trying him out.
Smash-o-Meter: 70-80%

I love the Wind Waker level, though. Those are always my favorite Smash stages, the ones that are supposed to look like they’re scenes right out of the game. I guess from that point of view, I’m glad that Wind Waker is getting some exposure, because I know a lot of people that disliked it. I always found it rather underrated.

Never understood the dislike for Wind Waker. It is a spectacular Zelda game.
I will admit, the Wind Waker stage looks great in Brawl. I just would’ve preferred another character, or as some of you have suggested, if he were given a distinctive move set.

Those smash-o-meter numbers make no sense. What is it supposed to mean? How likely to win one match? The whole game? Against how many players? If there are 4 characters anything over 25% could be the favorite. I’m tired of this site making no damn sense, I’m gonna go throw up on myself now, idiots.

Toon Link is more of a clone of the young Links than TP Link, mostly because he doesn’t have the gale boomerang. It looks like he’s floatier, and does a bit more knockback. Also his dair is incredibly fast, which I’ll be looking forward to trying out. I like how his up-b traps the opponent instead of just knocking them away, too.

I say, Toon link is more of a clone to young Link in melee.
I say Toon Link is alot more easyer to play as then Link.
Link can jump higher, better recovery, attacks faster, and his downward strike is quite usefull against most of the bosses in Brawl.
