Shocker: Monster Hunter 3 ships over 1 million copies in Japan

Wait! You’re telling me Japan likes some monster hunter? Na!
“This is the first third party Wii game to have an initial shipment of over 1 million units in Japan. As a series, Monster Hunter has now surpassed 10 million units shipped.”
Not bad for a “Pay-to-Play” online title. The online features will cost Japanese gamers 800 Wii points for 30 days, 1,500 points for 60 days, and 2,000 points for a 90 day “Hunting Ticket”. North American/Europe online price points have not been confirmed. Capcom will be bringing the third console installment of the franchise to the United States in 2010.
Monster Hunter ‘Tri-’ sits high up on my most anticipated Wii games list. How about you?

Never played a single Monster Hunter game, but this has gotten me interested.

If it does sell a million copies, it will signal to Japanese game developers that they now have no excuse for ignoring the market leader, and shows that if you take a popular license and make a quality video game out of it on the market leader, it can sell as much as it will and Nintendo’s own games are simply not a factor in your inability to sell.

Jeff, you and I both know it won’t happen. Japanese devs heads are just too buried in the sand, and Western devs are too buried up their own arses. I’m almost certain their execs are variously saying “We’ve thrown so much investment at HD, we can’t waste it all by giving up now”. Signs of a gambling addict really.
On a side note, I thought Monster Hunter G was released with experimental pay to play, but that Monster Hunter 3 wasn’t confirmed as charging you.

Monster Hunter 3 has the same pay to play model as G did. At least in Japan.

Pay to Play..? No thanks…

I dont know much about this game or series. Is it required that you pay-to-play? Like WOW? Or is that just for optional online content? Like GH or Tiger Woods?
If the game costs $50, and I”m required to pay $20 every 3 months, I think I will pass.

AFAIK, pay-to-play is for online play only. If I am not mistaken, the game has at least a 2-player offline mode. I have never played a MH game before, and I also do not like these pay-to-play methods (at least, give the game for free in such case). Anyway, may be worth it for the offline cooperative multiplayer.
Best!!

Meh… to use the terminology of you young whipper-snappers.
If I understand this correctly, I am supposed to buy the game and then pay additionaly for the privlege of playing online? Am I required to wear a Capcom t-shirt whenever I am in public?

Something I must say to (somewhat) make you guys feel better. ALL Monster hunter games have been pay to play online in Japan; mind you US didn’t have to pay to play online for the original Monster Hunter, so here’s hoping to MH3 being free online.
And quite honestly, with Capcoms business strategy with MH I can’t see them charging outside of Japan.

monster hunter 3 in the U.S is free to play online!!!!!!
