Rumor: Wii Fit sells 650,000 on first day
Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 at 7:50pm by Jake
This info comes directly from the statistic geniuses at VGchartz. Their reports clock Nintendo’s new Wii Fit software selling 650,000 units on day one in the United States. Selling for $89.99, Nintendo brought in over 60 million dollars to go straight to the bank. VGchartz states this week’s total sales prediction…
Since Wii Fit is more expensive than Mario Kart or Super Smash Brothers Brawl, but appeals to a wider audience than those titles do, it is difficult to estimate whether it will follow a similar pattern. At a Mario Kart/Smash Brothers week one to day one ratio, the game could end up selling as much as ~1.2 million units in the Americas by May 24th if the current shortages are alleviated by the end of the week. At $90, the game likely will top out at $75 million to $100 million in revenue depending on how severe shortages are during week one.
Though VGchartz has had outstanding real-time accurate source records I’m still labeling these numbers under rumor. Expect an official press release soon.
Either way one thing’s for sure. Wii Fit is truly it. $$$
Have you gotten your “fit” on?

What’s really amazing is when you compare it to some movie box office numbers. Wii Fit made more money in one day than Iron Man made in its first weekend and Iron Man has one of the highest ever first weekend takes especially for a non sequel. I can’t wait to see the numbers for May and I imagine the sales for Wii Fit will sustain at least through the end of the year if not for the life of the Wii console.

This thing will sell itself. My wife has already shown off Wii Fit to two of her friends who are looking (unsuccessfully) for one for their Wii’s. Another friend asked what all she would have to buy to get Wii Fit since she doesn’t currently have a Wii. I bet you could make a killing right now with a Wii/WiiFit bundle on ebay.

How is it amazing that a good that sells for $90 is able to outperform one that sels for about $10?
I love videogames, but the insistence on comparing it to other frms of entertainment is not only pathetic, it’s usually misleading.

I’d say whatever Nintendo shipped to America probably ended up selling out. I probably called every store in Orlando and they were sold out (Kmart, Sears, Best Buy, Circuit City, FYE, Gamestop, Target). My girlfriend was nice enough to wait in line yesterday at Best Buy though to buy me one. They had 30 units, which also sold out when they opened.

Duh. Nintendo. Wii. Innovative idea. Hmmm. I preordered @ 2 places just in case some one (like GameStop) screwed up.
I understand that not everyone is a Nintendo or Wii fanboy (awww) but really, if you even thought you had a 10% chance of wanting this sorta thing you shouldve preordered and canceled later if you changed your mind.
As for comparing other forms of entertainment, # of tickets sold vs Wii Fits sold would be a better measure.

I’ll be waiting out as the rumor is that the thing will cost about $150 dollars here in Mexico (mind you that’s WITH tax).
