Rumor: Capcom working on Mega Man 9

Friday, June 13th, 2008 at 1:40pm by Derek

megamanrumor.jpgAs we make that slow crawl to E3, these news-parched weeks continue to spawn exciting rumors. Today, one of the biggest pre-E3 rumors yet comes from the Capcom camp.

According to a Destructoid source, Capcom is working on Mega Man 9.

If true, players would control the iconic “Blue Bomber” for the first time in more than a decade. The last entry in the classic Mega Man series was Mega Man 8, released in 1997 on the original Playstation and Saturn.

Unfortunately for Nintendo fans, the rumor also holds that Mega Man 9 is coming only to Xbox LIVE and PSN. But nothing has been confirmed, and I’m keeping the faith. Like Walter Sobchack once said…if you will it, dude, it is no dream.

In related news, IGN reported Wednesday Capcom has two secret projects on their roster for E3. Could Mega Man 9 be one of them?

I thought the two new projects were completely new ideas (or so I heard from someone). Anyway, I would love a Mega Man 9 and it saddens me that it would only be on XBL and PSN. I never really got into the newer Mega Man X’s and after the first Megaman Battle Network, the rest of them blew hard. Mega Man Anniversary Collection for GCN ftw. I grew up playing Mega Man and it’d be cool if this was MM9.

Dude, this better be on Wii as well.

Capcom should release it on Wii - after all, Mega Man became a popular franchise on the NES first!
They owe it to Nintendo to not screw em over when they do go live with MM9 - we need it again! (MMBN sucks big time, IMO.)

Welcome to Wii ownership. You’ve got the best selling, most popular console around - but developers don’t want to give any more effort than necessary. First we were ignored when Bionic Commando made a comeback, and now it looks like Mega Man will follow suit.
    :(

(That said, Capcom has provided some great Wii games so far… even if several of them are just significantly enhanced ports from older systems.)

I love Capcom and am always ready to welcome more games from them. I think I have everything they’ve published for Wii so far and am planning on getting We Love golf this July (it’s releasing in July right?).

Hold it, first time in over a decade? Mega Man 64? Battle Network?

  6. megaStryke says...

Actually, the last true classic series Mega Man game was Rockman & Forte for the Super Famicom in 1998, later ported for the GBA in the West as Mega Man & Bass. If you want to be specific, though, there WAS a sequel to Rockman & Forte for the Wonderswan in 1999, but it was garbage and few people acknowledge it. Plus, it’s not canon as it includes Quint from the Rockman World (Mega Man GB) series.

@HyperSonic: He said the *iconic* Blue Bomber. Not Mega Man X, Not Legends MM, not Battle Network MM. They are all different characters.

  8. Platinum says...

It better not be Xbox Live… I can’t get my 360 online!

    Capcom is such a troll.

  10. Andrew G. says...

I wouldn’t mind if it was exclusive to Xbox360 (I don’t care about the PS3 since I don’t own one), so long as it was a disc-based game. My 360 is not hooked up to the internet in any way and I am unable to do so with it at this time. x_x

In any case, a new classic Mega Man title? Count me in. That would be my dream come true.

Making Mega Man 9 PS360 only would be an epic, EPIC, jaw droppingly mind boggling WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY DOING failure on Capcom’s part. Easily the biggest mistake of the decade, as far as gaming goes.

Remind me again, Capcom…what console was it last gen that gave you the most sales on your Mega Man compilations..?
