Wired: “Buy Super Metroid, Jerks”

Wired’s Chris Kohler likes Super Metroid. A lot. Strangely, him and I are sort of in the same boat. I’ve never played Super Metroid but absolutely love Metroid: Zero Mission. Behold the persuasion:
Virtual Console’s winning streak hits six weeks with the release of Super Metroid, aka One Of The Best Games Ever. I actually was late to the party on this one. I’d played Metroid and didn’t like it. Then I tried Metroid II and, uh, didn’t really like it. So I assumed that Super Metroid, when it came out, was just more of the same. It was only after playing Metroid Fusion in 2002… that I realized: “Wait a second, you mean there’s a game on the SNES just like this, but way awesomer?”
I’m buying this game today, but I’m screwed for time. This, BioShock, Metroid Prime 3 next week. And I want to get my mitts on Brain Age 2. Gamers are so screwed this fall…

Wait, you run a Nintendo dedicated blog and you’ve never played Super Metroid? Dubbleya Tee Eff?

You know, I used to hate Super Metroid. My friend Charlie had it at his house (I was like 8 and he was probably 6 or 6, dont quite remember), and his uncle loved it and beat it like a gazillion times, but it never looked that interesting to me.
Then I played Metroid Prime, and fell in love with Samus (not literally, of course). She was so mysterious and intriguing! I then proceeded to play Super Metroid, and found out that it’s one heck of a game! Wonderful gameplay, impeccable design, and perhaps one of the creepiest video game soundtracks ever. I really feel isolated on Zebes when I play it.
Which is why I’m going to download it. Right now. I’m crazy because I’ve never beaten it (it’s so hard!). Guess it’s time to try again. ^_^

If you liked Fusion, Super Metroid is 10x better.

Super Metroid was the first title I thought of when Nintendo unveiled the Virtual Console service. If they had nothing but Super Metroid on it, I would still say it was a successful service. I’m dying to download it, but I have to wait until after work.
I really should have saved my sick days for this.

“Gamers are so screwed this fall…”
TELL ME ABOUT IT!! In addition to not having finished Etrian Odyssey yet, Luminous Arc is on its way to my mailbox, I’ve got to get Metroid Prime 3, I haven’t been able to even start Persona 3, which has been sitting on its shelf for almost a week, and I can’t put Picross DS down!
After I get Phantom Hourglass, I’m guessing I’m set for the rest of the year!
Sorry, Halo 3, I’ll see you in the Spring…

@ TRichter
I know, I know. Perhaps you’d prefer lying in lieu of candor next time?

Equivocation, at the very least. My dreamlike view of Infendo has been shattered.

*eye twitch at “still the single best one, by a Long Shot” pun*

I kept hearing about how awesome it was… pretty much everywhere. So, I downloaded it without hesitation.
And I’m glad I did. It’s an awesome game. Seriously, I can see why so many people claim it as one of the best.

When Samus runs through that level with knee deep water, you’ve pretty much seen one of the coolest scenes 1994 could offer!

This game is just the ultimate side scroller.

I still remember that fateful day in 1996-ish when my brother brought home Super Metroid. We were not prepared for the goodness that was about be unleashed. Still own a copy for my SNES.

The game rocks! I loved it when I was a kid, and I can’t wait until I have some time to play it again.

Never had the SNES, so that means I never had the chance to play this gem. Got it yesterday, and enjoying it every bit of it. I’m just afraid i’ll burn through it.
