What’s your favorite console logo?

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007 at 7:37pm by Staff

Video Lamer profiles console logos from the past to present. Some of my favs include Atari, Saturn, Playstation, Dreamcast, and GameCube. Wii’s nice, but in a less is more Helvetica-ish type way. What’s your favorite console logo?

Say what you want about the name, the GameCube logo rules.

Yeah I’ve got to agree. gamecube logo > all

On second thought: Atari logo (the original, non-slimline version).

I’ve always thought the GameCube logo was very creative. It’s a G and it’s in the shape of a cube! Mind blowing.

Cube logo rocks and so does the PS logo. I also liked the DC and the SNES logos.

The PS2 is the best and it wasn’t even in the source article .. what a misshape.

Awesome, I got on Infendo! Woo boy. Thanks for the link, Infendo:) I feel so special now.

Anyway, anonymous, I didn’t include the PS2 logo because I’m inclined to think that the Playstation brand logo is the more prominent logo for Sony. So that’s why I didn’t include it.

But again, thank you very much infendo. You made my day.

Now that it’s mentioned, the Dreamcast logo and the 360 circular design (multiple concentric circles layered on top of one another) seem very similar. But anyway, I’m a fan of the PS2 logo (and that’s the only thing I’m a fan of that comes out of Sony… besides their cheap/good-quality CDRS when they’re on sale). Someone still needs to get fired for using the same exact typeface for both the PS3 and the Spider-Man movies (produced by Sony Pictures).

The XBOX “X” globe is pretty impressive I must say, especially against the new white background and when it ruptures open in the commericals.

I also have to admit that I’m not really a fan of the Nintendo console logos. The DS logo with the “DS” is just bad bad bad–the portion with the two “O”s on top of one another is its only saving grace. The cube logo just didn’t appeal to me–too much. THe Wii and the N64 logo come close but there’s just not enough juice in them to satisfy me.

    And that’s my crit.

I can only wonder what the PS3’s logo looked like before the spiderman font took over.

As a designer I can appreciate the simplicity and pregnancy of the Wii logo, but the way the GC logo was designed is just awesome (a G and a C integrated so subtly that one doesn’t catch it at first.) I wasn’t a fan of the Gamecube font (at first it was awesome though but later on I started liking it less).

It’s interesting to see the sometimes crazy designs these consoles come up with, while the logos need to be appealing and memorable, they also have a short lifespan.

While brand logos have lasted quite a while (Nintendo, Sega, the “Playstation” logo), most can take advantage of their short lifespan to go crazy because another will usually come take their place. Still, those designs that have traits that last more than a generation (like the PSP logo using the same style as the PS2) are noteworthy, they’re rare cases.

I’ve always been a big fan of the GC logo: Like someone mentioned above, it’s both a G, a C, and a cube, in such a subtle, clever way.

I also love the N64 logo; it’s just so nostalgic to me now! I like the color and the 3D look. I remember thinking, “Woh, if the LOGO is 3D, Nintendo means business.”

So, GC and N64 are my two favorites.

Meanwhile, I have to sharply disagree with people who say the PlayStation logos are the best…

The first one is unique, I guess, but isn’t very pleasing to the eye; I still look at it thinking, “What… where? Is it supposed to be flat, or…?”

And then, the PS2 logo was simply too simple for me. I know, sometimes simple can be really good, but I felt like Sony was trying to be really futuristic and kind of failed.

Meanwhile, the PS3 logo is probably the worst logo I’ve ever seen. Spider-man font? Honestly…

I personally love the GameCube logo and the Playstation logo (the rainbow-ish colored P with the lying S, not to be confused with font such as the Spiderman font).

My personal favorites are the GameCube and the Dreamcast logos, both equally impressive to me…

I personally hate the PlayStation logo… way too lazy of a design. It may have looked good at the time, but what I hate the most is that Sony used it for the PS2 and PS3 also. Oh, and for those of you that think the PS2 and PS3 “logos” are cool: those are not logos in the strict sense of the word. Those are more like typography! (That’s why the PS logo is STILL in the PS2 and PS3 consoles and advertisements).

The only redeeming feature of the PlayStation logo for me is that if you turn it upside down it spells “ds”.

i think the best logogs are the wii logo and the n64 logo.

    1) wii is just plain and simple, gets to the point, and very friendly

2)n64 is crazy trippy when its movin, i wanna crap my pants…
