Reggie: We made Wii Music look too simple

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008 at 10:12am by Jack

Like Othello, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime wants you to know that Wii Music is simple to learn, but will take a lifetime to master.

“What’s powerful in Wii Music is this juxtaposition of something that looks so simple but is wonderfully difficult to master,” Reggie Fils-Aime told VentureBeat. “We may have done that title an injustice at E3 by showing something that looked so easy. We made it appear too simple. Now we’re showing the tremendous variety of instruments and tones and how challenging it is to make music that sounds good.”

Reggie went on to say Nintendo expects Wii Music to be one of the system’s top sellers. We’ll see, won’t we?

Update: Nick Chester, editor-in-chief of hardcore gaming blog Destructoid, feels exactly the same way.

Still skeptical about this selling? Don’t see a reason for it just because the “core” don’t get it or don’t see the fun in it.

It may not be for us but if it gets people to learn how to hold a basic beat (cuz most people can’t even do that), then the world will be a better place :P

Nope, I’m not skeptical at all. Just check my history here at Infendo ;-)

Again, my scathing impressions weren’t based on what I saw, but what I played. Yes it appeared “too simple,” but it also played “too simple.”

Never doubted it would sell. But I do doubt that I will ever buy it.

While you think it “played too simple”, it really was tricky to learn.
When I played Wii Music at PAX, I tried to learn the drums. And while simple combos were easy to learn, such as 3-drum combos, trying to get that right-style drum solo using all of the drums was indeed hard.
The person who showed me how awesome it should have sounded made it look really easy, too.
But my hands-on experience told me otherwise.
I sounded good playing the drums even though I didn’t have amazing rhythm style…so it indeed will take a while to master all of those drums.

    More positive impressions.

    The tide is changing.

Kudos to Nintendo for taking risks and innovating.

But part of that risk is that some of the ideas are just crap.

I just read a new hands-on on gamespot, and yes, they’re saying the same thing. They talk about the “…surprising amount of depth to the game…”. Hmm, that sounds like a real change of tides.
