In case you missed it: The internet’s retro gaming assassin compiled a full retrospective of the beloved Game Boy, which turned 20 in April.

With so much culture revolving around a two decades-old piece of hardware, it’s clear that the Game Boy is more than just a gaming system. It’s a common link; A symbolic piece of shared history amongst both gamers and non-gamers.

A good read.

My first GameBoy was actually the GBA… I’ve got all the iterations of that one! Still my favorite portable, especially in its “micro” edition.

I remember my first GameBoy, it was this big gray thing but it was my big gray thing and I loved it. I have so many games for it that I haven’t touched in years but back in the day I’d play it for hours. Now it is one of my most treasured possessions and is still in perfect condition, almost like new. Personally I feel that the GameBoy was the gateway to portable gaming.

@Attilio: Well, that’s because the game boy was the first handheld to have interchangeable games (something those Tiger Electronic games didn’t have).

I still remember the day I bought my original game boy. It was at a pharmacy (yes, a pharmacy) and they only had one model in. I begged my mom to buy the giant green brick for me. She did and it came with Kirby’s Dreamland free. I went through so many double-A’s with that sucker. By the time Pokemon red and blue came out, me and my brother would actually fight over who’s turn it was to play because we both had a copy of Pokemon. But once I got a copy of Link’s Awakening, that was it, my copy of the game doesn’t even work cuz I’ve played it so much.

My first Gameboy was the Gameboy Color. I was late to the party.
