Poll – Favorite gaming magazine

Monday, April 23rd, 2007 at 2:56pm by Staff

Do you remember a time when you were only updated on video game news once a month? Magazines were once the source for news, rumors, cheat codes, etc. Despite the Internet spoiling the monthly anticipation, a lot of game magazines still exist. This week, we want to know:

What’s your favorite gaming print magazine?
Game Informer
EGM
GamePro
other

Please let us know what ‘other’ magazines you like in comments.

Results will be revealed and discussed on Infendo Radio this weekend!

Since there’s no None of the Above selection, I chose other. I don’t usually read any of these magazines, because the internet is always so much more up-to-date. And, FREE! :) Infendo, WiiNintendo, Joystiq and Kotaku are enough to keep me up to speed on the latest gaming news.

    I’m surprised Nintendo Power wasn’t a choice…

  3. Keefe says...

    Nintendo Power…

Nintendo Power is my personal favorite so other.

When I used to consult only magazines, it used to be Play Magazine!

I must confess, however, that what attacted me the most about that magazine was its graphic design… It was beautiful! The covers, the screen captures, the concept art. I don’t know how they did it, but all the artwork and even the game shots they aquired looked gorgeous. And their page layout made it looked like a top-quality publication, more like a GQ than a GamePro.

Their take on games was also a bit out of the ordinary when it came to their favorites. They usually picked often-overlooked games for their feature articles.

They don’t make magazines like they used to. Nintendo Power is the obvious choice now, and back in the 80s, but IMHO the best mag ever produced was Next Generation in the mid 90s. Glossy pages, great industry info that wasn’t available anywhere else, and the mag didn’t seem to play favorites despite the fact there were a dozen consoles competing for market share at the time (3DO, CD-i, NeoGeo, Jaguar, SNES, Sega CD, 32x, Saturn, PSX, etc …).

Next Gen was the bomb when it debuted.

I miss magazines like Electronic Games or Computer & Video Games. I had a charter subscription to Nintendo Power as a kid and move on to EGM for a while after college. Now I just get Nintendo Power.

    Edge

EDGE is the best for sure. The covers on that magazine are designed with care, and then printed with a luscious glossy ink that even feels high class. The content is damn nice too. Those British sure know how to arrange words.

But if I must choose something American, EGM is my choice. The redesign brings it closer to EDGE in terms of cover design and layout. (and even name, as they dropped Electronic Gaming Monthy). However, it still lacks some of the finesse of EDGE’s writing. (Perhaps they need to add a “u” to their color)

The info is often dated for us Yanks who read it, but EDGE is by far the most professionally done. Reminds me of the 90’s and the days of Next Generation Magazine. The paper they used for the cover was alone worth the price of admission.

    Other = NINTENDO POWER.

Edge. Nothing else comes even close in quality. Unfortunately…

I vote for Nintendo Power. It’s the only magazine I read from cover to cover.

I don’t know why, but many Nintendo fans don’t take NP seriously. Its absence from this poll is indicative. It has improved a lot over the past year, so I highly recommend you pick up a copy if you haven’t read it lately!

  14. Chris says...

    Nintendo Power

    Edge,
    Pc Gamer (uk) occasionally.

    I can’t stand American ad-zines.

  16. Stan says...

Since I only own Nintendo gear, Nintendo Power is the way to go.

I love Infendo, and I’m fine with the fact it’s a US based blog and reflects a mostly US audience.

    However,

The internet is very much international, meaning everyone is reading here, and once in a while, even those in America hear about international gaming news (beyond Japan) and coverage etc.

Basically I’m a little annoyed at the number of polls infendo puts out that are very much US centric, or ignorant of everyone else, and relegating the rest of the world to “Other” doesn’t always cover it.

Anyway, that’s my food for thought.

    Thanks

    Play Magazine now,

    in the 90’s, Next Generation.

The rest had too many ads. These two had just enough game stuff that made the mag worth buying.

gameinformer is without a doubt the best magazine, and I have owned a years worth of gamepro and nintendo power and seen how much it owns them

  20. Rauru says...

I used to be a long-time subscriber to GamePro, but now only to Nintendo Power.

  21. Falseblue says...

    Wherez my Big N power?

Tsk. That would of ben a great choice.

  22. gambit says...

PC Gamer. All others are poo. Although NPower has gotten much much better in recent years.

  23. Walter says...

first, i want to add that i am shocked nintendo power was not mentioned, as i love it too and would have chose it, but had to pick other. i do like game informer though.

i was surprised but neogaf had a poll like this not too long ago and what was surprising was the result. they also had alot of them choose nintendo power, citing how much it has improved in the last year.
then i think it was play, then some edge, then i think egm, them it went downhill from there, though egm recent issues were met with contempt by alot of people i think.

  24. Anonymous says...

Mine would have to be Play magazine or Hardcore Gamer. It is really a toss up between the two. I enjoy them both.

  25. Caion says...

Back when magazines were my only choice for gaming info, my mags of choice were Next Generation and Ultra Game Players.

Next Generation was the best for news and editorials, each issue being filled with thought-provoking columns. Ultra Game Players had a cult following for their humor, and they had some good reviews/previews too.

It’s a shame both of them died before their time (though I’m glad Next Generation still exists in website form). Currently I’m subscribed to Nintendo Power (3 months for free … Just couldn’t resist).
