Poll – Best FPS control
Monday, November 24th, 2008 at 4:34pm by DavidNow that there have been a bunch of good FPS titles released for Wii, I thought it might be fun to revisit this poll idea:
What is the best FPS control scheme?
And in comments, please list your favorite FPS of all time!

November 24th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Favorite FPS? Tough call… It’s gotta be either System Shock (1 and 2) or Counterstrike. Very different games, but both excellent.
Regarding the controllers, using a traditional controller is clearly the worst option in my opinion. The Wii remote and nunchuck combo are a great innovation for FPS games (shame there aren’t many good titles on the console using them properly though), with the inimitable accuracy of a mouse being the best choice.
November 24th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Portal is my fav
i think the wiimote ad nunchuck is good i just havnt used it enough for fps games for it to rly over power the flexibility of a mouse and a keyboard
November 24th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Only partially related… but somewhat interesting news anyway:

I’ll believe it when I see it, not a moment before.

…No Wii Zapper option?
November 24th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Heh, good point HyperSonic! Consider that part of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk option since it’s still sort of the same thing, I guess.
November 24th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
While that’s fundamentally true, David, most FPS developers don’t seem to think so when they give the Wii Zapper a different control scheme. =P Take Medal of Honor 2, for example… Eh, I’m rambling. I like the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo anyway. Metroid Prime 3 for the win.
November 24th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
my choices for fps are star wars battlefront II (PC) and metroid prime 3
November 24th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
The wii controls are defenitey better than normal controllers, but they still fall behind kb&mouse in so many ways. Customization, accuracy, number of buttons etc.
November 24th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
PC: Half Life 2
Wii: Metroid Prime 3
360: Left 4 Dead
November 24th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I’m a big fan of the wii remote + nunchuk but it’s still not quite as good as keyboard and mouse. maybe Wii Motion Plus will make it even better.
November 24th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Metroid Prime is probably my favorite FPS of all time, rivaled perhaps only by BioShock. My favorite setup is Wiimote/nunchuck since it feels the most natural out of all of the choices. I’m sure the mouse/keyboard setup is great if you’re looking to be the best at it, but is it really anything like actually firing your weapon? No, not at all.
November 24th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
kb/m for anything i am trying to actually compete at. it’s just far more accurate than any other option. i was all about the kb/m adaptor for the original xbox. when you see serious people playing for money with wiimote contraptions against people with kb/m, then maybe the tech will be far enough along to make a comparison meaningful.
if i’m just chilling, wiimote’s fine, but thumbsticks are still just more natural for me to use without thinking about them. also, it’s easier to eat and drink and IM while using thumbsticks than with a wiimote. cause multitasking is what relaxing is about.
November 24th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
also, i need to learn how to spell my own name
November 24th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
well quite a few:
_GoldenEye
_CoD4
_Counter Strike
_Half Life2
_Unreal2
_Metroid Prime3
Mouse+Keyboard ftw
November 24th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Probably either Half-Life, Portal (It’s an FPS, ok!), Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 3, BioShock, or Call of Duty 4.
November 24th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Well personally, I believe that a mouse and keyboard work best, followed up by the wii controller. I just find that a good mouse gives the best aim and reaction time, though I haven’t played any fast paced FPS’s on the Wii yet, so I can’t really say how the wiimote would work. (By fast paced I mean Unreal Tournament fast) As for my favorite FPS’s, instead of just writing one, I have a small list of my favorites.
-Doom
-Doom 2
-Quake 2
-Unreal Tournament
-Unreal Tournament 2004
-Half Life 2
-Counter Strike (1.6 and Source)
-Team Fortress 2
Surprised most of these haven’t been listed yet. GameGod had a few good ones (actually all of them are good games), but as a longtime gamer, I really don’t think that, say Goldeneye is something that still stands today as one of the games that defines the FPS genre and experience. And while MP3 is one of the best games on the Wii, to clarify, it is an FPA, or First Person ADVENTURE, with a heavy emphasis on exploration. Well these are my thoughts anyways. Please feel free to comment/disagree with/on this post.
November 24th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Wii remote + nunchuck is my favorite controller. There is no doubt the mouse allows more precision, but there is no comparison to the sensation of actually pointing to your enemy. To be honest, I would say the mouse is too much precise to create a good fps.
My favourite FPS games: 1) Doom 2, 2) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and 3) Goldeneye.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Depends on what you mean by best. For precision and control, the mouse and keyboard is unlikely to be topped any time soon. As someone who has won prize money for playing games where you shoot things from a first person perspective, I feel confident saying this. That said, I really like the Wiimote when the controls are done well. It feels relatively natural, and is fairly accurate, plus it’s fun to point at the screen and shoot stuff. That said, if I’m playing to win, I’ll take the mouse and keyboard every time.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Oh, and my favorite FPS is Tribes, no contest. Best FPS ever made by a mile.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
I’ve played through Medal of Honour: Allied Assault more times than I care to count! Why, I know not…
November 24th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are the greatest FPS ever created. They have revolutionized the FPS genre twice over. These games set the bar in which other FPS are compared to.
November 24th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
kb+mouse = superior
anyone who says otherwise is a casual gamer.
Oh wai-
November 24th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Mouse and KB is still number one, unquestionably.
Funny how after all this time, with innovations along the way, it is STILL the most accurate and best for competitive gaming.
In no particular order, my 5 favorite FPS for the time they were released in, are
Goldeneye 007 ( N64)
Doom ( PC)
COD4 ( X-box 360)
Quake ( PC)
Unreal.
November 24th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
KB+M is the best, until there is a good enough game on the Wii in the future to prove me wrong otherwise.
BTW, btw…We all know deep in side, that Delta Force (PC) was the greatest FPS ever made. You know what I am saying, noobs? Bow down to your god of rock.
November 25th, 2008 at 12:07 am
Psssh. Tribes ate up and shat out games like Delta Force amongst the knowledgeable players back then. Heck, Terra Nova did a better FPS using voxel technology two years earlier.
November 25th, 2008 at 1:51 am
Hasn’t this poll been given already? (Maybe more than once before even)
November 25th, 2008 at 2:03 am
Favorite PC FPS? Quake 2.
Favorite VG Console FPS? The Conduit.
November 25th, 2008 at 2:54 am
A lot of FPS fans come here.
Kinda sad.
November 25th, 2008 at 2:55 am
Keyboard and mouse is the best, no question. Wiimote+nunchuk control is a close second, but not /quite/ as precise due to a mouse having a flat surface to steady with. Dual analog controllers however are a horrible, compromised way of playing FPS’s.
November 25th, 2008 at 4:30 am
@Gausser,
What would Motion Plus do to the Wii FPS controls? FPS controls using the remote and nunchuk rely on the IR pointer for aiming and have nothing to do with the accelerometers. The only thing Motion Plus could do is add to gestural interactions, like the Grapple beam, or door lock aspects of Metroid Prime 3.
Favourite FPS: I’ll cheat, go third person and say Resident Evil 4. As for control scheme, I’d have to go with remote + nunchuk, because I don’t like gaming at a table.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:53 am
First off, I don’t think the comparison’s fair as one of the best Wii “FPS” thus far is Metroid Prime 3, and the controls were AWESOME but they were also tailored for a console, not for a PC that was then moved to a console.
While certainly not comfortable, keyboard and mouse is my favorite for FPS games, though sometimes controls can get too complicated and you start hoping you had some simpler control schemes or dedicated buttons like on a controller as opposed to a mess of keys.
On CONSOLES, Wiimote just plain owns, I hate having to go back to aiming with an analog stick, it feels downright archaic. Can’t wait for The Conduit.
Have you played RE:Umbrella Chronicles? Awesome with the “lightgun” setup (I did it with no zapper), imagine doing that on a mouse and keyboard, that’d be nasty.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:58 am
Favorite FPS . . . man that’s kinda hard.
Doom
Unreal Tournament/2004
COD4/TF2
The first two had sticking power (I can’t tell you how many times I beat Doom and I played UT for years). COD4 and TF2 are hanging around because I still love the multiplayer, but we’ll see how long they stick around.
And I’m a keyboard and mouse person. FPS usually are based on twitch gameplay and the WiiMote/Nunchuk just doesn’t cut it. I preferred MP3 on the advanced control setting (only way to play, imho), but it was still annoying at times to turn. Still, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than thumbsticks.
November 25th, 2008 at 10:33 am
I find it funny that the one of the only complaints against m/kb is that it’s too accurate. Isn’t accuracy the number one asset one needs to succeed in an FPS?
November 25th, 2008 at 10:33 am
i guess my fav is day of defeat, the non source version.
i put way too much time into that game.
November 25th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
1.kb/m
2.Traditional dual thumbstick
3.Wiimote
1.COD4 PC
2.Half-Life 2 PC
3.Halo Xbox
I prefer the traditional console controller setup over the wiimote because the wiimote always seems like it would need a massive amount of calibration to make the aiming feel nice to me.

“BTW, btw…We all know deep in side, that Delta Force (PC) was the greatest FPS ever made. You know what I am saying, noobs? Bow down to your god of rock.”
I would have LOVED to play you, in the day. I was almost always number one after the online games came to an end, with only the occasional challenger to my top spot. It was almost boring , and if you are half as good as you brag to be, it would have been great to play against you and have an actual fun challenge.
And yeah, it was a very fun game, probably wroth an honorable mention along with Terra Nova and Decent !
November 25th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I’m a bit torn for what should take second place; Keyboard/Mouse or controller. The reason: I loved Halo 1 on the PC, and I loved both Metroid Prime 1 and 2. Hmm…
November 25th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Now that I think about it, I think I love console ones because many have a “lock-on” option.
November 25th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
@Wii Wii
Awww, love you 2 man. Sadly, I can only love games instead of play my heart out for them these days. I had some pretty magical moments back the days with Delta Force. A lot people didn’t have good enough connection 2 play a proper game, so we would have 20+ people lane party in the neighborhood with around 10 PCs and played the shit out Delta Force. There was just nothing liked the game in our minds at the time. Not like now, everything is the same or try too hard to be something that they are just not.
Funny before Delta Force hit the street, I had a dream about a game looks and feels just like it. But instead of soldiers, it was about cowboys shooting around under the desert sunset, ha. ;-[

@ Kyle:
Yes, the kb/m setup is accurate, but it’s not natural. This is an interesting poll because it doesn’t just ask what people prefer in their controller, but also how they prefer to play their game.
I like the Wiimote/nunchuck because (as I said above) I like the ability to aim and point at my enemy as if I’m actually holding the weapon. When I’m playing a game, there are few of them that I feel the undeniable need to be “the best” at. So I prefer what feels the most natural.
That’s not to say that the kb/m setup is bad. If you play to win, more power to you and I hope you really enjoy that. But I play to have fun.
November 25th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
i believe that their is a bit of a bias for this question
November 25th, 2008 at 10:50 pm
I like the Wiimote/Nunchuck, but unfortunately for the most part FPS’s on the Wii are far inferior to the FPS’s on the 360/PS3/PC. MP3 is one of the few exceptions, and hopefully The Conduit will be as well. So while it may be the “best”, I”m not going to pick it at the cost of game quality.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:16 am
I think KB+M is always going to be the superior set up for FPS is b/c of simple physic.
Let’s say you truly achieve the 1:1 ratio response with Wiimote/Nun, you still have to you use your whole arms and hands. Which in turn, the input requires much more excess motions than KB/M without the counter force or “ruler” of the desk. Why would you want to play with triangles when you can run through a line? Shortest path wins, always.
Finally, people usually forget the fact that unless you are shooting in a real 3D world, you are still dealing with a 2D projection, you are looking at a 2D monitor remember? So only your mouse could give your true 1:1 response.
In a battle btw KB/M and Wiimote/Nun in FPS games, and all other things being equal, KB/M will always be the superior setup.
November 26th, 2008 at 10:07 am
I gotta go with standard controller. Mouse and keyboard I have to hunch over at my desk. Wi-chuk I have to flail my arms around. So while not the most accurate or “immersive”, the dual sticks are the most fun for me.
November 27th, 2008 at 5:51 am
@daverage
Nobody’s forcing you to flail your arms around to play a FPS on the Wii. In fact, I can’t think of a single game that has you do that.
As for controls, it has to be the Wii remote and nunchuck really. It’s the most intuitive and immediate.
I can’t imagine what sort of games those who prefer the traditional controller are playing.
November 29th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
The Metroid Prime series is my favorite, especially Hunters and Prime.
No DS option, though, so I just went with WiiMote and Nunchuk.
