Pokémon MMO, being made by fans.

While cruising around the internet today, I happened to stumble upon something that would be of great interest to a lot of people. Apparently a group of Pokémon fans have been working on an MMO version of what seems to be Pokémon Emerald. Although it is still in the beta phases, when it is complete you are apparently supposed to be able to battle anyone and chat with other trainers. As well as see many other trainers on the world map in real time. It also is supposed to support both the lands of Kanto and Hoenn, and all the Pocket Monsters that have appeared in those lands. If you want to see some screen shots, and hear about what they are including in this little project, take the jump into the world of Pokémon.
Wouldn’t it be nice to play a Pokémon game where you’re not the only trainer around. Fighting against multiple trainers, never knowing when you’re going to end up blacking out and ending up at a PokéCenter with your Monsters? Sounds like a breeze of fresh air coming in from the seas of Kanto. Blowing away the old boring NPCs with multiple new allies or Rivals.
From what I could see from these screen shots, is that they have put a lot of work into this system they are developing. Currently being programed as free ware for Windows XP. They are testing a Beta which seems to be very well done, although I personally wouldn’t touch it until it is finished. They did list some of the things working in their latest version on their website, as of now you can do the following…
- Wild Pokemon Battles
- Catching Wild Pokemon
- EXP, Pokemon Grow Levels and Evolve
- PvP Battling
- Multiple Maps (Kanto Region)
- Working PokeCenter and PokéMart
- Pokemon Storage System
- NPC’s and NPC Battles
- Pokemon and Item Trading with other players
- Private chat with members you invite
- Gyms and Gym Badges (only Brock’s Gym for now)
- Evolution Stones
I seriously wonder why Nintendo hasn’t tapped this market yet, as I’m starting to get really tired of those dungeon games. I mean, I’m sure lots of Pokemon fans have been asking for something like this to happen for years. Anyway here’s hoping they don’t get one of those dreaded C&D’s.
Note: the website is not affiliated with Nintendo of America.

But watch as Nintendo tell them shut it down.

@Atlantis: Yeah for real. Pft.
A PKMN MMO eh, a friend from high school envisioned this (I’m not kidding) and fantasized about a PokeMMO, and we talked about how cool it would be (official or unofficial game). I wished I still talked to him, I wonder what he’d say now.

I’m no Pokémon “fanboy,” but I was there when Red came out, I battled my friends, and I will ALWAYS have money available in my wallet for a REAL online Pokémon, if they ever make it. The games are fantastic.
If Ninty ACTUALLY put there all into making a truly amazing, immersive 3d mmorpg Pokémon game, with all the little details that everyone wants, GTA4’s release would be like ninjabread* compared to it.
*ninjabread - n. make up your own extremely obvious definition

Wow. That’s really– wow!

I love homebrew projects and fan projects but this thing is just C&D bait. How can they not know this? What’s sad is that, had some of them decided to go and make an original game, it would have been a hit. Some of them might do that after Pokemon World is destroyed but why wait?

Waste of effort.

i tried it. its really slow.
its a good idea though.

If Nintendo took something like this seriously, I think they would have more people playing a Pokemon MMO, than Wow, or maybe just as much as Wow.
I am seriously surprised Nintendo hasn’t taken any steps to making a real Pokemon MMO because it would be extremely successful.

Pokemon to me seems to fit the bill for an MMO perfectly yet nintendo doesn’t want to go into MMOs due to security issues and such.
I’m gonna try this out now. Not sure what you mean about the website loading slowly. It loads instantly for me with my rubbish 1mb connection.

I can feel it stirring inside me… An addict never fully recovers.

This isn’t the first project like this, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Remains to see if this one will catch on, though from the general level of (im)maturity displayed on their forums, and the lack of proper spelling and grammar of their admin staff in the posts I looked at, I’d be very surprised if anyone would pick them up. Support from Bulbagarden/Bulbapedia is right out for starters, and Serebii doesn’t tend to do strategic alliances. I can’t think of any of the 2nd tier sites that would risk their reputation on a project like this either, after the POL debacle.

I hope Nintendo is making notes… Although given their level of commitment to online play, it is more likely that they will put the effort in suing the creators of the MMO site than creating a real Pokémon MMO!
I’ll keep wishing…

Why sue them? are they selling anyting?

Eh, if Nintendo hasn’t threatened them with legal action by now they aren’t going to until the game becomes more of a permanent beta. they’v been working on this for a long time. They have made progress, but until it starts bringing in many people or they start making money off of this, I believe Nintendo will continue to just monitor them.

[...] Pokemon MMO Being Made by Fans [...]

Well, making a official mmo should be a trouble because a couple of reasons.
1. They need to make the game in PC Plataform, you guys know just as I do that No MMO is capable to run in a console like Wii, and you need Direct net connection beacuase it will lagg a lot (in a Wii per example).
2. Being a PC game, they can’t charge people as they can on console games beacuse PC games are always cheaper than console games no matter which type…..
3. I don’t think they have any experience in nintendo about PC plataform, disadvantage for them.
4. Pokemon games must have a CD or so, the data will be too big for download, lot of info…
5. MMOS must often updates/upgrades because if it not updated and renewed it isn’t a MMO anymore, and nintendo obviously isn’t a company that will spend much time in a single game like the MMO you guys hope will need, it’s known that nintendo works only at limited-plot games with an end at some point.
6. Overall a MMO just don’t much nintendo company’s style of making games.
(Don’t see me as a negative maniac, if they happen to realease a PokeMMO to the stores, ill be the first buying it, not that it really will happen in near future)
By the way, legal problems don’t really matters nintendo being one of top-worldwide game companys and pokemon being one of it first games and nintendo propiertie.
If you guys really will like to play an pokemon MMO just play fan made ones - you may be surprised and find a really good one.
and/or continue hoping that a official one will be releasen (which possibilities are 10%/100% for best chance)
and one more thing…
if Nintendo wanted to shut down the fan-made mmos they already will did so, just keep that in mind.

Nintendo can’t shit it down it’s going to be for free
