First and foremost, this news should be taken with a huge, HUGE grain of salt.
According to a post on The Paul Gale Network, (the same site who was notorious for starting the Rocksteady Games/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rumor) they claim that Austin-based Retro Studios’ new game will be a Star Fox/Metroid crossover. That’s right, a crossover between a cunning fox who flies an Arwing, and an intergalactic bounty hunter who is known for killing metroids and blowing up planets.
Yep, let that childhood fantasy of a collaboration sink in for a second.
Now, ever since the release of Retro’s last game, it has been rumored that the developer would be working on a Star Fox reboot. Still, this one is a little hard to wrap one’s head around. The idea of a crossover between Nintendo’s two vastly successful sci-fi franchises looks great on paper, but how would Metroid and Star Fox’s gameplay mechanics mesh perfectly together? Well, in theory, the on-rails aerial combat of Star Fox could be used to implement control over Samus’ own gunship (with more freedom, as opposed to just simple commands in Metroid Prime 3), while Retro could take another crack with Fox McCloud with ground combat. The claim brings to light a few of the possibilities, yet would Retro be able to undo what Namco did with Star Fox: Assualt? Tall task indeed.
As for story? Well, this is where the rumor begins to show its true colors. One would have to scour the Internet for the most coherent Star Fox/Metroid fan-fiction to get a good idea of where this rumored title could go in terms of plot. However, given the nature of pre-E3 news, this rumored collaboration doesn’t look to have any legs.
But, what do you all have to say, especially about the the rumored features? Tell us in the comments below.
