Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 at 5:58pm by Jake
Several hardcore Mario Kart fans sent in this new tidbit concerning the much anticipated Mario Kart Wii. Apparently ONM (Official Nintendo Magazine for the UK) has leaked some exciting new details including…
- Improved online battle mode
- Pull off stunts in midair
- Tracks from the DS version will be added
- 16 online multiplayer!
That last bit of news just made my day. 16 players online…this is gonna be sweet!

^^MIS
what’s the point in playing mario kart without blue Shells, triple shells/power-ups?
September 5th, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Hopefully no snaking, and I will ‘maybe’ pick up this title. Thats a big maybe.
September 5th, 2007 at 6:53 pm
16-player online!? That’s calling for sheer chaos.
Oh, I’m there:)
September 5th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Gah, why WOULDN’T you want snaking, Atlantis?
September 5th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Btw, this is SO odd, seeing as less than 24 hours ago, I asked about this game in one of the comment spots!

With this, MOH: Heroes 2, FIFA 08, RE:UC and the big 2 left, ill be one happy hardcore gamer!

Snakers are going to ruin the fun like they did with Mario Kart DS.
September 5th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
And yet STILL no confirmation on Smash Brothers online. I have a bad feeling about this…
September 5th, 2007 at 11:29 pm
Snakers hate Wii controllers, they’d never even play this new game.
September 5th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
Um… what is snaking?
September 6th, 2007 at 12:09 am
Anti snaking is gay. If you don´t like snaking buy diddy kong racing.

Brian, snaking is a strategy in Mario Kart DS where racers drive in a zig zag pattern on the track and use sliding and boosting to gain a somewhat unfair advantage. To be honest, I can’t imagine repeating the technique over and over is any fun to do.
September 6th, 2007 at 12:22 am
Why get rid of blue shells, triple shells, etc.? they add a lot of action to the game.
@ brian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnX4l8UoQUc&mode=related&search= that is snaking. please don’t do it. PLEASE!!!
but the wiimote doesn’t seem like it would be good for snaking.
SNAKING SUCKS!!! I R LIEKS BLUE SHELLS!!!11!1

I think snaking is a great element in Mario Kart! It takes skill and when mastered, you have the better ability. Just because yal can’t drift/snake doesn’t mean it’s stupid. If you think that your getting whooped to bad, then step up and learn.

Jake I tried snaking and it sucked all of the fun out of the race. If winning is that important to you that you’d rather perform a repetitive pattern over and over, that’s cool… I just don’t see how that’s in any way an enjoyable gaming experience.

Jake -
There’s been lengthy discussions on the the interweb re the blue shell.
Why should someone placed 7/8 in the race ruin the prospects of someone in 1st place?
I’d just like the series to return to it’s Miyamoto-developed SNES roots. It should be about the racing with powerups giving the “edge” and fun factor. Triple-powerups ruin the carefully crafted balance of the SNES version (and every Mario Kart since the SNES version).

This report is not true, but speculation:

Dunno if anybody mentioned this yet, but these so-called details have been confirmed by ONM to just be ‘healthy speculation’. :’/

Yep, that’s right… the UK Official Nintendo mag had to apologize:

I’m specially suspicious of the 16-player online race. I don’t think the Nintendo Wi-Fi service could handle that many simultaneous connections in a game, even in a racing game!
September 6th, 2007 at 11:16 am
Snaking is fun because it’s an opportunity to test your finger ability to the maximum :P. But snaking against people that doesn’t snake is stupid.
About the blue shell, or triple power ups, the idea is to make items as important as good driving, so it’s good for me.
September 6th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
I have very mixed feelings about snaking…on one hand, it is completely fair. But to be honest, snakers do have a tendency to ruin the fun for those of us - myself included - who refuse to use the tactic.
There should be a way to set up online matches based on skill level, to make sure that the snakers are kept together and so as not to discourage those who don’t snake.
September 6th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
I don’t use the tactic because I don’t know how….
But if I knew how, and I saw myself racing against a snaker, I would immediately switch to that tactic!
September 7th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Snaking just turns the game into one repetitive motion. It’s a bit like wanking off, but less gratifying.
@Derek, the “Rivals” online mode is supposed to do exactly that, but it doesn’t seem to work as advertised … If they could just improve the detection of skill levels, I’d be happy with the same “Rivals” mode in the Wii version.

Its funny because most of that stuff was revealed and confirmed by Reggie himself during the last E3.

Basically speaking, snaking in Mario Kart DS is like camping in FPS: May take skill, but annoys the hell of everyone else.
