Nintendo warms to critical user-generated comments

George HarrisonNext-Gen examines Nintendo’s once controlling past with regards to user-generated content, particularly critical comments made about the company online. VP George Harrison divulges…

“Opening up a MySpace area doesn’t sound all that innovative to you guys,” he told an audience of game marketers. “But for us it was a big deal. When people previously said bad things about Nintendo on our community areas, we deleted. Now we had to take the decision not to meddle.”

Great to see the company backing the value of learning from your fanbase. Surely they delete sailor mouth comments, however…

That would explain why I found some xbox fanboy on the official nintendo forums calling everything about nintendo a ‘douche’ clearly didn’t know a thing, but hey.

I’m glad they’ve turned this corner. Silencing your critics has never worked.
Vlad Cole over at Joystiq used to delete comments all the time when they would point out how horrible his posts were. He would even delete any posts that mention that he would delete posts. But I think he’s gone now.
