Nintendo officially updates logo
Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 at 12:07am by Jake
Nintendo of Europe has just spread a press release concerning a “big” change in their logo. Kotaku has the goods…
Dear Media Partner,
For several years, a new generation of Wii and Nintendo DS games have adorned themselves with a new logo, in discrete grey.
In various publications the former logo, with red lettering, can still be seen. In the event that you have not already done so, we would like to sincerely ask you to now only use the current, gray Nintendo logo.
Yours sincerely,
Your friendly Nintendo PR team.
Not huge news, but it is a little sad to see big red leave after 20+ years of service.

Will infendo go gray next?
November 26th, 2008 at 12:45 am
What!!!!!
November 26th, 2008 at 1:20 am
Why nintendo? The red was bright and friendly.. gray looks sterile and corporate.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:36 am
ughhh nasty i hate gray. now my red nintendo jacket is collectable
November 26th, 2008 at 1:41 am
Nintendo’s all gray and no play now.
…Terrible, terrible, completely untrue pun.
November 26th, 2008 at 1:47 am
Geez. Don’t do that to me. When I saw this headline in my RSS feed, I got all freaked out. I was all, “Their logo has been the same for a s long as I can remember! How can they change it?” But they really didn’t. SO the color is different. No biggie.

Oh woo hoo, let’s all live in a world of monotony and eat grey skittles.
Color rules. This isn’t The Giver.

You know, if you look back at some of the new Wii Boxes, like Wii Fit, it has the gray logo.
November 26th, 2008 at 4:05 am
Even my DS phat has that logo. I still prefer the red one.
November 26th, 2008 at 4:52 am
I mean its not that bad, it could be purple. Or something else but let’s just hope that stays in europe (no offense).
November 26th, 2008 at 5:12 am
I prefer the red one from back in the day… though it doesn’t matter all too much, the logo I see most when playing games is the Wii or DS one, not the nintendo one.
I lol’d at that last bit, I read it at first quick glance thinking.. SPIDERMAN! ‘Your friendly neighborhood Nintendo PR team’
@ Guch – as long as I live I shall never allow skittles to go gray!

Red, shmed. It’s a different color, so what?
I’ve known the Nintendo logo for a long time, and this isn’t really a significant change in the design.
I mean, remember the logo Nintendo used during the Nintendo 64 era?The huge, 3-D “N” that appeared before the game started up?
As far as I know, that’s the only time Nitendo has ever made a significant change to their logo. But now, the pill-shaped “Nintendo” logo that we know and love is back, albeit in a different color.
November 26th, 2008 at 7:13 am
It’s completely inconsequential and will in no way affect any gaming experience I have on Nintendo consoles, but for some reason I can’t help but feel a bit gutted about this
.
RIP Red Logo!

The gray looks better on all the white they use.
November 26th, 2008 at 8:10 am
URGENT:
Please change the format color of this website to gray.
November 26th, 2008 at 8:28 am
This is like the reverse of what Nintendo did with the zapper back in the day, going from gray to red.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Not that big of a deal, I’m sure well see the red again. Or crap, different colors.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:21 am
RED WILL LIVE ON AT INFENDO!
November 26th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Red hurts my old, weary eyes…
November 26th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Sounds like a job for de Blob!
November 26th, 2008 at 10:01 am
NOOOOOO THE COLOR HAS BEEN LOST
November 26th, 2008 at 10:05 am
The was certainly the final nail in the coffin.
November 26th, 2008 at 11:42 am
This was a needless change. Why not Wii blue at least? In these hard economic times, does gray cost less?
November 26th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
@Brian. Lol. That’s actual a good question. With gray you don’t have to pay for colored prints. Genius.
November 26th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
gray is good, and better. Fits the stylish whiteness of the wii, and looks more classier
November 26th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
The red color is so much better…
November 26th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I get it, I do. It’s Nintendo trying to be more grown up looking.
But it’s a GAME company. Gray does not inpire the thought of family fun to me, truth be told.
November 26th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
They should have put a rainbow behind the logo.
November 26th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
lol, ejamer wins. but damn, keep that red around.
November 26th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I WILL NOT CONFORM! AHHHH!
November 26th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
I agree that gray is more subtle on all the white packaging they’re using now, not to mention it’s less intrusive and stands out less from the Wii and DS brands (not to mention it unifies it all now).
I don’t really mind as we’ve been seeing this for a while now but it is a tad sad to see the red go. At least the logo itself is intact.
November 26th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Grey is so awful. What is Nintendo thinking? They really do hate us. Whether it is something small or something big, they just piece by piece try to excommunicate us from their lives.

November 29th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Yeah! You tell them Fess!
I think you should do a 2 cents in 60 seconds bit on this story.
Maybe even start a petition to bring back the red?
Anyways I don’t mind the grey but I will miss the red.
November 29th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
@ Guch:
But in The Giver, the dude could see colors, man. No one knew what the f#@$ “color” was.
So…The gray goes with the new plain image Nintendo is using to advertise their consoles, but now Mario’s gonna look like Peach died in every game, with a f@#$ing gray hat and overalls. Retarded funeral getup and all…depressing the gamers…MAN.

maybe we should send de Blob to paint that thing up
