Nintendo Considered Two Other Zelda Titles for HD Remakes

What if I told you there could have been high-definition versions of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess? How about Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword? According to Eiji Aonuma, the series’ caretaker, his team tested these Zelda titles plus Wind Waker when deciding which to make HD.

In an interview with Polygon, Aonuma explained the thought process behind choosing Wind Waker in lieu of the other games:

When we were thinking about the new Zelda for Wii U, which is something we’re actually working on, we needed to experiment with a variety of graphic styles and it was part of that process we took some existing Zelda games and made them HD just to see what would happen,” he said. “In doing so we realized that the Wind Waker graphic style, the art style, really represented well on the Wii U given the graphic capabilities of the new system. It really brought that world to life.”

Unfortunately, Aonuma isn’t fond of remaking older titles. He believes his job as a creator is to create something new, refreshing. But we aren’t all like that. If you had to choose, which of the games would you have remade? I think Aonuma and his team made the right call in choosing Wind Waker. Wind Waker‘s art style shines on Wii U. Yet a Twilight Princess HD seems compelling too. Share your choice in the comments.
