What if I told you there could have been high-definition versions of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess? How about Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword? According to Eiji Aonuma, the series’ caretaker, his team tested these Zelda titles plus Wind Waker when deciding which to make HD.

In an interview with Polygon, Aonuma explained the thought process behind choosing Wind Waker in lieu of the other games:

When we were thinking about the new Zelda for Wii U, which is something we’re actually working on, we needed to experiment with a variety of graphic styles and it was part of that process we took some existing Zelda games and made them HD just to see what would happen,” he said. “In doing so we realized that the Wind Waker graphic style, the art style, really represented well on the Wii U given the graphic capabilities of the new system. It really brought that world to life.”

Unfortunately, Aonuma isn’t fond of remaking older titles. He believes his job as a creator is to create something new, refreshing. But we aren’t all like that. If you had to choose, which of the games would you have remade? I think Aonuma and his team made the right call in choosing Wind Waker. Wind Waker‘s art style shines on Wii U. Yet a Twilight Princess HD seems compelling too. Share your choice in the comments.

It has to be Majora’s Mask! It needs the recognition it deserves. Next, I would probably have to say Twilight Princess.

  2. MikeIsaPoet says:

Good thing they didn’t pick Skyward Sword…that would have been way too early for a remake.

  3. dienman says:

WindWaker have all the qualities for a remake. I an glad it fell on WindWaker.

  4. john Turner says:

Twilight Princess has always been my Favourite Zelda, so it would be Awesome, but a close second is Majora’s Mask.

But then I agree with Aonuma, I’m not convinced by Remakes, and would rather a New Titles in the Series Sooner rather than Later.

A twilight Princess HD woudl be truly awesom. But I really enjohed Wind Waker. Can’t wait for taht. Why is everyone so in love with Majora’s Mask? I really hated it. I will pass on Majora’s Mask. it is the weakest Zelda, It’s stupid. Zelda is about exploration, not rushing throug a game woryying about time management. it is a watered down Zelda experience. I Hated it, Hated it, I HATED IT.

  6. Rakim Reid says:

@Angel Lopez: It appears you like the darker Zelda titles. Good choices!

@MikeIsaPoet: I agree 100%. That probably was the reason why they didn’t choose it.

@Angel Lopez & John Turner: Majora’s Mask is my least favorite Zelda title though I see the appeal. After playing the revolutionary Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask felt too different too soon. Twilight Princess would have been a nice follow-up. Still, a HD Majora’s Mask is an instant purchase, if only to give it another chance.

@Tonm C: I understand fully why you hated Majora’s Mask. I did too when I played it. Time management didn’t sit well with me as a child during my brief time with the game.

Damn Nintendo! :-( They should’ve made a remake of Mother 3 into HD (translated into English) instead!
