New Nintendo franchise? Captain Rainbow (features Birdo!)

Thursday, July 10th, 2008 at 10:59am by Jack

This anime, currently Japan-only, mish mash of Nintendo characters and a protagonist named Captain Rainbow is apparently some brand-new first party Nintendo IP. Looks pretty sharp. Worthy of the West?

Looks like a mix of Viewtiful Joe and Chibi-Robo, not that I’m complaining or anything.

The more and more I watch the vid the more I want to play it haha, wouldnt be suprised if they changed the name to Captain Awesome or something like that for the West, not that it needs to be changed.

  2. David says...

Yeah, I caught the Chibi-Robo vibe, too. Just looked it up and it’s made by the same folks, Skip Ltd. Neat!

  3. DmNt says...

    what

    That. Is. Awesome.

But why am I fine with it going against my manliness? :p

  4. Roddy says...

    hehehe

    Man, Japan is so weird!

  5. Chooch says...

I think it looks pretty sweet. The game’s graphics look pretty sharp, with sort of a comic book feel. Seems like it would be pretty fun.

  6. Joltman says...

    Very interesting…
I’m curious as well to play it; not sure how well it would do over here.
That sure looks like a very weird design of Birdo, IMO.

  7. GrumpyDavid says...

Hmmm… Does anyone know if the rainbow is THE symbol for homosexuality in Japan like it is in the western world? From this video it sure looks like it is. Captain Rainbow…

  8. Derek says...

That looks awful. Japan, you can go ahead and keep that one. ;)

  9. Ben says...

Captain Rainbow, representing gay pride throughout Japan.

  10. Soup says...

Yeah, Japan is going to love it, with Sentai shows buried in deep in their culture roots. America, with its unironic love of attitude and masculinity, is probably not quite as ready for it.

  11. Richter says...

    Ace and Gary totally approve.

  12. peshue says...

Doesn’t look all to great to me. I doubt all the rainbows would fly to well with all the american gamers that are more concerned about how manly playing games makes them look than much else.

  13. droop4 says...

Doesnt anyone else sees something wrong with this game!?

    I mean… CAPTAIN RAINBOW?!?

    COME ON!

Besides, looks lame… you guys are just sucking up to NIntendo. If this was a 3rd party i bet anything you people would go “lame” “looks bad” etc…

It’s funny how some people react to a game no matter how gay it looks/sounds when it come from Nintendo. You people is what keeps 3rd parties from giving us truly awesome (AAA) games.

  14. samfish says...

Or, y’know, MAYBE we’re just comfortable enough with our sexuality to not be bothered by a game that has apparent gay connotations, droop.

Plus, it’s from Nintendo. There’s a reason people trust Nintendo when it comes to making fun games.

  15. cronotrigger913 says...

Yeah, this doesn’t look appetizing at all.

And is it just me, or does Birdo look like he’s from an N64 game?

  16. DonWii says...

Skip is 2nd party, not 1st party.

    Also, what Samfish said.
That problem is the reason Tingle RPG for the DS never made it to NA.

  17. Reynard says...

    Utter crap.

This honestly looks like a bad 3D game from the N64 and PSX era with graphics, animation and gameplay to match.

I’ll stick to Viewtiful Joe for my eccentric superhero fix thank you very much.

  18. SALTYB0B says...

that scared me in too many different ways…

  19. ResidentialEvil says...

What about this game “looks sharp”? There wasn’t much shown about the gameplay to really be able to tell much. And there’s no way you can call those visuals “sharp”…..those visual look maybe first gen GameCube at best. That’s pretty pathetic.

My dismay for this game has nothing to do with the homosexual overtones, or whatever. It has everything to do, rather, with the fact that it looks absolutely, unequivocally forgettable in every regard.

I may be American, but I’m not an intolerant buffoon.

….said the latest knee-jerk reactionary idiot who has yet to play this game and is deciding that it is a complete failure rather than waiting for the actual product to be released (in his own language, mind you) to judge it.

Really, Derek? Your dismay for his game comes from it being forgettable?
Wow. You must really be dismayed by 75% of all video games that have ever been made.

Hey Derek, what did you think of the Atari 2600 port of Moon Patrol?

“IT WAS FORGETTABLE. I AM DISMAYED.”

Hey Derek, what did you think of Ducktales 2 for the NES?

“IT WAS FORGETTABLE. I AM DISMAYED!”

Hey Derek, what did you think of Space Station: Silicon Valley for the N64?

“IT WAS FORGETTABLE. IIIIII AAAAAMMM DISMAAAAYYYYED!!!!!”

You may not be intolerant of homosexuals, but you are extremely intolerant of video games that aren’t so bursting with immediate, gratuitous fun that simply viewing short gameplay scenes would make you want to play the game. Meaning you would probably NEVER have given The Legend of Zelda a chance—had you seen the commercial that was mostly focused on some freak screaming about Octoroks and showed little in the way of fun, unforgettable gameplay.

But who am I to question your judgment, Derek? Clearly you’ve already traveled to the future and played this game.

  23. Scott says...

    @ Matt
jesus christ, calm down buddy. theyre just stateing their opinion about a VIDEO GAME. did you work on it or something?

  24. Luigi Kid says...

    @Matt
    What Scott said!

Viewtiful Joe is possibly one of THE best games of all time!!!(and #2)
The DS one wasn’t so great though.Chibi-Robo is awesome as well.
The video made firefox crash, but what I did see of the video gave me the impression that the game is-please don’t kill me Matt-stupid and ridiculous.
