Mega Man 9 DLC deluge continues this week

Monday, October 20th, 2008 at 9:26am by Jack

Capcom rang the Infendo HQ phone this morning with details about the launch of its Mega Man 9 DLC (wave number two). Harder difficulties (it gets harder?!) and a new boss stage top this list.

Hard Mode – Dubbed Hero Mode in Japan, this mode enables you to play the entire game on an increased difficulty level with alternate enemy distribution and spawning points. Hard Mode is not compatible with Rankings or Challenges Modes.

Expert Mode – Dubbed Super Hero Mode Japan, this mode represents the apex of Mega Man 9 difficulty settings and is not for the novice Mega Man 9 player. This mode triples the level of difficulty from the default Mega Man 9 game. Expert Mode is not compatible with Rankings or Challenges Modes.

Special Time Attack Stage – This DLC gives you an additional stage for Time Attack Mode, complete with an all new level and Robot Master Boss, “Fake Man.” Similar in difficulty to the Willy Stages, players will have a fun time tackling this time sensitive competitive stage. Special Time Attack Stage is not compatible with Challenge Mode.

Love it or hate it, DLC is here to stay. These additions are a few dollars. Worth it? Not worth it? You decide in that classy Infendo comment fashion we’ve come to expect from you guys and gals.

Well, the little timer on my game save says I’ve played 1:53. Every time I play I save, no matter how many times I die. I haven’t bought anything out of the store so I’m playing without any power ups or extra lives. I beat Concrete man first and hadn’t beaten anyone else until I played through Galaxy Man’s stage last night. It really is a lot easier than the others.

But to hear that it can be even more difficult…I think I’ll save my money for something else.

I think it’s kind of annoying when they remove something for the game so that we have to pay to get it back.

Don’t think I will be getting any of this. I don’t play with the time attack mode and I find the game hard enough as it is (maybe I will get the ‘Hard’ mode if I ever beat the game without dying once, or without using E Tanks– but I doubt that will ever happen).

I’ve only played the demo from PSN and i can’t even do that one level (the one with giant elephants). I like retro games but this is just too much for me. I feel so wussy saying that lol but it’s true…

I’ll get the Special Time Attack Stage since it’s only 100 Wii points and a full new stage (and boss).

As for the extra difficulties, I’ve seen screens from the changes and it seems that some levels and enemies are changed over from the regular game. There’s a screen in particular of the vertical tunnel in Wily’s stages that is completely different. Wait and see on the extra difficulties.Looking forward to Waves 3 and 4 of DLC (Capcom said they planed a years worth of DLC).

I don’t mind the DLC, especially because this game makes a case for not paying for extras you may not have wanted (”it gets harder?!” proves this point).

What I’m kind of bummed out about is these not being placed into the ranking system because that only adds to the fun and addictiveness of getting to a high score and trying to beat others’.

I got the extra stage last night, and it’s worth the $1. My wife thought it was cheap that they reused all of the minibosses in it, instead of having some original enemies – but I was okay with it.

I’m low on points right now, but I’ll probably get the tougher difficulties eventually. The standard stages seem pretty easy after a while, so I’m looking for something to add some replay value.

Here’s my take – I like that the game was released at $10 with $8 worth of DLC available… rather than including everything and selling the game for $15-18. The core game is an amazing deal at $10, so I can’t imagine expecting more to be included for free. Don’t forget that we bought these games in the eighties for $50 and that just as much work went into developing this one.
